Although the end result is the same ("infinite amount of time to an infinite number of fragments"), it's not clear to me what the timescale of such a runaway is. A cascade that runs away over a thousand years has a different feel—and is probably more difficult to devote resources to *attempt* to mitigate—than a cascade that runs away over six months.

Entirely tangentially, I was surprised a couple years ago when I finally watched Mars Attacks! and discovered that the scientist who provides terrible guidance to the US President is named Donald Kessler, played by Pierce Brosnan. I wasn't able to determine if the real Donald Kessler had any public reaction to this.

After a warm day yesterday, I checked this morning and the Kepler Track was open, so I went for it and ran the loop today today. It’s about a forty mile loop through Fiordlands National Park in NZ.

Wow, that was among the hardest days I’ve had in the mountains. The first leg is nice with some uphill at the end, then the second leg covers the next ten miles as it winds through alpine slopes and along narrow ridges—except there was about a foot of slush and water and freezing rain with winds strong enough to blow me over sideways a couple times. Someone else with a backpack that, frankly, looked better suited for holding a biology textbook, lost their sleeping bag when it blew away in the wind. Beautiful scenery up there, but no photos since my hands were too wet and cold to operate the touch screen, apart from just not wanting to stop long enough to mess with it. Then about twenty miles through the forest back to the trailhead and five more miles back through town. About 7:35 wall clock time if you exclude to/from the trailhead. Given the conditions, I’m alright with that. Not gonna beat the kids and get a FKT, but 🤷‍♂️

Yay, ran the first section of the Kepler Track out and back and got in a (mostly) trail marathon since the middle section was closed for avalanche conditions.
