For a long time, my audio equipment consisted of 4 "inherited" old speakers, 2 amplifiers (all of that made in Polish People's Republic) and a bunch of wires to connect it all to a surround sound card and one another (to provide a "quasi quadro" setup). Unfortunately, at some point it stopped being enough. On one hand, the politics of streaming services and poor GPU performance made it impossible for me to watch 2160p otherwise than through builtin TV apps. On the other, the performance of my old amplifiers started degrading. Eventually, I've decided to buy a digital amplifier (an old model at that).

My first setup was entirely based on HDMI ARC. The PC was connected directly to the TV, and the TV sent the audio to the AVR. Unfortunately, due to the TV's limitations, I was limited to stereo PCM audio. For movies, I could just use HDMI passthrough and send compressed audio instead. However, that wasn't possible for games.

My second setup was based on connecting the PC to the AVR, and using it passthrough feature. Now I had proper surround sound, and it was good for movies and gaming. I was content until I've discovered that HDMI input is limited to 48 kHz sample rate. While according to the manual, the AVR is capable of going up to 192 kHz via its media player.

So yesterday I've worked hard and finally figured out how to get playback over DLNA working. I thought I'm going to have to create a HEOS account, but it wasn't necessary in the end. It also means that I no longer need to start looking for a proper music player for the PC. And I have the song title on the front display.

PS. I presume you also keep pen needles on the AVR. Unfortunately, they turned out to be insufficient as a cat deterrent.

Capitalism is not a good system for creators (artists, writers, but also programmers, etc.). Creators must find a way to earn money to survive: either by selling their creations, or by finding another job and turning their creative work into a "hobby".

The "hobbyists" are usually losing, unless they happen to be born privileged. On one hand, they are going to be exploited by employers, who will take away the time and energy they need for creative work. On the other, by vendors, who are going to try to take away their hard-earned money. Many of them will never reach their full potential, some will abandon creative work entirely. Though sometimes these exact experiences do result in unique art.

"Professional" creators don't have it easy either. The apologists of capitalism will praise "free market" as a good thing for art — after all, the "best" are rewarded, others have motivation to improve, and the "worst" will naturally have to find another job (and nobody will have to claim responsibility for kicking them out!). In reality, what we get is a cult of khaltura and elitism.

On one hand, the poor have limited access to culture. On the other, elites control the art. The creators who happen to be popular either among the rich or among lots of people, will be in good standing. These who create only for a small niche will not.

And then, the parasites came whose only purpose is to make money on the creative work of others. They exploit creators and consumers, degenerate and "standardize" creative works, and aggressively pursuit independent creators. Eventually, bigger and bigger monopolies emerge, and there is no "competition" anymore. Simultaneously, consumers become "monopolized" (e.g. through streaming services). The final product of all this process is generative "AI", the wet dream of capitalism — claim all creative work as your own, don't pay a penny to the original creators and sell its cheap copies in thousands to the consumers.

Capitalism only serves making the elite rule more and more aspects of human life, and finding ways to exploit more and more people.

#AntiCapitalism

In the best case, it's just "adding less pollution". In the worst case, it's just moving pollution elsewhere. Manufacturing, transporting and maintaining all these panels, inverters etc. requires materials and energy, and every step of the way produces pollution.

Secondly, AI data centers waste lots of water. There's not much water in the desert, so that idea isn't really feasible. And even if it were, wasting water is still harmful.

Usually I'm the only person in my home who drinks kefir. So I split a liter-sized bottle of kefir into 10 equal parts. Thanks to that, I don't have to recompute insulin every time, and these portions fit my meals well.

Of course, sometimes somebody else decides to take a random part of my kefir, and break my system. Eventually, I end up with partial portion at the bottom of the bottle, and need to combine it with a new bottle. And then I try to minimally adjust the parts to even it out again.

Sometimes I even manage to do that before they break it again.

#LiveWithDiabetes

Truth be told, I'm incapable of "living the moment". I can't stop worrying that at some point, I won't have any food to eat left. I don't have a job yet, but I'm already worrying that when I do, I'm going to lose it soon. And if I have to buy something, I immediately start worrying that it won't last long. Long story short, I worry about the future all the time.

