I've been studying this space for months now and after looking at a lot of different options, MLS (messaging layer security) stood out as the right way to approach solving DMs and group messages. It's highly scalable, an internet standard, and allows for graceful upgrading over time. Done right – this NIP allows us to build extremely secure, uncensorable messaging clients that have no centralized coordinators or servers.
