Today's Uber fuckery involved the guy saying he didn't take dogs. I said she's a service dog-- pointing to the inch-high letters on her harness that say SERVICE DOG! So he very reluctantly lets me in his car and he starts ranting about "fakers." So I talked to him about his rights under the law. The dog should be clean, well behaved, sitting calmly on the floor, not interacting with the driver. He said again he didn't know she was a sd, I asked him didn't he see her guiding me to the car? Bracing me down the steps, And then he is all astonished that I'm blind because and I quote, "I don't move like a blind person." *sighs* Ok, I am moving confidently because Say it again louder for the fools in the back.... I HAVE A SERVICE DOG! Also again wearing a harness, neon pink, with "service dog" everywhere on it. Honestly I think the guy tried getting out of taking us,, then realized I was not going to be intimidated, also I'm not putting up with whining or his victim mentality, instead I'm educating him about his rights because yes he has them, and then he comes back at me and tries to what infantilize me? You know, you can't ever say that dogs don't learn from one another. When baloo first came to live with us and be a part of our family, she was the most timid dog you could ever have imagined. She never got on the furniture. It's been about two years now and she got on the furniture consistently after a month or so of living with us and watching Phoenix and Callisto playing endless games of "the floor is lava" as they leap from chair to chair as well as sleeping in my bed at night. Well, she has finally learned the ultimate lesson… How to be rude and bossy… And who better to teach it to her then Phoenix and Callisto, the dream team of rude and bossy. I was sitting in the uppies chair, which is a large, sage green armchair. It is the only chair in my house large enough for the enormous brown dog. I was reading my book, and farting around on the Internet as one does, when she walked up to me and began poking me with her nose repeatedly. She has learned, also by watching Phoenix and Callisto that if she wants to get a deafblind person's attention, she can't just sit around and make eye contact or wine because I'm not going to notice. She has been doing the poking thing for about a year, but now apparently she has become brazen enough to begin poking me when she wants her chair. She has even resorted to placing her enormous brown paws on my feet and sort of putting her weight down on my toes… That is 100 pounds of labrador if anyone at home is playing along. So, Phoenix and Callisto have finally taught her how to be rude too. But you'll note, I am posting this from the much smaller recliner.

Today's frustration… I really wish people who are raising and training service dogs from puppyhood really understood that the more work they do with the dog when it is young, the less they will have to do with it when it is older in most cases. But there's always an excuse for why they are allowing behaviors like walking with a tight leash, not stopping at changes in elevation, etc. You are only hurting yourself in the end and making more work. Both of the dogs I raised from puppyhood were walking on a loose leash and stopping at all changes in elevation by the time they were six or seven months old. This made it much easier when it came time to teach the actual concepts of guide work and obstacle avoidance. Same with naming of objects. If you start when they are young and you consistently ask for behaviors, you are going to be much better off and far less frustrated. Also, it is far easier to reinforce these things with a 20 pound puppy than a 90 pound dog.

Score one for Deafblind workarounds. So one of the biggest problems for a Deafblind person who *requires* braille is that when I get a new device it doesn't have a pairing relationship with any of my braille displays. Which makes the device unusable. However the watch can be mirrored from the phone which does. Mirroring simply means that the screen of the watch is on the phone and you can interact on the phone and any gestures you do on the phone, such as opening apps, selecting items etc will be passed through to the watch. So I first got out 2 braille displays. One was paired to the phone, the other one was in pairing mode. I then mirrored the watch to my phone which was paired to display number one and now my watch has braille via the phone. So on the phone I go into the watch's settings, into accessibility and etc. There is where I find the braille settings and I ask the watch to search for braille display number 2. Once it finds it in the list of Bluetooth devices you now have a direct relationship with the watch and the braille display and no longer need the phone as a bridge. Then now that the watch has a direct relationship with one display I can set up any and all other displays with it as well. So I can use my chameleon with the watch when I'm out, and when I'm home it pairs to the mantis! I didn't need any help from a sighted/hearing person to do it! Go, team! Bear in mind i had it copy all of the old settings and things from the old watch so all of my voiceover settings and things were set up automatically. This would have been trickier if it had been my first watch or if there wasn't a backup from which to work! But all's well that ends well.

