I think I will switch to ecosia as a search engine soon, as I learned today that they started to use their new self-hosted search index. I did a simple test and got soo much better results than any other search engine already.

https://www.heise.de/en/news/Ecosia-and-Qwant-launch-web-search-via-European-index-10513567.html

I want to create a space in #GNOME for exchanging information and ideas about organizing workshops and other events, and onboarding new contributors to such activities.
Here are past events that could be scaled up to other regions around the world, and that could serve as a starting point to develop more ideas:
https://pesader.dev/posts/1st-contribution-hackathon/ by Pedro Sader Azevedo (npub1hgt…jkzq)
https://discourse.gnome.org/t/empowering-students-with-open-source-literacy-a-session-by-gnome-nepal/26671
Who would be interested? I would love to have more of these activities, and I think they are really important for the project!

      anyone remembers this from 2020?

https://hpjansson.org/blag/2020/12/16/on-the-graying-of-gnome/

> A diminishing number of veterans is doing an increasing share of the work
> Although recruitment is stable, newcomers don't seem to be their stride in terms of commit counts

My observations tell me it actually got worse since then. The struggle newcomers face in #GNOME is enormous. People get scared away or burned out extremely fast and often. I already watched a few this year, sadly efforts to support them to stay don't often succeed

#OpenSource Desktops, for example #GNOME, need to do #innovation (again?)! What was the last thing from GNOME that was truly innovative and had a significant impact (also outside open source)?

We are just running behind the big corporations and their ideas. Having new ideas is not hard. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money to implement them. It mostly just needs the will to experiment and try out new things.

But also for that we need quick processes to get such ideas finished and released.

To anyone who uses assistive technologies like screen readers and does programming:
How do you perceive different programming languages? Are some easier to use than others, more comfortable to read than others? And what about the major ones? Also interesting: what about the terminal and commands and their output there?

I am asking because I believe not just GUIs should be designed with accessibility in mind, but everything else too. So what could be improved?

#accessibility #Linux #programming
