I've played around with SimpleX and its not quite there yet for non technical people. Start9 have just added a self hosted SimpleX option to their marketplace which I need to test, maybe I can uncle Jim my family. I've used Matrix quite a lot but a Tor only instance which is very limiting. Keet is OK as another alternative.
