I genuinely think one of the most harmful things to my quality of life and mental health the last five years has been being forced to live in the suburbs.

It’s the little things - hours lost to traffic and driving that I could spend reading on a train or bus, being unable to just go outside and walk around, not having a cafe, library, or even non-sports bar open after 6 pm), and everything just designed to be as low stimulus and inoffensive as possible. For an ADHD brain, it just drains me of so much life. And I really do rely on having places outside the house to do things like write because of how my brain gets stuck at home and needs fresh stimulus.

It seems like we’re still going to be stuck in this situation for now, since I want to live with my wife (and can’t afford not to), which means being within roughly 30 minutes of her work.

I don’t understand why anyone would actively choose to live in the suburbs and really wish we had other choices available to us.

The infamous "3-items rule" that was used to arrest transfems in New York in the mid-20th century wasn't an actual law. It was a rule of thumb that if you were wearing at least 3 items that matched your AGAB, you wouldn't be arrested for "cross-dressing." Thing is, there was no specific law against the practice nor requiring 3 items, but it became the effective practice of the NYPD, making it a de facto law.

It’s kinda bonkers to me that the way anti-trans bigots respond to finally learning that trans men exist is to just amen their anti-trans laws to do exclusively transmisogyny instead. Like, they could have responded by reflecting and realizing how stupid their beliefs were, but nope, just double down on the bigotry instead.

Thing is, trans men and trans mascs will still be targeted for violence through these laws. Just like bigots don’t care that Sikhs aren’t Muslims when they do an Islamophobia, they don’t parse which flavor of trans a person is. Since the anti-trans bathroom laws started going into effect, many of the high profile cases of people being harassed and assaulted when entering a “women’s” restroom have been transmasculine people, with their perpetrators often calling them trans women. Similarly, when a trans boy was forced to compete in wrestling against girls, his image has been spread around with people claiming he’s a trans girl cheating at sports.

Basically, they will make all our lives unlivable in the end, even if their specific bigotry is targeted at transfeminine people primarily.

Up thread, the whole point was that testosterone and masculinity is not inherently bad or violent, and that was the point. Ain’t none of us arguing men are bad for having a libido (hint hint: several of us are trans women and lived being seen as men for decades and actively parse the difference), but for some reason you’ve decided that’s something we’re saying? So who is it you are actually arguing with?

And the reason you might think that way is exactly in what you just said: “men shouldn’t feel bad for wanting to do stuff TO women”. Not WITH but TO….that’s it right there. Woman aren’t objects, we’re people. The men who want to do things WITH women will often find straight women who very much want to do things with them too. The ones who want to do things TO us are the ones who give off vibes that they don’t differentiate between sex and violence, and that’s something we pick up on and want nothing to do with. So, if you have folks saying you’re being creepy, I suggest reflecting on that and doing the work on yourself to learn how to do things with people and not to them.

Transphobia often gets discussed as personal attitudes or explicit anti-trans policies, but the wider cis world often doesn’t see or understand the structural transphobia that impacts our lives. A big one that is impacting me again: discontinuities.

When we transition, our life course, narratives, and social network experience many different discontinuities. An area where this can have big material consequences is in a professional or academic career.

When applying to a job or a university, there is an assumption that a person can list the places with their relevant experience and then those people can be contacted and asked about the person. Well, if your name has changed, as well as your gender identity and presentation, there’s a whole host of problems this introduces. For example, I can list one of the places I worked or went to school before transition, but then I also have to out myself as trans and give my deadname to the place I’m applying to if they might reach out to check if I worked or graduated from there. Additionally, that then outs me to those people from the past as trans, who may be transphobic and give me a bad reference.

Additionally, a lot of us face transphobia after coming out and may be more likely to be laid off or fired as a result. So then one of our only potential references that knows us by our current name and identity may be much less likely to give us a good recommendation. We’re basically put at the whims of those that employ us in ways that creates extra layers of intimidation and pressure, and may lead to us putting up with transphobia or worse due to that precarity.

In my experience, I went from having a stellar resume that demonstrated 15+ years of experience with lots of recommendations and references to my resume looking either a lot like someone who only has 1 or 2 years of experience or I have to out myself and also share the ways I’ve been mistreated since transition. All of which makes a potential employer hesitant to hire us.

There is a reason why there is a trans wage gap that is bigger than most other wage gaps, and why a fuck ton of us have to turn to sex work to pay the bills.

