In May 2019 a prominent Bitcoin Core developer called Matt Corallo posted a Twitter thread calling for DEI recruitment into Bitcoin development.

The same month, John Newbery hired a new co-organiser for Chaincode Labs' developer residency.

The man Newbery hired was Adam Jonas.

Jonas was not a protocol developer. He was a pro baseball player developer and scout before studying at the Flatiron School and then becoming their Director of Engineering.

He didn't just work at Flatiron. He was one of the first people the school trained, in its founding year, 2012.

Flatiron School is a New York coding bootcamp that makes DEI the explicit organising principle of its public identity.

Race- and gender-gated fellowships. A BLM-era DEI Taskforce. Cohort bonding sessions called "Feelings Friday."

A named core value: "Nurture Difference."

Newbery explained the Jonas hire in a Max Hillebrand Interview at Breaking Bitcoin Amsterdam in 2019: "Jonas's background is in education. He was working in the Flatine School and managing teams and projects there. So he has a lot of experience putting together these programs."

The qualification mentioned was programme architecture, from the Flatiron School.

"Feelings Friday" appeared at Chaincode's June 2019 residency. Sessions where cohort members process their emotions together.

Carla Kirk-Cohen, a 2019 resident, documented it on the What Bitcoin Did podcast 134 in August 2019: "We have Feelings Friday, at 4:30 on a Friday. We all grab a beer and unload our week's emotions."

Flatiron formalised the same named practice a year later.

Jonas carried it in.

Kirk-Cohen went on to be publicly named by Jonas as "our poster child" of the recruitment pipeline in an Adopting Bitcoin talk in December 2021. She subsequently joined the board of Brink, designated as an independent director.

On the Stephan Livera Podcast ep. 216 in October 2020 and The Anita Posch Podcast same month, Gloria recounts how Jonas cold-emailed her in January 2020 and urged here to apply again for a residency at Chaincode Labs.

She had applied to Chaincode the year before and been rejected. She had since lined up offers from Google and Facebook. She was about to remove all mention of blockchain from her resumé.

Jonas had been tracking her for over a year.

Jonas offered to set up a coffee chat at the Stanford Blockchain Conference with "some Chaincode Bitcoiners."

She said yes, and described how she expected to meet "nutty Bitcoin maximalists."

Instead she met John Newbery and Amiti Uttarwar.

Zhao sat with them for three hours.

Newbery told her, in what she recalled as his "very soft, British voice," that Bitcoin Core was "the most interesting project in the world."

Uttarwar told her to just clone the repository and try it.

She was accepted to Chaincode's residency that year, after meeting Amiti and John at the dinner. The year after being rejected.

Here's the thing... Uttarwar had followed the exact same path:

Rejected in 2018. Met Newbery at an Optech dinner in 2019. Accepted that same year.

While Jonas was running the pipeline, he was also designing the institution (Brink) that would fund its output permanently.

Brink would become the single largest funder of Bitcoin Core developers. Over $17 million in documented donations.

The blueprint for it was written by the man running the residency, on his personal website, six weeks before it existed.

On October 16, 2020, Jonas published "Funding Bitcoin Development" on his personal site, arguing for a trusted nonprofit intermediary to fund Core developers.

Two days later he posted another blog post: "Starting a Bitcoin 501(c)(3)." A detailed operational blueprint. IRS process, approval timelines, legal gotchas.

Thirty-six days later, Brink launched.

It was presented as John Newbery's organisation. Jonas's name appeared nowhere in the public materials.

On launch day, Newbery told Jonas publicly: "Thank you for all of your help with Brink. Your initial research was what got the whole thing started."

That exchange is the only on-record acknowledgment that Jonas conceived it. It has never been addressed in any Brink public materials.

Six weeks after launch, Brink announced its first fellowship recipient.

Gloria Zhao.

The vote was cast by a three-person board: Newbery, Schmidt, and Harding.

The man who recruited her, mentored her, arranged her prior funding, and conceived the organisation was the man who cast one of the three votes.

No formal conflict-of-interest process is documented.

On the Anita Posch podcast, Zhao named, unprompted, the three people who brought her in:

"Amiti and Adam Jonas and John Newbery got me into Bitcoin Core."

