Yeah, it's still a compromise we need to take to be able to interact with traditional finance (cards, IBANs). We hope for the endgame of native Bitcoin payments sooner, but currently it's a bit of a chicken & egg problem with merchants - not enough users asking to pay, so not enough merchants accept it, and vice versa.

So we're trying to piggyback on the existing incumbent rails to at least be able to employ sound money in self-custody today. If you use something like our NWC enabled debit card that pulls sats automatically via Lightning, then your actual Bitcoin stack is still very much private.

Obviously, wherever you can pay directly in BTC - do that (and also orangepill new merchants, too). But until Bitcoin network adoption flips fiat, we need to create more reasons for general masses to already try and use Bitcoin as money today.

Then, perhaps there will be more of them asking merchants to accept Bitcoin directly.

It's like selling BTC into your bank account and then using that EUR balance with your traditional debit card.

It's great that you managed to create such a bubble around yourself, where a few basic merchants are enough for your lifestyle. However, it's naive to think that you will get the early majority to live on the Bitcoin standard like this. It's already hard for them to digest the volatility, let alone the lifestyle changes required to be able to pay only in BTC directly.

Most people:
- shop groceries in supermarkets that take EUR
- need to pay for flight tickets/trains/public transport in EUR
- need to pay their landlord in EUR
- subscribe to services online with EUR
- pay taxes in EUR

All of that can be done either by holding discretionary EUR balance, or by holding zero EUR and selling at the last possible second via wavespace. Even most avid Bitcoin evangelists end up holding EUR balances they are not proud. We solve for that, and with self-custody at the front.

You just refuse to make even one step down from your moral high-ground, posing your highly sacrificial lifestyle as the only way for masses. Which just further distances ordinary people, and actually slows down the adoption.

I'm quite sure most Bitcoiners end up holding EUR balances that they are not proud of. We solve for that.

From user’s perspective, he is spending BTC from his self-custodial Lightning node connected to wavecard via Nostr Wallet Connect. Yes, Bitcoin is sold to fund the purchase, but ONLY because the receiver is not taking Bitcoin. It’s basically selling Bitcoin on behalf of the merchant. If 99%+ of society takes fiat today, how are you supposed to pay for groceries, pay rent, buy tickets?

Our users sell Bitcoin not because they want to, but because they don’t have anything else. If you have cash around, you’re essentially shorting Bitcoin. But if you’re all-in BTC, then you have to sell it to live. It doesn’t matter if you sell it to non-KYC gift cards, or you automate it via wavecard, you’re still selling. We’re not trying to deplete people’s stacks. Actually, they stack even their disposable fiat income into BTC, because they are confident that they can spend BTC instantly, and not worry about not being able to pay one way or another.

Let’s be realistic here - our product is not for those Bitcoiners that already went underground. This won’t make them KYC, like it won’t make you KYC. We’re not competing with whatever setup you have to pay for your life. We’re competing with other debit cards that are all KYC’ed regardless, like Revolut. Except, at least we can offer a Bitcoin-only debit card that spends from self-custody and doesn’t require you to hold shitcoins (fiat included).

If you’re already using debit cards, ours is the best option today. The first step to living on real money in self-custody.

That's true. We're solving this friction from the user side, not the merchant side. Our tools are for someone who wants to live on Bitcoin, yet has to pay in fiat in 99% of the cases.

However, the idea is that if more people would move onto the Bitcoin standard because of convenient tools like wavecard, then more people would also try to "orange pill" the merchants to accept Bitcoin natively, as it's obviously even more cheaper, more private, less intermediaries, etc.

It's a bit of catch-22 problem between merchants and shoppers. But our thesis is that it's very unlikely that the adoption will come from merchants first, and then onto people. It has to be from people who get in the habit of paying with Bitcoin one way or another and then merchants will eventually flip.

Unfortunately, non-KYC cards are much more limited. Not accepted ...

Unfortunately, non-KYC cards are much more limited. Not accepted by as many merchants, not possible to add on mobile wallets, no physical cards as well. And sometimes non-KYC simply means that they won’t ask for details proactively, but they might freeze your balance and still ask for KYC if they don’t like your transactions.

For the record, we identified the issue to be related to our IP checker provider being on end-user's specific DNS blacklist. We're using a third-party IP checker to serve a simple EU disclaimer. Removing that IP checker from the user's blacklist helped resolve the issue. We will check if there's a way to get rid of this third-party reliance all together.

The real question is when is this endgame gonna arrive? I think we simply have different assumptions of the fastest path to reach it.