I love red leaf lettuce and spinach…but I usually don’t remember to eat even half of it before it goes bad. Fresh tomatoes, literally one of my favorite foods in the world, but half of what I buy will probably go bad (yes, if I buy 10, 5 will go bad and if I buy 2, 1 will go bad). Any vegetable that requires cooking - I’m going to buy you with big ambitions and plans, but you’re going to be nasty and brown before I remember to cook you.

Um...so any anthropologist will point you towards the hundreds of hunter-gatherer and small agricultural societies they have studied that suggest low rates of intra-community aggression, high rates of EVERYONE taking care of children, and being much more likely to be matriarchal or matrilineal in structure. This was most of our evolutionary history before large-scale, settled agriculture and the formation of states. Like....they are picturing Hobbes' State of Nature and not any real time or place that has ever existed!!!

The emphasis on differences in "physical capabilities" hit much harder with the invention of the plow and other types of activities that required more upper-body muscle. Archeological studies suggest much greater exposure to human violence after settled agriculture begins too, with the formation of states leading to full-on war instead of symbolic inter-clan fights or livestock raids.

Heck, there are even settled cultures like the Mosuo where men are more likely to be taking care of children!

Psychologists, when talking about demonstrated gender differences, have a really bad habit of physiologically essentializing the differences and talking about men and women not like part of a spectrum of diversity of human embodiment and experience, but like they are different animals. It makes me want to scream.

This also is where we often see evolutionary psychology as a discipline go completely off the rails into misogyny land. Whenever I read the "hypothesis" an evolutionary psychologist puts forward on gender differences, it sounds like they have never spoken to an anthropologist. Instead, their assumed evolutionary pressures look more like the Flinstones than anything that actually ever happened. Just going to cook this a bit: one of the greatest pleasures and joys of living in a human body is available to us literally at any time and for free. And it can be enjoyed in abundance. Literally, you can just masturbate any time, day or night, and have a bit of happiness. This is why capitalist societies are reinforced by religious and cultural ideologies that want to criminalize, pathologize, and make you feel guilty for both masturbation and sex. It can be available for free and without profit to anybody, and can’t be fenced off like the public commons to be rented or sold.

This is also why they work so hard to make us think that we need a partner who has rare and special traits to feel satisfied with sex. They want us to desire something they can turn into a commodity. So even racist beauty standards and fatphobia serve the capitalist effort by trying to undermine our sexual satisfaction. But all one has to do is have a single fun sexy time with a partner that isn’t considered conventionally “sexy” to realize it’s bullshit.

Literally, sexual pleasure and joy, whether by oneself or with a partner, remains an abundant resource for satisfaction that is free and relatively easy to accomplish. Everything that feeds into trying to restrict, undermine, and make us feel guilty for it will fail by simply experiencing this pleasure and joy.

What does the immediate motive for the Minneapolis school shooting seem to be?

An extremist fandom subculture.

For those that don’t know, there is an online subculture that practices obsessive fandom of mass shooters. They call themselves TCC for “True Crime Community” (not the general sense of the term of people who watch or listen to true crime shows). Many have said the shooter’s videos and journals seem incoherent or contradictory because they are looking for an ideology, but that’s because it’s not about ideology in the classic sense. This subculture obsesses about school shooters and mass shooters, creates memes about them (the shooter’s guns and journals had tons of internet memes, including the Loss meme), they cosplay as school shooters (this is why there are kmfdm stickers and shirts in the shooter’s videos, and they talked about putting together a school shooter cosplay), and they encourage each other to imitate the shooters by doing one.

It’s of note that this subculture actually is more likely to produce shooters who are women or of other minority groups. This shooter referenced on her gun a girl who committed a school shooting that was a part of TCC. There have been other women and girls who have attempted or made plans to coming out of this space. And there was also a “Black white supremacist” who committed mass violence too from TCC.

It also appears that the shooter was exposed to or spent time around anti-trans detransitioner rhetoric. They were no longer identifying as a woman, and were talking about detransitioning because they can’t ever “actually” be a girl. If anything, this shows how anti-trans rhetoric and policies feed hopelessness and isolation, making individuals more vulnerable to radicalization.

All in all, this points to the desperate need to continue creating spaces that bring in and help young marginalized folks connect and feel like they have a life and a future. Isolation and hatred make them vulnerable and we can do something about that.

So I have a big favor to ask: help me make part of my portion of the rent this month. My total portion of the rent is more than this, but my partner can cover the rest as long as I can meet $700 a month. My unemployment insurance will run out soon, so I'm trying to stretch it for a few months, and I can do that with your help!

I am preparing to apply to graduate schools for a masters in social work or a masters in clinical psychology. I am also working with limited spoons from disability and burnout after losing my job earlier this year. Had a big stop-me-in-my-tracks moment during therapy this morning. My therapist suggested using an Internal Family Systems lens to something we've been working on.