Jonas's institutional influence and reach didn't stop at the recruiting pipeline and the funding.

In May 2024, Bitcoin Core's moderation guidelines were introduced at the weekly IRC meeting. The maintainer presenting them said: "ajonas wrote some moderation guidelines."

ajonas is Adam Jonas. Those same guidelines were used to mute Luke Dashjr on the OP_RETURN pull request and ban Antoine Riard from the Bitcoin Core repository entirely.

In July 2022 Gloria Zhao became a Bitcoin Core maintainer.

Only two and a half years had passed since her three hour coffee chat at Stanford with John Newbery and Amiti Uttarwar.

Typical time to reach maintainership is five to ten years.

On June 9, 2025, Gloria Zhao merged PR #32406, removing Bitcoin Core's OP_RETURN limit.

It was the most contested merge in recent Core history.

I appreciate the opportunity for your time. I've only got a few minutes here, so I've written some things down so you don't have to listen to me ramble.

But there is an evil I have seen under the sun—the sort of error that arises from a ruler: fools are put in many high positions while the rich occupy low ones. I have seen slaves on horseback while princes go on foot like slaves.

Since August of 2023, I have received a flood of messages: social media, email, handwritten letters. I've had—I don't know how many—conversations with people face-to-face, probably thousands at this point. And I realize now that we don't have any clue as to how many around us are really broken; how many are silently suffering and barely hanging on.

More often than not, they start the message with, "Hey, I’m a nobody," but followed by horrors of addiction, mental illness, financial and household struggles—oftentimes incredibly complicated stories that I suspect they may have never told anyone before. But they still have hopes of a hopeful future, and they don't want to give up no matter what.

And it kills me because these people—they aren't "nobodies" as they describe themselves. Our modern society's convenient, comfortable, fragile little existence is oftentimes carried on the backs of these self-declared nobodies. And forgive my generalization, but in the modern world, we are so busy idolizing the genuine nothings of society: the self-centered celebrities, spineless politicians, clickbait social media influencers. It seems, from my perspective, that oftentimes these people live comfortable little lives while many of our real heroes are dragged through the mud and never once given a genuine thank you for it.

But it's not just them that are hurting; we all are. I mean, that's why you're here at this conference, right? That's why people have traveled from all over the world to gather here. You all realize that it's time to do something.

So, to set the record straight, I'm not here as an intellectual, or a psychologist, or a politician, or even a respected member of society, all things considered. I'm a high school dropout who lives in a log cabin in the woods in Virginia. I myself am just a 32-year-old nobody, so I'm just here as the messenger.

I believe that many of the problems identified at this conference are quite possibly symptoms of a bigger problem. We currently exist in an age of rapid digital immersion. The current average American teenager will have spent something like 30,000 hours by the time they are 30 on social media. The average American spends six to nine hours a day staring at devices. And whether it's a city sidewalk, a family dinner table, the receptionist at an office, even people driving their damn cars down the roadway, I constantly see the struggle between maintaining conscious attention in the real world and the overwhelming pull we feel towards the digital one.

And in my unprofessional opinion, neuroplasticity has made us increasingly digitally proficient, but at a cost of being digitally dependent. If being hired on as a London cab driver can change your brain on an MRI scan, and if life experiences like PTSD can alter the DNA and sperm, what irreversible alterations will 30,000 hours of staring into algorithmically-fed states of hypnosis do to the human mind or to their offspring?

In this short breath of time, we live in a state of existence that quite possibly no one else in world history has. We have both access to instant global connectivity, infinite information, and consumer-level access to artificial intelligence—but we are the last few humans in world history who remember what life was like before it. We are the last living people in history to have experienced life before the digital age, and I fear that it may become nearly impossible for younger generations to even differentiate the digital world from the real one before the end of my lifetime.

There is nothing inherently wrong with technology. There is nothing wrong with instant connection, and there is nothing intrinsically bad about access to abundant information. But what is bad is the lack of control and agency we have over these systems. Without realizing it, we are being programmed and our culture is becoming commodified. Therefore, the more time we spend on these digital information systems, the more we revert to the mean of one of a fixed set of broad internet cohorts. In other words: the more time we spend online, the more commoditized our culture, the more tribal our psychology, and the more vulnerable we become.

