This Pilatus PC-12 turboprop N21AU landing at Portland #KPDX would probably go mostly unnoticed... except for its radio callsign Boeing 21AU. This is a crew transport coming to pick up the test pilots from Boeing 508. It will take them back to Boeing Field #KBFI in Seattle where the flight test base is located. In order to be "approved for flight into known icing" the Boeing test pilots have to hunt for known icing🥶❄ conditions and fly in it for hours. They flew from a flight test base in Moses Lake WA #KMWH to Minnesota last Tuesday, and returned to MWH. That wasn't an oops, at least not on the part of the crew. The left engine was found on the ground of the airfield where it tore off during takeoff. NTSB is investigating. But there appear to be parallels to the 1979 crash of American 191 in Chicago, where an engine broke away from a DC-10 due to a missing bolt on the pylon. Checklists and inspections seemed to prevent that from happening again, unless it happened again with this one.

It looks like this one will go to Enter Air, a charter airline of Poland. (ADS-B showed Polish registration.) Interestingly, Wikipedia doesn't show any current MAX8 orders for them. I've been concerned hearing people call #USpol ICE deportation flights "ICE Air". It's probably unavoidable people will call it by that nickname. However, the international callsign "IceAir" is and has been IcelandAir, for decades. So if you hear an #IceAir callsign on the radio, scanner or LiveATC, it's IcelandAir doing a normal scheduled passenger flight to or from Reykjavik. You probably had heard of the RAT (Ram Air Turbine for other readers) but may not have remembered. The well-known cases of Air Canada 143 (Boeing 767, "Gimli Glider", 1983) & Air Transat 236 (Airbus A330, "Azores Glider", 2001) each maintained electrical & hydraulic power by deployment of their RATs after fuel exhaustion. In both those cases, Canadian pilots heroically glided from the flight levels to a safe landing on a runway. Both planes were repaired and returned to service.

No, it was absolutely not gliding in. The test pilots can force deployment of the RAT to test that it works. And that was obviously what they were doing.
Even when training in small aircraft, we have a rule not to create a real emergency when practicing for preparedness. I had heard reports of planespotters in Everett pointing out that a brand new plane returned with the RAT deployed. But this is the first time I've seen it for myself.

Sounds similar to thunderstorms that confronted a friend and me at Crater Lake the beginning of the month. Each of us saw multiple cloud-to-lake lighting strikes. We sheltered in the Rim Village visitor center. We got some pictures during lulls in the storms. We could see on the radar that new storms kept forming right there as the winds climbed up over the mountains. So we gave up on planned hikes. Taking a merger's name from an acquired company is valid under rights of ownership. US airlines had several high profile examples. AmericaWest Airlines acquired US Airways out of bankruptcy and took the bigger-sounding name (yet kept the on-air callsign Cactus). They did it again when they acquired American Airlines out of bankruptcy and kept AA's name & callsign. Also when Continental acquired United Airlines out of bankruptcy, they took UA's name but retained Continental's globe logo.

A new Boeing 737 MAX8 departed from the Boeing paint hangar at Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX today. The customer is SCAT Airlines of Kazakhstan, which we wouldn't normally see at PDX. I think this is the same one I posted pics + video arriving unpainted on May 31. At this point the plane is still owned by Boeing. 30 minutes after the green MAX9 arrival, there was a bonus #avgeek sighting. I got cell phone video of a Cathay Pacific Cargo Boeing 747-8F landing on Runway 10R. In those 30 minutes, winds turned around the runway directions and I didn't have time to bicycle around to the other side of the airport. In the background are trusses of the I-5 Interstate Bridge between Portland OR and Vancouver WA, and to the right of it are high-rise buildings in downtown Vancouver WA. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

Airliners last long enough they shouldn't be named "new" or "next". Airbus wasn't alone in such a mistake. The 3rd generation Boeing 737 was called the "Next Generation" to sound like a Star Trek series current at the time of its design. 737NGs were built from 1996-2020 (civilian models) and still fly. But there's nothing "next" about them now. The following generation "MAX" has managed to destroy the 737's reputation to the point there won't be another "next". #aviation #avgeek #travel

Sometimes a perceptive #avgeek can tell which airline an unpainted new plane will be going to. The rudder gets installed already with final paint because the paint hangar can't get inside the mechanism with out disassembling it, which they don't want to do. Unless it's a special livery, this looks to me like it's going to Singapore Airlines.

I bicycled to Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX for a closer view of this unpainted Boeing 737 MAX8. Coming from Renton WA #KRNT where the 737 final assembly line is, I suspect this was the very first flight of this aircraft, known as the "B1" flight since it's the first flight done by Boeing test pilots. (A later pre-delivery flight with customer test pilots is called the "C1" flight.) Boeing has a paint hangar in Portland so some new planes fly here on B1 to get painted. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

During my trip to Australia, I switched my devices and apps to show metric units (Celsius, km, etc). Get the whole experience, right? I don't mind since I can convert most common imperial⇔metric units in my head anyway. That's except for temperature since °F & °C don't have the same zero - I often use a converter app for that. I had my first flights on an A380 outbound and 787 on the return trip, both of which can mostly only be found on the longest international flights such as this. Still, keeping people guessing about a small number of lakes and arrival times makes it not worthwhile for large crowds to show up and get in the way of the preparations for land transport. I'm safe at home in #Portland #Oregon. So I can declare the trip to #Australia a complete success. I had a wonderful time and saw so much more than my previous visit. The hot weather was expected since it's summer there. I got to fly for the first time on an A380 outbound and 787 on the return. I spy a red-tailed roo. Well, there are lots of these here. But this one will be my ride home. This is my first time flying on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This is a 787-9 model. Though I have been aboard static display 787-8 test planes in Seattle & Oshkosh which had ballast tanks instead of seats, and "experimental" painted over the doors. #MEL #YMML #aviation #travel #avgeek
