i just think it's really silly how anarcho-lefists act like they are separate from the democratic party but then mostly go out and vote anyway, are completely invested in the outcome of elections, and so implicitly cosign to the strategy of pushing the dems left whether they realize it or not, they are incapable of separating themselves from liberals in any meaningful way

it's really the worst of both worlds because they neither contruct an alternative political ecosystem altogether, nor do they enter the democratic party on the local level and try to oust the DNC leadership and run socialist candidates, so political action amounts to sporadic entryism into popular movements that are mostly led by progressives/liberals that are easily coopted and called off. Meanwhile it's the most milquetoast reformist elements that end up actually doing anything, and naturally, because they like principles and systemic critique, go the route of compromise and opportunism.

I also fuck with Kwame Ture and his thing is that voter registration is a means of mobilizing people and community engagement, the voter registration drives he did in the deep south laid the foundations of the Black Panther party there, the act of voting or the outcome of the election is not the ultimate end, it's something you can do to engage with the community and build organizational capability

it's pretty clear most white US anarchists/leftists do not have this frame of reference, they haven't studied the civil rights movement, they don't situate their politics in these historic liberation struggles, despite the fact white leftists were heavily involved with these movements in their day, because their politics are largely ahistorical and abstract, and defined solely by a reaction against contemporary DNC liberalism -- so it does not occur to them how weird it is to tell people not to vote, especially for people in the US South, where there's a long history of activists being brutally murdered for registering black people to vote, where mass voter disenfranchisement is still a big thing, where the entire republican regime is almost whole dependent on gerrymandering and systematic voter disenfranchisement.

To be fair there's lots of black folks who consciously choose to not vote, for reasons as well thought out as anyone else. But it's telling how rare this historic reality is even addressed. The issue isn't voting as such, it's whether the masses are organized, when they are, then they are able to pressure political parties to support policies they want, or even influence which candidates are nominated, this is why the New Deal happened, it's not just that people voted for FDR, rather FDR was elected and was able to pass social democratic reforms becuase the masses were organized and demanded it and the ruling class was forced to grant these concessions.

So the thing is to get the people organized and they'll decide whether they'll vote or who they vote for, either voting in isolation, finger wagging people about why they should vote, or quixotically telling people who mostly don't vote anyway, why they shouldn't vote under any circumstance doesn't do anything

But that's not 'privilege' tho, if privilege is some tangible benefit that a hierarchical system provides to some but not others, privilege is like cops showing preferential treatment to white people, employers making things easier fro able bodied people, those are privileges.

When you boycott something you are not receiving a benefit, you are denying oneself access to a service to hurt the provider in pursuit of a goal, you an as individual don't get something out of a boycott that is being denied to someone who is unable to participate.

Like the famous Montgomery bus boycott, they didn't just tell people not to ride the bus and finger wag people who relied on the bus system for work, they organized carpools / rideshares and other services as a temporary alternative to the bus system. That's what a real boycott looks like, these days boycotts are framed as acts of ethical consumerism, totally individual and moralistic. That's the problem, boycotts should be collective strategic endeavors that take into account everyone's needs.

yeah the concept of "semite" as a racial category is absolutely rooted in 19th century race science, of course, there are Semitic languages of which Hebrew, Arabic, as well as Coptic and many African languages share common lineage, but the idea of a semitic "race" is bullshit.

It is complicated as Jews broadly trace their ancestry back to ancient Hebrews, this is partly mythologized, but even accounting for occurrences of mass conversion, the social norms that encourage Jews to marry other Jews mean such a shared common ancestry is at least plausible for many/most, and this is why many European based Jews have traits more commonly found in the middle east than Europe, but on a long enough timeline basically everyone is related, and there is no such thing as a "jewish/semitic race" nor is ancestry the sole or primary factor in Jewish identity, rather than faith or cultural affiliation.

So Anti-Jewish or Jew-Hatred is probably a more accurate terms and less nebulous. But I do think there is a broader anti-semitism that includes both hatred for Jews and Arabs and all MENA peoples that goes back a very long time. The racist stereotypes pertaining to Jews and Arabs are quite similar, for example. So i find many Zionist critiques of the term to be problematic, since they would like to reject any shared heritage with Arabs or deny that islamophobia and anti-jewish hatred are historically related -- since that would implicate themselves in their anti-arab genocide.

If we want to really go back to the roots of anti-semitism broadly speaking all roads lead to Rome, and their colonial project in the middle east and north africa was anti-semitic in the broad sense, Carthagians referred to themselves as Canaani, i.e. from Canaan, and the cultural similarities between Carthagians and Jews was not lost on the Romans. So there's obviously a connection between the Roman genocide and occupation of Carthage(modern Lybia) and that of Judea / Palestine -- to be clear the Romans didn't have our modern conception of Race, and their proto anti-semitism is very different from what we have today, but it does has a direct influence on everything that came after it.

This structural anti-semitism of Rome was inherited by Christian Europe ( jew-hatred is baked into christian theology itself ) and prefigured many historical events, like the Crusades, or the Inquisition ( the Spanish inquisition in particularly was both Anti-Muslim and Anti-Jewish )

in everyday practice piracy isn't meant to be a political act, it's a way to get things for free, someone stealing food doesn't need to have some political justification to do so, but it's still a political act.

What is I think *revolutionary* about piracy, even if most pirates don't realize, isn't that it hurts corporate revenue ( which arguably it doesn't for the most part ) it's that by torrenting or using/sharing pirate websites you're in effect building distributed network infrastructure that is resilent to corporate censorship and provides needed information for free.

Xmpp is not an 'alternative' to Signal, xmpp is a protocal on which a variety of apps can be built on top of, text, voice and audio chat (conversations) video conferencing ( jitsi) or social media (movim) xmpp can also use a variety of encryption methods currently omemo is the standard, but other better standards could be used ( and omemo is pretty solid already )

Signal, which requires a phone number, is centralized under a shady organization and only works on smartphones(which are all backdoored anyway) is pretty limited and has some unavoidable privacy compromises that can be easily avoided with xmpp.

Not saying don't use signal but the idea it is some bulletproof gold standard and that Xmpp is 'insecure' is just false