When the floods first came to Western North Carolina last year where I used to live, there were tens of thousands of people who showed up to help from all over the country. No one asked them, no one paid them, and most of the world has no idea they were ever even there. I was there the same day that the Governor of North Carolina came for his little photo op. He made a public announcement that day with the current statewide death toll of the floods, but that same morning alone, volunteer veterans with cadaver dogs that I had met with had pulled 15 bodies out of a single pile of debris near the KOA campground in Swannanoa.

The statewide count at that point had to have been well into the hundreds; I believe the number the Governor used that day was 28. In fact, there was a reefer truck that sat for two days full of bodies because the morgues were overflowing. And while FEMA was hoarding donated generators and denying people on their applications, it was the "nobodies" of the world that were driving UTVs and Jeeps with chainsaws up mountain roads rescuing people.

There were two guys we met that hot-wired a bulldozer from a quarry to cut a navigable path through a washed-out road in two days—a road that the state said would take months—allowing supplies to people who hadn't had contact with anyone in over a week. Volunteers were working 16 hours a day taking supplies on everything from horses to helicopters. It was humanity there in front of my very eyes.

And it was in those seven days in North Carolina that changed everything for me. It was people saving people. Even with a lack of leadership, failed protocols, and overwhelming inefficiency from the state, the nobodies took up the slack.

And so, I'm just here to remind you that we don't need our false idols. We should no longer rely on politicians who bow down to money to manage our city or our states. We need to find the real leaders everywhere and empower them. Western North Carolina was proof to me that there is an army of good people left in this world who want to do good things; we just have to give them places to gather and give them the ability to act.

And so I close with this: Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.

And so, I'll see you on April the 5th in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, for the first official gathering. It is now my life's mission to revive rural America one town at a time. It’s called the Rural Revival Project.

This NIP defines an optional relay extension for sequence-based event synchronization.

Abstract

Standard Nostr sync uses timestamp-based filters (since), which can miss events due to timestamp collisions or clock drift. This NIP defines a changes feed that uses monotonically increasing sequence numbers for precise, reliable synchronization.

Motivation

Timestamp-based sync has limitations:

Collisions: Multiple events can share the same second-precision timestamp

Clock drift: Client and relay clocks may differ

Imprecise checkpointing: "Give me events since timestamp X" is fuzzy

Sequence numbers solve these issues by providing a strict total ordering of all events stored by a relay.

Relay Requirements

Relays implementing this NIP:

MUST:

Assign a monotonically increasing sequence number to each stored event

Support the CHANGES message type

Support continuous/live changes feeds

Capability Advertisement

Relays MUST advertise support by including this NIP in their NIP-11 supported_nips array.

Clients SHOULD check this before using the changes feed and fall back to timestamp-based sync if not supported.

Between Hype and Reality
The episode "Cryptocurrencies" sheds light on a world full of promises and visions, but also losses. Katjana "loses" the password to her wallet and flies to the USA to visit one of the world's most famous hardware hackers. Can Joe Grand recover her crypto funds? When a coordinator issues these credentials, they're cryptographically blind to the amounts and cannot link them back to specific users.

Kompaktor extends this concept beyond mixing into the realm of payments. The core insight: if credentials can represent value anonymously within a coinjoin round, why not use them to make actual payments? A sender can transfer credentials to a merchant, who then claims fresh outputs—all within the same coordinated round, with neither party revealing their coins to the other.

How Rounds Turn Chaos Into Efficiency

The magic happens through coordinated rounds—time-bounded periods where multiple participants simultaneously register inputs, receive credentials, and claim outputs. Here's the simplified flow:

A merchant creates an invoice (say, 0.1 BTC) and generates a unique key, sharing this via a payment URI that includes a Nostr relay address for encrypted communication. The customer generates their own key and signals intent to pay through that specific Nostr relay. When the customer joins an active coinjoin round, they register their inputs (Bitcoin they already own) and receive credentials from the coordinator equal to their deposit minus fees.

