Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as mayor of New York City early on Thursday, just after the New Year’s Eve ball dropped in Times Square.

He was sworn in by Letitia James, the state attorney general, as he rested his left hand upon a Quran held by his wife, Rama Duwaji. The private ceremony — held underground in front of family, friends and reporters at an abandoned subway station near City Hall — caps Mamdani’s yearlong rise from obscure state lawmaker to the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor.