It’s not enough to just build native stuff and expect the humanity to choose a dramatically smaller payment network. There’s a huge chasm between the early adopters of Bitcoin and the rest of the humanity. You’re expecting the “stupid” people, as you call it, to suddenly do a 180 on their habits, go fully non-KYC, drop their usual payment methods and live your way. It hasn’t happened and it’s naive to expect that people will choose sacrifice over convenience. This disconnect is actually holding us back. Your way is to be very strict, demanding and educational. Being one person, you have converted tons of people, relatively, but these are early adopters on the long-tail of the distribution.

Instead, we come to the majority’s KYC’ed yard, and try to offer the first stepping stone. Something that would at least tick some good boxes: being able to own only good money, put it in self-custody, without changing their habits. That will create a lot more zero-fiat Bitcoiners who will still demand merchants to allow them to pay in Bitcoin directly. Then, we will have a real chance to flip the fiat tables sooner.

And lastly, our roadmap does eventually include a native non-KYC Bitcoin payment wallet, so all those debit card users will be able to easily graduate into native payments when there are merchants that take Bitcoin.

We’re not competing with native Bitcoin payments. Wherever Bitcoin is accepted directly, you should always pay with no intermediaries. And all Bitcoiners still have the duty of persistently orange-pilling merchants, regardless of the payment method used today. You should always ask for paying with Bitcoin.

The argument that “if you go to merchant with a VISA card, that merchant will never adopt Bitcoin” is not accurate, because they already get 99% of all payments in fiat. This is a catch-22 situation for Bitcoin acceptance, whereas fiat has the network effect of being accepted 10/10 times.

Our assumption is that we can only really compete in a timely manner with the fiat system by piggybacking on its existing rails, and at least creating more reasons for people to own ALL of their capital in Bitcoin TODAY, where 99%+ of merchants still do not accept Bitcoin.

There’s a huge gap between early Bitcoin adopters and the rest of the humanity who still sees it as an investment. Most people are scared of Bitcoin, don’t know what can they even do with it beyond allocating a percentage of their “investment portfolio”.

The early majority, who are not tinkerers and early adopters like yourself, are looking at this more pragmatically, and will only switch their capital to real money, including even disposable income, if they are confident that they can fund their lifestyle today. These are not the people who will shape their lifestyle on gift cards, cash and 2 random shops that are accepting BTC directly. Meanwhile, the time is ticking, and Bitcoin is being gobbled up by existing centralised power players. Most people are still gonna ignore it until the government endorses it or enforces it.

We want more people to hold zero fiat today. If that means that you sell BTC at the last possible second, because your big name grocery shop only takes fiat, that is a fair deal, imo.

We have something similar on the roadmap as well. The wavecard already allows you to spend Bitcoin anywhere globally, by selling it at the last possible second and funding the fist payment for a merchant.

You can either connect your LN wallet to spend from self-custody (via NWC) or store BTC on the wavecard custodially.

Technically, the custodial BTC balance could be collateralized for a loan that is also then folded back into the same BTC on the card, essentially working like a “boosted” Bitcoin position that is partly spendable without capital gains.

We’re on the same mission to not hold any fiat whatsoever, and to automate all liquidations into fiat at the recipient level, so that you, as a Bitcoiner, wouldn’t ever need to even care about any fiat balances.

"I'm never selling my Bitcoin!" is a phrase I often hear coming from self-proclaimed Bitcoin maxis. At face value, this appears to be a perfectly justifiable statement - a guy has discovered Bitcoin, sees it as a superior "investment" with phenomenal upside potential, and has declared that he will be "diamond-handing" his Bitcoin. The problem is that - unbeknownst to himself - he is still shorting Bitcoin. Why?

I'm not talking about any investment strategies or portfolio diversifications. That's already way beyond the point. To put it simply, we all have recurring expenditures (rent, food, etc.), and if this guy is "never selling" Bitcoin to pay for his life, then he must own paper monopoly money (aka fiat shitcoins) to pay for everything, which means that he is still holding some fiat, thus, effectively shorting Bitcoin.

"Come on, it's not such a big deal if I still hold a few thousand Euros for convenience," I hear you say. While this might seem like a minor issue, in this article, I will explore:

The difference between Bitcoin being seen as an untouchable "investment" versus being used as actual money.

How does that introduce a tangible purpose for Bitcoin and change the wider perspective in the society.

Why is that a timely issue in the world where centralised suits are gobbling up more and more Bitcoin to stay in power.

The only way to freedom is to go ALL-IN

There's a reason I described Bitcoin as being seen as an "investment" with parentheses. Investment implies some kind of return in the future based on a common denominator. Calling Bitcoin an investment is still rooted in fiat thinking of buying Bitcoin at one fiat price and selling it later at a higher fiat price, thus making a fiat return.