The customer then "reissues" these credentials—splitting them into the exact payment amount needed—and transfers a 0.1 BTC credential to the merchant via encrypted Nostr message. The merchant reissues this received credential under their own control and registers a fresh Bitcoin address to receive the output. Neither party sees the other's coins. The coordinator, despite facilitating the entire process, cannot link any input to any output. Finally, all participants sign, and the transaction broadcasts.

Crucially, dozens of similar payment flows can occur within the same round. The coordinator batches all of them into one efficient transaction, with multiple senders' payments potentially consolidated into single outputs where recipients share common characteristics.

Efficiency Gains That Change the Economics

The proof of concept targets compacting 50+ payments from different senders into a single Bitcoin output. To understand why this matters, consider how exchanges currently process withdrawals.

Most exchanges use one of three approaches:

Single transaction mode: Each withdrawal gets its own Bitcoin transaction. A transaction requires roughly 148 bytes per input plus 34 bytes per output plus overhead. If you're processing 1,000 withdrawals, that's 1,000 transactions competing for block space.

Withdrawal batching: Multiple withdrawals share a single transaction with one input and many outputs. Major exchanges have reported achieving 75% or greater fee reductions using this approach, cutting daily transaction counts dramatically.

Full batching (Kompaktor-style): Incoming deposits directly fund outgoing withdrawals in the same transaction. Deposits become inputs; withdrawals become outputs. The overhead is shared across all participants.

But Kompaktor goes further through output compaction. Rather than each payment requiring its own output, multiple payments flowing to coordinated recipients can share outputs within the coinjoin structure. If 50 payments compress into fewer outputs, the per-payment cost drops dramatically. The additional privacy comes essentially free since the coinjoin structure already obscures the payment graph.

Privacy Without Custodians or Complexity

Kompaktor delivers a trustless, private equivalent to ecash systems—without the custodians. This framing is important for understanding its value proposition.

Custodial ecash mints (like Fedimint or Cashu) offer excellent privacy because the mint issues blind tokens that users redeem anonymously. But you must trust the mint not to disappear with your funds. Lightning achieves non-custodial payments but involves channel management, liquidity constraints, and imperfect privacy.

Kompaktor threads the needle differently:

Sender privacy: The sender doesn't reveal which coins they own to the receiver. The credential transfer happens through encrypted Nostr messages, separate from the on-chain footprint.

Receiver privacy: The receiver doesn't reveal where they're receiving funds. They register outputs under a fresh Tor identity unlinked to any input registration.

Coordinator blindness: The coordinator cannot link inputs to outputs due to the credential system's unlinkability property. Even a malicious coordinator learns almost nothing about who paid whom.

Non-custodial: At no point does anyone else control your Bitcoin. Users sign only after verifying their expected outputs are included.

The tradeoff is timing: payments must complete within a coinjoin round (typically minutes to an hour), unlike ecash tokens which can be held indefinitely.

Use Cases Beyond Individual Payments

Kompaktor's architecture serves several constituencies particularly well:

Exchanges and payment processors represent the clearest use case. These entities process thousands of deposits and withdrawals daily. Full batching with output compaction could reduce their on-chain footprint by an order of magnitude while simultaneously enhancing user privacy.

Wallet providers could offer users automatic participation in payment rounds, similar to how Wasabi Wallet handles coinjoins in the background. The user experience would be: send Bitcoin, get privacy, pay lower effective fees—without understanding the underlying mechanics.

Merchant solutions benefit from the PayJoin-like properties without needing web servers. @BtcpayServer already incorporates related concepts through its WabiSabi plugin, which enables scheduled transactions that embed payments directly inside the next coinjoin round.

Lightning Network operators could use Kompaktor for managing channels—whether service provider operations or user-initiated flows like opens and closes. Kompaktor achieves both fee savings and strong privacy for these on-chain interactions.

Kompaktor, Ark, and Arkade

Kompaktor exists as an open-source proof of concept demonstrating what's achievable on Bitcoin today. It requires no protocol changes, no soft forks—just clever coordination using existing primitives.

Ark represents a related but distinct approach. Where Kompaktor batches payments into efficient on-chain transactions, Ark batches them into single on-chain commitments while moving most activity off-chain entirely. Ark's Virtual UTXOs (VTXOs) function similarly to Kompaktor's credentials—representing claimable value without on-chain footprint—but they persist between rounds and support instant off-chain transfers. Ark pushes these concepts even further, enabling asynchronous execution and more aggressive scaling.

