Even Cross Country at my kid's school had a coach cracking down in ways that had me shocked. I get it for like, actual team sports, especially for competitive teams, but cross country was always the biggest sport by participation growing up, in part because you determine your own level of competition. I ran with particularly competitive folks who got scholarships, but by the same token, I also ran with stoners who'd pull 30 minute 5k's just to be active and have an extracurricular to show. Because they required next to zero resources from coaches or captains to have along for the run anyway.\n\nCompetition's all well and good, but there's such a thing as going too extreme with what is at the end of the day a leisurely pastime. I suppose some people think sports are something more than that though.\n\nAnything to distract from the realities of the world I suppose."}