It may sound absurd, but at the same time, I don't have any real plans for the future. I'm not saying that I'm not expecting anything good. I have some general ideas, on one hand of things that would be less or more nice to me, on the other hand of the useful things I could still do. But that's nowhere near planning your future.

I'm not expecting to retire at some point. I'm not trying hard to find a way to pay the retirement fund fees. Perhaps it's just my excuse to justify my situation (long-term lack of job and insufficient income to pay them), but I'm not really convinced I'd live to see my retirement.

I don't want to be all negative, but all things considered, I don't let my thoughts wander far into the future. Between the political situation, the climate crisis and my health — let's just say I don't want to assume that I can postpone things far into the future.

I'm worried about things that can affect me directly, and things that can affect the society as a whole. I'm worried that something could hurt me or my loved ones. I'm worried I won't be able to get medicine or food. I know that these hot spells will only get worse — and I will have to choose between staying at home and seeing my diabetes get worse; or going out, and taking greater and greater risks. And I'm afraid that I'm going to be left all alone one day.

And so, I'm a walking contradiction: a person who can neither "live the moment", nor think of the future.

#ActuallyAutistic

The three kinds of #Python packages:

1. Packages that replace dead packages and have names suffixed with a number: htmlmin2, progressbar2.
2. Packages that replace dead packages and their names are a variation of the original name: pytest-lazy-fixtures (for pytest-lazy-fixture), orderly-set (for ordered-set).
3. Packages that replace dead packages and have completely different names: veilchen (for bottle).

Extra points if you break backwards compatibility in the name of cosmetic changes ("I didn't like this function name"). And you get a jackpot if you keep the old module names while at it, so that you prevent the "old" being installed alongside "new".

#Gentoo

One more story today, this one's more recent.

Two facts for a start. Firstly, my phone battery is not very good anymore. I find it safer to charge it before I leave the train, even though I'm on battery saving all the time. Secondly, my charging cable is a bit damaged — but not so bad that I would find it hard to find a working position.

So one Sunday I'm getting on the "Muszelka" train, plugging the charger in, and nothing happens. I'm trying to move the charger, move the cable, neither helps. I'm waiting till the train departs, in case the power wasn't on yet — and still nothing. Well, it happens, the sockets are probably disconnected today.

So I take out my powerbank, connect the phone and it starts charging. I take the phone, do stuff, put it back, and it stops charging. I'm fighting the cable again, but I can't find a single "good" position anymore. Did it die? Well, time to switch into airplane mode and save battery aggressively. And in the evening, I connect the charger at home, and it charges just fine. Well, we'll see tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I take a regular train to Zbąszynek (then change to Rzepin). The charger goes into the socket, and again nothing happens. I take out the powerbank, connect it, put the phone back and leave it alone, so I wouldn't interrupt the charging. Nevertheless, after a short while it stops charging, even though I didn't touch it. Is the powerbank broken perhaps? Well, another day in airplane mode.

Back home, I had an idea to charge the powerbank instead (even though it claimed to be fully charged), and apparently that helped.

Conclusions?

1. The cable is damaged, but it's not so bad that I couldn't use it (but I really should get a new one finally).
2. Two days in a row I hit trains with disconnected power sockets.
3. Powerbank didn't work, even though it claimed to be fully charged.

And today, something completely different. Successive photos that don't move along x/y/z axes much, but instead run along the t axis. The pond itself is along a bridge near Kątnik.

The successive photos show seasonal and long-term changes:
1) 2016-06-08
2) 2023-11-06
3) 2024-05-05
4) 2024-08-18

I may have more photos of it. The #Poznań — #Kołobrzeg (and the other way around) trains take one of the two routes: either a shorter one through Karlino, or roundabout through Koszalin. When people buy a ticket at the ticket office, they normally get one for the shorter route.

So if the train takes the roundabout route, the conductor immediately starts charging people the difference (1,30 PLN, for a single regular ticket, i.e. very small amount of money). Surely that makes sense.

Especially that they don't even suggest that there's a possible change in Białogard that lets you reach Kołobrzeg 15 minutes earlier, without the need to pay extra.

#rail

New on blog: "#Gentoo: profiles and keywords rather than releases"

"""
Different distributions have different approaches to releases. For example, Debian simultaneously maintains multiple releases (branches). The “stable” branch is recommended for production use, “testing” for more recent software versions. Every two years or so, the branches “shift” (i.e. the previous “testing” becomes the new “stable”, and so on) and users are asked to upgrade to the next release.