Arkade is my focus at Ark Labs—a superset of Ark's capabilities that extends the protocol with additional features and optimizations. Arkade will use blinded credentials for its batches and commitment transactions, inheriting the same privacy properties as WabiSabi. I believe Arkade is the obvious next step, superior to Kompaktor in almost every way: asynchronous execution, persistent virtual UTXOs, instant off-chain transfers, more aggressive scaling—and the same coordinator-blind privacy guarantees. Think of the relationship as: Kompaktor proves what's possible with WabiSabi credentials for payments; Ark defines a full Layer 2 architecture; Arkade delivers a production implementation that combines Ark's scaling with WabiSabi's privacy.

PayJoin breaks analysis heuristics by having both sender and receiver contribute inputs. The problem: it doesn't give users direct privacy gains—it only poisons chain analysis assumptions. This means PayJoin requires widespread network adoption to matter, while offering no immediate incentive for individual users to participate. Kompaktor is inherently a multi-party PayJoin with built-in cut-through, making it superior in almost every way: users get immediate privacy benefits, efficiency gains, and the heuristic-breaking comes as a bonus rather than the sole value proposition.

Lightning Network enables instant, cheap payments through channel networks. It excels at high-frequency small payments but involves channel management complexity and imperfect privacy (routing information leaks). Kompaktor complements Lightning by providing efficient, private on-chain channel management.

Ark achieves similar efficiency goals with a full Layer 2 architecture supporting off-chain transfers and instant settlement. It's more complex but more capable, representing where these concepts mature into production infrastructure.

Conclusion: Proof of What's Possible

Kompaktor matters as a demonstration of possibility. It proves that WabiSabi's cryptographic primitives—originally designed for privacy-focused mixing—can power radically efficient payment systems. The target of 50+ payments compacted into single outputs showcases Bitcoin's latent capacity when clever protocol design meets existing infrastructure.

Lolli Enables Lightning Network Withdrawals

Bitcoin rewards platform Lolli announced that Lightning Network withdrawals are now live for users. The update marks a milestone in the company’s restructuring following its acquisition by Thesis earlier in the year, aiming to address long-standing user demands for faster and cheaper access to earned rewards.

Who is Lolli?
Founded in 2018 by Alex Adelman and Matt Senter, Lolli is a rewards application that allows users to earn sats when shopping online at partner retailers. In July 2025, Lolli was acquired by Thesis, a venture studio that builds Bitcoin-native projects such as Mezo and Fold. Following the acquisition, Lolli focused on upgrading its infrastructure to support a “circular Bitcoin economy” and expanding its services globally.

Why Lightning Withdrawls
Prior to this update, Lolli users faced high withdrawal minimums (e.g., 30,000 sats) and slow processing times associated with on-chain transactions or with the recently integrated Mezo sidechain. To make the platform update, BTC withdrawals had additionally been suspended on the platform since July of 2025.

By implementing withdrawals on Lightning, Lolli can offer:

Lower costs: Fees are reduced, making it economically viable for users to withdraw smaller amounts of Bitcoin.
Speed: Settlement takes seconds rather than the minutes or days associated with traditional banking or on-chain transfers.
Control of earned rewards: This feature provides a simpler way for users to move their funds off the platform and into their own wallets, a capability users had requested for years.

How to Withdraw
The process requires a Lightning-compatible wallet (such as Wallet of Satoshi, Phoenix, Breez, or Alby). To withdraw funds, users must follow these steps:

Add a Lightning address (formatted like an email, e.g., you@wallet.com) to their Lolli account.

Select “Lightning” as the withdrawal method.

Specify the amount of sats to withdraw or select the “Max” button to withdraw the full balance.

Confirm the transaction to receive funds in seconds.

It’s absolutely wild to see LLMs using interfaces in NDK I literally just implemented and getting their uses right first time.

This is not only useful for nostr development.

This is useful for ALL development.

And requires cryptographic identity, web-of-trust, censorship-resistance and money.

All building blocks that are in our very robust toolbox.