Almost a year ago Callisto and I set off alone on this wild adventure to New York City. We stayed in a really neat little hotel in Soho and I specifically picked it because it has a dog park on the premises… Of sorts a very citified dog park but a dog park nevertheless! It was only a short trip because New York City is too expensive for my blood so we couldn't stay very long, but we packed a lot of fun into those two days and I will never forget how simultaneously thrilled and terrified I was, a Deafblind spastic vertiginous woman with lung disease alone with her service dog! A dog that I trained myself from puppyhood. We spent time eating delicious food, going to the intrepid sea air and space museum, walking through Times Square just to say we did it and we could! My friend came and helped me finish cleaning, I was still cleaning when she got here but now it is done except the crate pan needs to finish drying and then I'll put it back. Anyway, she has taken her dogs and left her sick dog was doing a little bit better the last half hour so hopefully things have turned the corner but regardless, I no longer have six dogs in my house, two of whom are either very ill or recovering from surgery and I can focus on one. Something I've been thinking about while reading this sci fi book is this, why is this genre grouped with fantasy? On book websites or libraries you have broad categories like romance, drama, triller, memoirs and science fiction/fantasy. It has been my experience that SF people are SF people and fantasy people enjoy fantasy and there isn't a lot of blurring of the lines. Most sF lovers I know aren't interested in dragons, witches and fairies. And most fantasy lovers aren't interested in space and robots. I mean there's some crossover but thrillers aren't lumped into the same genre as say memoirs there's no category like that. I'm guessing SF got lumped into with Fantasy because they're both genres that rely a lot on making shit up. Societies, languages, races of humans and other creatures etc. I feel like fantasy tends to look backward while SF tends to look forward when they make a timeline for the book. Yes another generalization but... it is a thing. This has been my pointless ramble of the morning. I'm going out now for real.

Good morning from the beautiful bayou. It's in the 60's, with blue sky and sunshine. I exercised outdoors and have come in to start the hash browns cooking for breakfast hot-dish. This is hilarious. Phoenix has quite the fan club here at the hospital and SO MANY PEOPLE have come up to us and said "Oh Hello Phoenix it's so good to see you!" In the "doggie voice." Phoenix usually smiles and bats her eyelashes. She doesn't physically interact but she does display very friendly body language. when people walk up to Callisto and think she's Phee and use the voice on her, she gives them filthy looks and ignores them and the confusion is funny to observe. Then I tell them this is not Phoenix, and they realize Callisto is smaller and more blonde than Phee is. But those first 20 seconds after they say hello and they are getting the canine kiss off from Callisto are the best part of my morning. Literally if you are not her family or someone who is going to throw the ball she has less than zero fucks for anyone.

I also find mute filters are your friend because they help weed out stuff you aren't interested in. Such as for me if people are in the habit of live tooting tv programs or advertising radio shows or bible verses of the day etc. I create a mute filter with either the hashtag or particular words. And it takes a way a lot of the things that aren't meaningful for me.

Because there were at least 5 hashtags at the very beginning of said post and I'm reading everything on a 40 cell braille display, which means I get 40 characters at once before I need to scroll.... So if you choose to put more than say, 3 hashtags in the beginning of your post I'm probably moving on because my time for spending on the interwebs is not limitless... people are, of course free to do what they want but... All right, blind people can we talk about human guide for a moment? It used to be called sighted guide but at least hear people are using the phrase human guide because blind people can also guide other blind people. Here's the thing no one owes you human guide. If you expect to be guided somewhere that is taking someone's arm, then you need to ask them hopefully in advance. There are many reasons why another person may be uncomfortable providing human guide, perhaps they have a medical or psychiatric condition that make it difficult, unsafe or otherwise uncomfortable. Perhaps they just don't like other people and they don't want the responsibility. Perhaps they are themselves disabled and using a service animal and they feel it would be unfair to put that much responsibility on their animal. So, when you go somewhere and you think you are going to need it, it is better to ask in advance, and if you cannot ask in advance, then I would hope that you would be understanding if the person says no. Your orientation and mobility is your responsibility. Yes I just had this exact conversation with one of my students. I see a lot of entitlement around this issue and I think that more openness needs to be involved and more respect for people who are uncomfortable put into that role. And I am not talking here about walking with friends or family members or with other people whom you know are comfortable providing this type of support. I am talking about people that you don't know and expecting them to guide you. Case in point I cannot tell you how many blind people have just assumed that my sign language interpreter is going to guide them. The sign language interpreter with whom I work most frequently is actually incredibly uncomfortable taking blind people sighted guide because she has very severe ADHD and she is worried that someone is going to get hurt. She has the right to say no and when people have put her in an awkward place by asking her, she doesn't feel like she can say no because what kind of asshole refuses to guide a blind person. She feels like it makes her look like a jerk. So I think it is important to discuss these things and to take ownership of your orientation and mobility, and if you have poor skills in these areas, figure out how you're going to get around and if that is human guide, finding people who are willing to provide the service.

Hello and welcome to Saturday! This is my favorite part of the week because I just finished my hard workout and I have none of them for the next two days and only moderate exercise so that is a good feeling. Today involves fun walks for dogs, grocery delivery, and some time spent on Zoom. If I have the mental bandwidth, it also involves reviewing documents for my estate planning. Plus working on deductions for my taxes my great joy! Basically it's going to be a boring Saturday full of adulting chores, but I'm not going to be running around at top speed exhausting myself so there is a silver lining! It is going to be another day spent in the 80s at 95% humidity. Not looking forward to that but things should break tomorrow and we should get what remains of winter for a few days at least. This morning I am thankful for my air-conditioning!