However, Bitcoin itself is not really an investment; it's money. Bitcoin will become that common denominator that you will eventually invest in other ventures, and against which the return will be calculated. This is not yet obvious for many, but for some it's already perceived as an inevitable future.

Those who seek freedom and recognise Bitcoin as perfect money want to save their capital exclusively in Bitcoin, including even their disposable income. Not only does this make rational sense in terms of increasing purchasing power (even on a monthly basis), but also more generally, why would you park your capital in anything that can be either inflated or confiscated away, especially when you have a solution on the table that is mathematically scarce and immutable?

Ultimately, it's a principal choice of opting out of the flawed system - taking a stance on running your life based on a secure, stable, and censorship-resistant base layer, which gives you freedom of movement, freedom of speech, simplifies your capital protection, and rewires your mindset to prioritise low-time preference.

Meanwhile, suits are gobbling up Bitcoin before your auntie

Hyperbitcoinization is a very timely societal issue, specifically in terms of Bitcoin distribution among ordinary people before governments and corporates gobble it up for their reserves. Even though Bitcoin is, perhaps, the first opportunity that people had a chance to act on before suits, this window is closing down, as Bitcoin is already being eaten en masse by huge centralised entities in power.

Thus, we have a situation where Bitcoin is still, unfortunately, ignored by the wider public due to stigmas, negative connotations, misrepresentation of Bitcoin as an investment, or simply due to a lack of education. Meanwhile, over 17% of the Bitcoin supply is already in the hands of current power players that seek to retain that power in the new paradigm of Bitcoin, too.

On the other side, we have early Bitcoin adopters laying the foundation for P2P Bitcoin payments, but until a good portion of merchants adopt it, the "pragmatic" majority will continue ignoring Bitcoin as money, because it's not useful enough for payments. At best, some will buy it because "number go up". And that just continues perpetuating the false narrative of Bitcoin being an "investment", while the actual chasm of the full adoption curve between early adopters and early majority will remain uncrossed. The worst case scenario is that the vast majority of society will continue letting the governments erode their capital away, and will only truly consider Bitcoin when it will overcome gold.

However, there is a way to already make Bitcoin useful for that early majority and connect it with their lifestyle in this transitional period today.

How should I live on Bitcoin, if only % of merchants accept it?

While most Bitcoiners agree that we want to see circular economies where Bitcoin is exchanged natively and directly, the reality today is that 99%+ of merchants do not accept Bitcoin.

It's a Catch-22 dilemma: not enough merchants take Bitcoin, so people don't see Bitcoin as a means of exchange. And merchants don't accept it, at least partly because there are not enough people demanding to pay with it. On top of that, the network effect of the incumbent fiat payment rails is so deeply ingrained in the fabric of our society that it's nearly impossible to replace it.

So, what can you do if you don't want to short Bitcoin in today's world that operates in paper monopoly money?

Prioritise P2P Bitcoin payments wherever you can, but if your local coffee shop only takes card payments and your landlord Chadwick demands a wire transfer for rent, you will have to find a way to pay them in fiat.

Therefore, in order to live on Bitcoin in this transitional period before the Bitcoin standard, you need to find a way to liquidate your Bitcoin instantly at the last possible moment.

The main idea for our Bitcoin card is that you would be able to hold BTC until the last possible second, and also with self-custody in mind (powered by NWC). Indeed, if you still have fiat, I’d say the rational priority is to spend that over “hard” money. But for those that want to already live on Bitcoin, and allocate their disposable income (which is still on average a rational choice even if you spend it the same month) such solution as wavecard solves the instant liquidation peoblem in all of those cases where merchants do not accept BTC directly.

Answers to your questions:
1. Conversion fees refer to BTC -> EUR conversion when paying with the card - that’s 1% for us in revenue. On top of that, the BTC price itself might be up to 0.5% worse than you would get on other exchanges as a mid-market rate. This is the same price we get from our liquidity providers, and we just pass it on at cost. Besides that, there are no other fees, and we do not charge any FX fees. Meaning that you fan freely pay in any fiat currency globally, and will still end up losing max 1.5% from your BTC in self-custody to a burger in your hands.

2. We can accept EEA citizens OR residents. If you apply as a citizen, then you only need an ID and selfie. If you do not have EEA citizenship, then EEA proof of address is accepted instead.

3. Third-party IBAN transfers are not allowed yet, but we’re working on it.

4. Yes, you can easily freeze your card, add limits or control contactless payments specifically. Like a normal VISA card
