I mean, they *have* made some good progress (first commercially-developed jet to go supersonic), and they have their own engine design to power their passenger jet, with orders from several major carriers for planes. ETA is unclear though, and testing and regulatory approval is non-trivial for this level of engineering build. Getting their turbines into gas generators for data centers is an easier (if far less environmentally sustainable) short-term path to revenue.

I guess I haven't seen that particular design pattern (just disabled notifications, restarted Signal, and got prompted -- "not now / enable" -- so yeah, confirming what you see. It's IMO on a par with prodding the user about their PIN, which is at worst mildly annoying but serves a useful purpose).

(I still maintain that a messaging app that supports audio and video calls, but has no notifications enabled, is effectively useless -- but end users should have the option to choose that. I'd argue a better UX here would be "yes / no / ask me later" and if you pick "no" you get an explicit warning that you will never be notified of any incoming calls or messages; at least that way unsophisticated users are aware of the risks and sophisticated ones can still make that tradeoff.

Tradeoffs are really key here, and we should support maximum end user control while also being very explicit about tradeoffs to avoid surprises.)

Last year scientists showed how to turn lunar regolith into water and oxygen (using solar-powered process); now they have figured out how to make methane as well, which means we could generate both water and rocket fuel from only components already present on the lunar surface in a process powered by the sun. (Engineering challenges remain, but we have multiple proofs of concept in this area from independent teams so far, which is very promising.)

the thing that has killed me more often than anything else the past 15 years is disk I/O (and that has finally mostly disappeared with the ubiquitous rise of SSDs). Resurrected a 10yo iMac for one of my kids, too slow to even be bearable despite 8GB/quad-core 3.5GHz Intel, had it boot/run from external SSD and now it sails right along.

the worst is when there's clearly something blocking other things from executing and there's no obvious culprit, so annoying.