It's a Sisyphus kind of day. Sisyphus is the guy in Greek mythology who managed to trick/annoy so many Gods that upon his death he was forced to roll a rock up a hill forever or face being crushed. When he would get his rock to the top, they would reappear at the bottom again. And thats what lung disease is like. You have to breathe to live, if you can't breathe, every other task becomes harder. If I'm to function I need to be able to walk and move under my own power while breathing. I exercise every day, but when i get an exaserbation or pneumonia then it's like all that work I put into exercising and keeping myself well and working to improve or at least maintain my limited lung capacity has disappeared and I'm back at the bottom of the hill again with my rock, trying to push so I don't get crushed and things like emptying the dryer or doing a 30 minute workout leave me gasping and trembling on the floor ... Going to bed and staying there for the next 2 weeks sounds wonderful. But i am going back to work on 5 January I need to be able to walk 2-3 blocks each way whenever I leave or enter a school. So I can't just lay around because if I'm going to be functional at work I need to keep pushing and pushing but it is so fucking exhausting and discouraging when the simplest things make my lips turn blue. Anyway we can see that I'm starting my day with my very own whine and cheese party. Yikes! But I got 16 minute miles in my workout it was hard and awful and I hated every stupid, sweaty, blue-lipped second. But it's also the thing I need to be doing if I don't want to lose even more stamina. Ugh! If you made it this far you deserve a cookie.

Good morning, joyful, and blessed solstice to my Witches and other celestial celebrators. I have my Solstice candle lit and I'm about to open my final advent gift. I am also planning on going outside and doing some gentle yoga and walking outdoors while the sun rises. I'm just grateful I can celebrate Solstice at home. It's going to be 80 degrees out so not quite feeling the winter vibe but thats OK, I'll bring my own winter. I've got pumpkin spice almond milk creamer in my iced coffee and later I'm going to make gingerbread French toast. I'm not feeling as well as I'd hoped I would by this point but I'm also impatient. Dinner tonight was a meatball sandwich on French bread with sautéed mushroom stems and homemade dairy free cauliflower Alfredo sauce. There were also stuffed mushrooms on the side and there will be pumpkin spice sugar cookies for dessert. It is a good thing that I do not share a living space with another human being because I ate an obscene amount of garlic, and I'm sure the aroma coming out of every single pore is incredibly potent.

I had just finished a breathing treatment and was sitting on the side of the bed, gathering the fortitude to stand up and attempt to move through the universe under my own power, when Baloo stood up on the bed, and walked behind me to rest her chin on my shoulder and press her cheek against mine. She stood still, leaning into me with all 110 lbs of her brown self while I put my arms around her. I can't remember the first time she ever initiated this but today it hit me that she was doing it. When we met her at the shelter about 15 months ago it was very obvious that human or canine snuggling was not something she'd ever experienced and that getting too close to people for too long usually didn't end up being good for her. She would let you touch her, but you had to be very calm and quiet and slow. And 15 months later she deliberately will come to me to request snuggles. Every night she is snuggled up against me, or phoenix or Callisto while she sleeps. Last night i think she was snuggling with all of us at once making herself the giant brown filling of a great snuggle sandwich. So I'm not even sure why I'm writing this, but it brought me joy, and i know sometimes joy can be thin on the ground so i hope it brings you joy too. And comfort that even if it's just for one big brown dog somewhere in the world life has gotten better and she has found a family who loves her.

I've been out of maintenance inhalers for about 3 days now and this morning i figured out that the pharmacy has been trying to contact the old pulmonologist for refills instead of the new one. So I texted the new one directly and hopefully this gets things moving in the right direction because my lungs are mad as fuck and if we don't actually get this fixed soon I'm worried it could turn into an exacerbation, which will involve even more steroids and so ... Here's hoping we can make the magic happen today! Anyway, hello and welcome to another Monday! It's back to work for me. Ugh I hate exercise! HATE IT! I wish it were not necessary because while the long term benefits are undeniable.... Fucking fuck the short-term hell is hellish and I HATE IT. I know if I quit exercising I'd lose all my ground and would basically be forced to quit my job and be a shut in and on days like today that seems so fucking tempting I'm not going to lie because I loath, hate, and despise exercise. From the breathlessness and the elevated heart rate to the sensory hell of sweating , sweaty hair, sweaty clothes while gasping and cursing the stupid apple fitness trainer who was probably born running 5k's. I hate it! OK I'm done having a tantrum now. I am going to do a breathing treatment and then solace myself with biscuits and gravy. Starting my morning on the my chart website looking at my lab results and i know for people who can see this is probably no big deal but having private access to my medical information is amazing and liberating and I will never stop being grateful that I am born disabled during the time of the internet. Nobody is reading it to me, or interpreting them and trying to fingerspell all the words... i don't have to share my information with anyone if i don't want to. All right I have decided that tomorrow I'm going to make a roast dinner and I want to attempt to make Yorkshire pudding!
