well you can get an analog capture card for about $100 that connects over USB for fixed data/audio bitrates, or around $300 for a PCI card with uncompressed capture, though of course then you need a Mac that supports PCI slots :akko_derp:

And for miniDV, that obviously involves a conversion stage from digital to analog to digital, instead of the native format right off the tape, so that’s a bummer. I’m keeping a legacy Mac for that!

here’s the processed audio, maybe there would be more interesting samples to use, but I tried a few and they all basically sounded like this. Note the little noise bursts at the beginning and end, which is the 8-bit dithering noise being expanded into full-spectrum noise.

hey because I can’t leave well enough alone, I got this working on my Mac, and the results are interesting technically, but since 8-bit files are noisier, it kind of just sounds like adding noise to the original recording.

Here’s some screenshots of spectrograms of me singing two notes in an “ahhh”, the original and the file after downsampling to 11.025kHz/8-bit, then run through the processor to bring it back to 48kHz/16-bit.

I forget the term for it, but there’s a hobby for geolocating places based on a single photo, which is really cool to see in action! There’s a couple other key elements here that give away the location: the yellow Adirondack chair in the center background; the maple, sumac, and willow trees, and the style and color of those glass bottles are all strongly correlated with North America, and particularly the upper northeast/New England area. I would love to visit Sweden though to compare ☺️
