I met another MAP for the first time today who I had met online. I used to be a bit stressed about these meetings but now it's becoming just a very nice way to meet someone and talk about a lot of different things without having to worry about what I can or cannot say. We even talked a bit about perhaps organizing a meetup with a larger group of MAPs sometime in the new year. Never believe that you're alone out there!

That's a somewhat non-standard interpretation. The term is more typically used for people before they start puberty, so until ages 10-12 or so. I don't think there should really be a strictly defined boundary, though of course the term should not be used to infantilize or take away any rights.

Of course they are still homophobic. But one can be homophobic and also be the target of homophobia at the same time. Homophobic gay people don't deserve to be discriminated. The same goes for self-hating or bigoted MAPs (or whatever term you want to use for them).

I'm not saying to ignore them, I'm saying stop doing things that we know will not work. If you want to call me an apologist for saying that also bigoted people still deserve to be treated as human beings, then be my guest, I guess.

I don't think being hostile to bigots is inherently good or bad, it all depends on what the consequences of that hostility are. Are you actually changing their minds? Are you protecting other people from their bigotry? Then great, go ahead by all means. But please do also consider the negative effects of this hostility if you do it in public, including the effects on non-bigoted people who are just looking for a space where it is safe to be who they are.

I don't have much energy left for this conversation and I don't have the feeling that either of us is going to convince the other, so I will stop replying to it beyond this post (but feel free to have a final word if you need to).

the difference between bigoted anti-cs and antis is that the former are MAPs and the real antis will not hesitate to group them with all the rest of us when they get the chance. When I say I want basic rights for MAPs, I mean *all* MAPs, including the ones who don't think the rest of us deserve those rights.

I would love to live in a world where everyone was as open to being challenged on their beliefs as you say they should be. I really would. But the reality is that the vast majority are not open to being challenged, and trying to do so anything is just an exercise in futility. Meanwhile, this calling-out is creating an atmosphere of hostility that is palpable for all the rest of us who you are not calling out. Speaking words is an action, and actions have consequences. So yes, there are absolutely good reasons for not calling out people even though they are 100% wrong.

While I agree that there exist some extreme anti-c people who behave basically like antis in many ways, I don't think that's the majority. Even the ones who are too extreme anti-c in my opinion are just like that because of their past experiences, and they won't change by you getting mad at them or pointing out how wrong they are.

But regardless of which one of us is correct on that, my main point is that it should be possible to exist in online MAP spaces and work together on shared goals towards proper MAP rights *without* getting sucked into debates about contact stances. All of us MAPs - even the bigoted ones - deserve at least that small measure of safety from the relentless hate we get from society.

I imagine that gay people also had (and continue to have) a need to build community and friendships without the constant need to talk about homophobia and how to address it. In fact if your gay community is talking about nothing but homophobia all the time then you're likely excluding a lot of people who are triggered by that topic (just think of reasons why a gay person might be triggered by that) or just don't want other conversations to get overshadowed by it all the time. This is how I feel about much of the contact discourse here on pedi. The fact that it's an important topic to discuss doesn't mean people should be bombarded by it all the time.
