A warning for Adobe #InDesign users. I recently updated my copy, and after preparing a document, the recipient of that document sent me the alt text that popped up on one of their figures. Apparently, by default, InDesign uses AI to generate (often hilariously wrong) alt text for images.

Dear #history folks: I'm a professional mapmaker (https://somethingaboutmaps.com) and I make a lot of maps for academic press books.

Would you be interested in attending an online talk where I discuss:
• what cartographers are
• why your work might benefit from maps
• how to find a mapmaker
• what it's like to work with one
• how much it might cost
?

If there's enough interest, I might put something together this winter, so please boost this! If it happens, I'll announce it here and on my blog.

Useless Projection #6: The Asymmetric Monstrosity. A combination of the sinusoidal, Mollweide, Equal Earth, and cylindrical equal-area projections. It's all equal-area*, so it's suitable for the classroom.

(I now have a goal for this year: make an elaborate wall map in this projection).

*I actually probably got the scaling wrong on the cylindrical equal-area part, but I'll work on that for the next draft, when I make the "real" map

Last night I wondered: All human writing systems are linear, as far as I know. A string of characters that extends as you make the idea more complex. Are there area-based human writing systems? The way a QR code is a 2D analogue to a 1D bar code.
