Snæfellsjökull, a 700,000-year-old glacier-capped stratovolcano in western #Iceland.

The most recent eruption occurred around 1,800 years ago, but the volcano is still considered active, with the potential for future eruptions.

Sadly, according to glaciologists, the glacier is predicted to disappear by 2100.

The name Snæfellsjökull¹ literally means "Snow mountain glacier"

Last Thursday, we drove up to and along the shores of the River Tay. Our main goal was a ruined abbey in the lovely village of Balmerino.

It was a gorgeous February day, cold but with bright sunshine and blue skies. The snowdrops were brightening the grass beneath the trees, the moon was rising, and the honey coloured stones of the old abbey spoke of history.

The existence of other at least three other circles, several arcs, single stones and alignments in the area implies that this late Neolithic era construction, built approximately 5000 years ago, has been used extensively for ritual activity.

These stones almost certainly pre-date Stonehenge.

#Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are made of water ice crystals that form below -120°C (-184°F) and at ≈ 76-85km (47-53mi), the highest clouds in our atmosphere.

NLCs are only visible during twilight and usually summer from latitudes of ±50° and ±70°, and when the lower atmosphere are in Earth's shadow but these clouds are in sunlight.

Nacreous or polar stratospheric clouds form in the winter stratosphere, at altitudes of 15 to 25 km (9 to15.5 miles) and at very low temperatures below −78 °C (−108 °F)
They are seen in winter when the sun is below the horizon, shining brightly well before dawn or after dusk.
This type of PSC is composed of super-cooled ice crystals which are not harmful to the atmosphere.

8:30 am in late March and, through my bedroom window, an icy sky and the rising sun combined to create this lovely spectacle.

As well as a 22° halo (the circle around the sun) this strong display is also showing a sundog (22° parhelion) on each side of the sun, a parhelic circle (crossing the circle and passing through both sundog spots,) an upper tangent arc (at the top of the circle,) and a sun pillar (going upwards from the sun.)

Scarista Beach on the southern coast of Na Hearadh - Harris. With Lewis (Lodaidh) this is the main island of the Outer Hebrides (Na h-Eileanan A-Muigh) where Gaelic (Gàidhlig) is the first language.

This stretch of golden sand is absolutely huge, and the water is crystal clear. I had wanted to climb to the top of Ceapabhal for the view, but we were only on the island for a few days and there was so much left to see.

Supernumerary Bow

When sunlight passes through raindrops, it undergoes refraction, reflection and interference. The latter occurs when two or more light waves overlap and either reinforce or cancel each other out.

The interference pattern depends on the size and distribution of the raindrops. In the case of supernumeraries, they are created by small raindrops that have almost identical sizes.

Red Sky At Night...

September 2014, and the Holuhraun eruption of Bárðarbunga is well under way. We stopped for the night at a farm to the south of Vatnajökull glacier, and the eruption plume filled the sky.

At 18:45 when the sun set, the afterglow caused by volcanic ejecta - oxides of sulphur and thin clouds of tiny sulphuric acid droplets lofted into the stratosphere - yielded lurid but beautiful colours.

Wilderness

A clear day in mid-November and we're crossing Jökuldalsheiði.

The Central Highland of #Iceland covers most of the interior of the country. It's situated primarily above 300 meters (1000 feet) and is uninhabitable. The soil is mostly volcanic ash, the rivers don't have bridges, and the terrain is filled with basalt mountains and lava fields.

It's also extremely beautiful, albeit in a desolate way. No wonder NASA trained astronauts here.

Early March, an accumulation of massive icicles bathed by spray and covered in snow.

A heavy snowstorm has just passed, and Gullfoss - the "Golden Falls" - is heavily iced. Fed by Langjökull glacier, Hvítá - "White River" - plunges 11 metres (36 ft) over rocks to a central platform area before dropping another 21m (69ft) into a chasm.
This structure was on the eastern bank of the top cascade.

Sunbeams

A dreary July day in the south-east of #Iceland. It's been drizzling and raining and, at 19:30 as the sun was going down, some small breaks appeared in the clouds.

What seemed to be a fruitless day for photography was crowned by a lovely display of sunbeams, highlighting Vatnajökull and its glacier tongues, and piercing the ground level mists gathering around the peaks.

Remnants of icebergs floating near the shore of the lake.

These exquisitely carved slivers of ice once fell as snowflakes,
which piled up atop a mountain,
which then became part of a glacier,
which calved into the water,
which the tides and the winds grounded here,
where it began to melt slowly
for me to find.

This lovely horseshoe extends ≈ 200m/656ft from the initial plunge to the last drop from the top of the rocks and into the river.

Travelling down the coast, we realised that we were being caught by a fog bank approaching rapidly from behind us. We parked in a lay-by and saw that the mist and cloud had already begun to shroud the coastline ahead, and we were in a pincer movement. We waited until the clouds were overhead and overtaking us to take this shot.

The pointed mountain is Mælifell (483m) in Múlaþing, eastern #Iceland.

A glacial tongue of Vatnajökull and one of the most captivating places we've visited. A foggy day like this just increases the otherworldly beauty.

Svínafellsjökull in Skaftafell Nature Reserve, SE #Iceland. The dark patch on top of the ice on the opposite side is a landslip. Access to the sides has now been limited due to the shrinking glacier moving away from the edges and leaving them dangerously unsupported.

Often overlooked due to its proximity to Goðafoss, this neighbouring cascade has the same volume but is much narrower, forming an interesting chute.

The geology around it is particularly beautiful too, with basalt formations and rock arches. In winter, we've seen ptarmigan in these caves, white plumage obvious against the brown rock.

Tidal Race

This glacial lagoon is connected directly to the sea by a river channel. Twice a day, the tide refills it and then empties the excess back out into the ocean, refloating icebergs and taking them out to sea.

This process isn't a gentle flow, as you can see. I became fascinated by this chevron of surging water where the channel narrows to pass beneath the bridge.

February and, after a few hours at the ice cliffs of Kaldakinn, we turned to drive back to our hotel. The black sand bar of Sjávarsandur was locked in ice and covered in snow. Across Skjálfandi bay the mountains behind Húsavík were visible.

Our guide said he could see seals on the ice. I still can't.

Sometimes, the #aurora can take you by surprise.

We'd been sitting in a safe spot for hours, waiting for the chance of a display. The KP forecast was dropping, the air was freezing and it was getting towards midnight so we decided to head back to the hotel in Akureyri, northern #Iceland.

Halfway down the mountain, the sky started to dance. Which is how we came to be photographing the #NorthernLights from a roadside ditch!

Elliðatindar, about 915m/3000ft tall, with a magnificent vertical rock wall about 400m/1300ft across that stands at the front of the mountain's edge. The highest peaks are above and beyond the hammerhead-shaped rock.

This extraordinary mountain has slopes that hold some amazing volcanic features including lava caves and beautifully warped basalt columns.