Until recently, I used to have a nightly habit of saying horrible things to myself as I fell asleep, "You are such a burden, and so off-putting. You are always going to be alone and you don't belong, you know? You really should give up"....that kind of thing. I jokingly call them "nightly negations" instead of "daily affirmations," cause that is basically what I'm doing with roughly an equivalent negative impact on my mental health.

Well, in talking it out, I said I didn't really understand what this part of me has been trying to do. When part of me used to say I couldn't transition because I would be an ugly woman or whatever other justification to tear me down, I realize now that was part of me trying to protect myself from the danger in expressing femininity or queerness that came from past dangers and traumas. But these "nightly negations" didn't seem to link to any particular trauma, so it just didn't make sense to me and I couldn't see what it was doing.

Then my therapist said, "Maybe she's trying to make sure you don't feel safe so that you stay on guard." And that stopped me in my mental tracks. It was a big "oh fuck" moment.

My negative self-talk doesn't happen when there is a crisis or I am actually in danger, it happens most when life quiets down and I am actually safe. But this part of me is stuck in a place of danger and is trying to make sure I don't stop being vigilant so we can stay safe from the threats lurking in trusting people or feeling secure in relationships.

...and now I am calling this part of myself Batman. 😅

Also, I realized over the last month of explaining my transition to cis people that it’s kind of weird we usually don’t usually mean orchiectomy or hysterectomy included in the term “bottom surgery.”

Like, it’s surgery down there….and testicles are on the bottom of the dang thing! Yet we use bottom surgery as a euphemism for vaginoplasty and metoidoplasty/phalloplasty almost exclusively, right?

Cause like, I don’t feel like I’ve had “the surgery” and if I tell people I had bottom surgery, they are going to expect a very different genital status. And I kind of like blowing cis people’s minds by being someone who everything they can see was thanks to hormones and genetics, busting some of the myths and assumptions they have about trans bodies, and the orchi just feels like the removal of hormone factories to an extent.

I don’t know…just some meandering thoughts I keep coming back around to that may not really mean anything. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Power. SA and DV is always about power. People often assume this means it’s about a person getting pleasure from domination and control of others. It can be, but it often isn’t even that. Frequently, it’s about the power in our systems that structures vulnerability to this violence.

Why are lgbtq+ youth more likely to experience SA and DV? Because predators and perpetrators know that the system will enable that violence and protect them. Why are the poor more likely to be victims of crime of all kinds? Because the structures of our society make it crystal clear that violence against the poor will be treated differently than violence against the rich, and we structure work, material goods, and more in a way that requires them to make themselves structurally vulnerable. Why do fascists want to make women more dependent upon men? Because that constructed dependency will enable their SA, DV, and other acts.

It’s also worth noting that many people who have been victims themselves will be perpetrators against others they have power over because power teaches us to be violent.

Huh, weird, I guess I never actually said it until what someone said prompted me today, but um, yeah, I’m a survivor of an abusive household, have had members of my family be both victims and perpetrators of DV, I have been sexually harassed in public in front of others and no one did anything, and there are other things that I will not share publicly because that’s my choice. And I have sat with more survivors on crisis hotlines than most people would believe.

In case it still needs to be said that we all know survivors and need to fucking put a stop to SA and DV. And that is done through community work and changing the structures of power that make people vulnerable to this violence. That is my professional opinion as someone with a bunch of related expertise too.

I am debating how I can make a living doing community work going forward. I’m burnt out on the typical nonprofit, and most of those doing lgbtq community organizing are being gutted and limited on so many fronts. And government jobs are also being cut left and right, from federal to local levels.

I am damn good at community organizing and service work, but how the hell do I pay rent with that? If I have to do something else with the majority of my spoons, then how could I muster the energy to do that during free time?

And mutual aid, while it is the mode I want to do more organizing under, seems unlikely to be able to meet my material needs in the next year or two.

So the only idea I’m kicking around now is maybe going back to doing some form of community consulting work. Maybe I can offer my services running workshops and helping people build the beginnings of their own mutual aid networks and groups? I could provide training in the skills people need, education on important concepts and frameworks, and such?

Either that, or find some magical way to make enough money writing or creating content of some sort. Which seems foolhardy. Ugh

One of the ways I know transphobes have never actually known a trans person in real life is that they think we make lots of demands on others, insist on taking up space, and don’t care about inconveniencing others. Like, anyone who has known or cared about a trans person knows it is like pulling teeth to get them to reach out or allow others in for support. But the way we encounter these things is shaped different. Let's be clear what this means: they have decided without legislation or formal immigration procedures to attempt to revoke the permanent residency based upon their speech. This is BAD.

