I have said it elsewhere, but 18 is a little low for the US - preventing children from being prostituted out by their parents is essential, and we do not currently live in a society where parents can simply be trusted to not act in such a fashion. "A few months after the acquisition of a high school diploma" is better, and so setting a date of consent at "the 30th of August after the 18th birthday" is better, as that is when a teenager can be expected to be out from under the thumb of their parents. This logic obviously does not apply to better societies, it is just the case for the shithole that is the US.
