Bitcoin's source code is the most replicated and well understood out of all cryptocurrencies. At least most of us can get a gist on how evil devs tamper with Satoshi's vision. If Monero were attacked via this vector, it'll probably go unoticed. Being able to review of cryptographic code is a rare skill. The higher the cryptographic standard, the rarer the experienced devs.