Fedora releases aren’t really branched like Debian. Instead, they make a new release (with potentially major changes for an upgrade) every half a year, and maintain old releases for 13 months. You generally start with the newest release, and periodically upgrade.

Arch Linux follows a rolling release model instead. There is just one branch that all Arch users use, and releases are made periodically only for the purpose of installation media. Major upgrades are done in-place (and I have to say, they don’t always go well).

Now, Gentoo is something of a hybrid, as it combines the best of both worlds. It is a rolling release distribution with a single shared repository that is available to all users. However, within this repository we use a keywording system to provide a choice between stable and testing packages, to facilitate both production and development systems (with some extra flexibility), and versioned profiles to tackle major lock-step upgrades.
"""

Many people on the spectrum have various difficulties communicating with others. As a result, we become discouraged from conversing, and effectively make it much harder to make friends and keep our friendships in good shape. Sometimes we misunderstand what others are saying and we become humiliated. Other times others misunderstand us and are offended by what we said. Or conversations in a group are so livid and chaotic we simply can't manage to say anything.

Combined with other problems we have, the highest form of friendship for us is with a person who lets us be ourselves. Someone we managed to trust and someone we opened up to. And that ain't easy.

I find it easier to trust some people than others. And I suspect that there are people that I couldn't trust ever, no matter how hard they would try to gain my trust. Then, in addition to my best wishes, there's the matter of the right environment. I don't open up on a busy pavement or crowded park. Things like that are hard to say, and I can't do that when some passerby would force me to stop mid-sentence by entering the hearing range.

We can spend a lot of time with such a person and enjoy it. I'm talking of a person that knows our biggest weaknesses, that don't force us to keep constant watch over our behavior, or to worry all the time that something could happen. You could say such relationships don't drain our social battery (at least directly, there's still some drain e.g. from leaving our home). Unfortunately, this comes with a risk: if that person fails our trust, we're going to find it even harder to trust anyone.

The second category are "regular" acquaintances. We also find joy in spending time with them, but it drains our battery. And it becomes problematic if they expect more from us than we can actually provide. In the worst case, sometimes we abandon these acquaintances when things go really bad for us.

Then, there are conversations with random people. Sometimes they are joyful, sometimes not. Their main advantage is that we can reasonably assume we're not going to meet them again. Sometimes this makes talking to them easier — but also sometimes we end up regretting that we won't.

#ActuallyAutistic

I can't bump #uv again, because it — once again — switched to requiring the very newest #RustLang compiler, released not even a week ago. Of course, the new release of the compiler breaks some crates. Of course, since everything is pinned in Rust, we now have to go through tremendous effort patching stuff before we'll be able to get the new version in.

But no, Rust is going great. Also, don't forget that it's Python breaking backwards compatibility all the time.

Also, this is why gccrs will never work. What's the advantage of having an alternative compiler when it will need to catch up with the reference implementation within days of release?

https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/37727#issuecomment-2251579547

For a long time, I was convinced that I've set my #Android phone to dark theme. And I kept wondering why app after app doesn't respect that, and I kept setting apps to dark theme explicitly.

Recently, it occurred to me that perhaps the light theme would work better in sunlight (and it does!). After digging up the deeply hidden color theme option, I've discovered… that it was set to automatic, which apparently… is based on wallpaper. Whatever that means. So I've set light mode explicitly, and went to reset all apps to use system theme again, or "automatic".

Well, apparently not all apps actually support using system theme, or do it correctly. For example, for Element, "system theme" actually means automatically switching between light and dark theme based on the clock. Sigh.

The most recent #Django releases, 5.0.5 and 4.2.12 are broken. Most likely they were done on #Windows, and that obviously is sufficient to break stuff.

So far, we've noticed the following issues:
1. The directory is named lowercase `django-X.Y.Z` instead of capital-case `Django-X.Y.Z` (the filename remains capital-case).
2. All files have CRLF line endings instead of LF.
3. All files that should have the executable bit, have lost it.

As a result, the releases don't pass their own tests.

I hope to report this upstream, but their Trac is down now. So you can't even download the releases right now.

#Gentoo #Python
