Ireland has become a really popular location for the hyperscalers and AI data centers.

Depending on whether you include construction or not there are between 3500 and 20000 people employed in the 82 data centers we have here at last count.

Out of a working population of about 4million that’s 0.5% at best.

Datacenters also now consume 23% of our electricity, impacting the price the rest of us pay.

Whatever they might do, providing employment is not one of those things.

I had a series of attempts to quit smoking in the 2010s.

Tried and quickly failed a few times, then got serious and managed to stay quit for most of a year. Fell off that wagon because of life stress.

Around 2014 I decided I had to try again and stick with it. Made a detailed plan, including a conscious effort to change habits that aligned with smoking. I also took up a new habit / hobby I didn’t associate with smoking and that really helped.

Never looked back.

We got quite the visitor moored off Helvick today.

The 100 year old A.K. ILEN, a 56-foot wooden sailing ketch, built in 1926 in Baltimore, Cork. It is notable as Ireland's last remaining traditional ocean-going wooden sailing ship.

Spent a lot of its life working in the Falklands before being repatriated in 1997 and is now operated by https://sailingintowellness.ie/fleet/

For some reason I can’t get the Father Ted scene out of my head where Ted is trying to explain the difference between small and far away to Dougal using plastic toy cows.

I know that’s very unfair, and this is really technically fascinating but it is funny that we can have things out there that we thought might have been really hot and 14bn ly away but now seem to be very cool and a helluva lot closer.

There were over 3600 measles cases in the UK last year, up from 350 in 2023 and well above the ~ 500 cases per annum rate of the last 15 years or so.

This year is probably going to be worse.

I started with Pyramids and got hooked. If the flood of characters in books like Hogfather was putting you off the Pyramids has a tighter cast and is a much more self contained story.

Same. This is one of the major features of Mastodon for me.

It means I can collapse my feed in a way I mostly control so things I probably want to avoid permanently ( e.g US politics ) and stuff I just want to be able to control how much I see by default ( TV/movie spoilers , Sports results) show up just with my custom label that I need to click to expand before I see what’s behind it.

It’s not perfect but it absolutely improves the experience.
