OK, Albert Entwistle, get the heck outta here; you were rottenly written, dreadfully dialogued, and utterly unbelievable.

Now it's all up to Vita Sackville-West to put things right, with her 1931 novel, All Passion Spent.

Sackville-West was a hugely popular writer in her day, but is rarely read or even discussed in the present (outside of her much-mulled-over love affairs with Violet Trefusis and Virginia Woolf).

#reading #books #bookstodon

OK, The PowerBook is the last of my unread Jeanette Winterson novels, so I'm going to read it & then I shall have the perfect excuse to buy MORE! Muah ha ha!

This one sounds right up my alley:
"An e-writer called Ali or Alix will write to order anything you like, provided that you are prepared to enter the story as yourself and take the risk of leaving it as someone else. I'm a day late in remembering the writer William Burroughs, b1914, d1997 on 2nd August at 83.

I discovered his work (by way of Queer) in 1987 when I was 17 years old. Burroughs somehow connected with me where other writers failed to. He had an extraordinary wild and dark humour, and a sharp vision of the world and its overwhelming BS.

I haven't read him in a couple of years and need to rectify that.

#reading #books #bookstodon bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Back to Jeanette Winterson I go. This time it's Written on the Body (1992). About to begin a most fascinating book: Unthinkable: An Extraordinary Journey Through the World's Strangest Brains by Helen Thompson. A non-fiction work about how wacky our grey matter can be.

The back of the book says:
"Imagine... Interesting article from The Guardian on where to start with Virginia Woolf, prompted by the 100th anniversary of the publication of Mrs Dalloway. #CurrentlyReading

I'm halfway through The Collected Short Stories of Virginia Woolf, and not convinced that this format suits Woolf's writing style. She enjoys wild tangents of fancy that are wonderful in a long form novel, but here suffer from not being able to breathe, and the stories end too abruptly. Nevertheless, so far there are a couple of gems.

What do others here think of her short stories? I'd be curious to know!

What are you all reading this weekend?

#bookstodon bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Have been whizzing through books this past week! Now about to dive into The Collected Short Stories of Virginia Woolf. If the stories are anywhere near as good as the font is massive (and it's startlingly massive), I'm in for a treat. 😅

#reading #books #bookstodon bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)