Previously, people with student visas were threatened like this, which was easier to do because the executive branch and ICE have a lot of leeway with these forms of visas. They also depend on attending a specific school that if you are expelled from, you lose your status. But a green card is supposed to provide a person a permanent right to reside and work in the US, as well as entitles them to many of the same constitutional protections as US citizens. The right to free speech and the first amendment are not unique to citizens.

This is a first try to push past the laws and further consolidate power - if they succeed, they will go after others with green cards for the views they express in public and exercising their rights. I would not doubt that they would revoke the green cards of trans people or refugees if this sets a precedent.

I've been telling people California is not as secure for trans folks as some people think it is. And while people in other parts of the county have see the glowing press of Gov. Newsom and told me how good he seems, a lot of us here have known him for the principle-less opportunist he is.

He showed his ass the past few years when he pushed to criminalize being homeless even more, and "solve" the problem by throwing unhoused people in prison. I knew then he would gladly throw us under any bus if it served his ambition.

Asking for music recommendations: what’s a song that channels the feeling of building a home and choosing a settled life for you?

I use music to help me frame things in my life and motivate me a lot. And so much of my favorite music is either tied to how I used to live (adventuring through the world and seeking out new things constantly) or for fighting against fascism or about queer love. But my therapist brought up a good point: I moved back to the US to build a more settled life after spending half my life bouncing from country to country - I should reframe things as the efforts I’m putting in to put down roots and build a home and life for myself here.

I’m realizing I didn’t word this post the best because it’s reading to many like I’m asking how can we make non-confrontational people more confrontational or more able to fight directly with the stuff we’re facing. That’s definitely not what I was trying to ask for.

What I was thinking was this: bad anti-trans news hits or I’m feeling demotivated lately or have to go do something hard, I can access the strength and energy I need by putting myself in a fighting spirit. I think of how I get to fight shitheads and hate by doing what I do, or even just going outside as unapologetically myself. That sense of fighting back helps me.

But I know that’s not what everyone needs. Many people don’t cope with horror movies and punk rock, but want comfort shows, good vibes, and serenity or harmony in their life. And this shit we’re facing is making that hard.

So I’m thinking, how do I help those people find the strength, motivation, and resiliency they need in the face of this stuff? I know it looks different than what helps me, so I want to know how to do that better and generate new ideas

I've been chewing on this. For me, I have always had problems with authority figures and the idea of sticking it to the Man always gets me fired up. Going punk rock on something is exactly what I want to do. Talking back to authority is something I've done since I was in grade school!

But I know a lot of people don't like confrontation or want to follow instructions and do what they're told by nature or nurture. Some folks have trauma with speaking up. Friends, I have a favor to ask: please start doing something to help the trans community.

One of my mentors finally said it to me today: when you step back, you give someone else the opportunity to step up.

My dayjob allows me to do things that most folks never get a chance to do to help and make a difference. This is where I can do the most with what limited time and energy I have. But I still feel like I'm falling short, because there is so much work that needs doing right now to take care of each other or that allies can do to help out.

So please, if you are cis and care, get involved in the local groups that are organizing to push back and resist the attacks on trans and queer folks. Help organize a fundraiser for your local LGBTQ center. Get involved in local organizations like PFLAG or GLSEN where you can help push local school boards, city councils, and others to make a difference.

If you are trans, we all gotta step up to care for each other right now. I need others to step up and help with the emotional labor we give each other - reach out and make yourself actively available to talk to and support. Organize a local trans potluck and get folks talking about what you can do to make a difference. Have whatever queer friends you know over for a game night and start building up connections.

I know we are all struggling right now, but I am pushing myself too far and need to step back more. Please, take this opportunity and step up my friends. 💖

It's always funny when a toot like this breaks containment and reaches comfortable, middle-class, cishet white men. They assume I mean what they would mean by this - that we shouldn't do things that break unjust laws - and then jump into my replies to be like, don't comply in advance, what if they make an unjust law like making it illegal to say certain things are you just going to comply????

And I'm like...they literally have decreed it's illegal to talk about my existence as a trans woman in federal government documents, and I am out here still being trans and talking about it. You realize I'm already way past that point you think you're being brave about, right?

And all of this to say that they fail to realize that the meaning of the above isn't "be afraid and don't do things" but me talking to fellow anti-fascists saying "don't upload proof of things that could land you in jail in a publicly accessible place while resisting the rise of fascism."
