Have only seen it used in a couple schemes which both start with step of combining two pubkeys and then doing some stuff. It's funny to refer to anyone as a star on nostr, but i get what you mean. A few of the star devs do seem to know what they're doing wrt cryptography, but I'm not deep in the mix enough to be sure.
