Privacy fatigue is real.

On mobile, GrapheneOS is the only option that would be an upgrade from iOS.

On desktop, going from Mac to Linux is a tough call. You'll get substantially worse security, but better privacy from big tech.

Your hands will thank you.

(Same grip should be used for deadlifting.)

It is likely to annoy both atheists and Christians (in particular, but not exclusively).

Before they've been seduced by the salaries and perks big tech can offer. Before they're on the hedonic treadmill. Before they have mortgages and families and responsibilities.

Pay them, but don't pretend you can compete with big tech. Any attempt to do that is likely to attract people for the wrong reasons.

Instead, offer them interesting things to work on. Offer to teach them on the job. Offer them the opportunity to work with people they can learn from and respect.

The great rotation.

The thing you have to understand is that this chart is completely unpalatable to the powers that be. They want companies, etfs and governments to be the majority shareholders. It is not acceptable that individuals continue to hold so much coin. Treat these email services for what they are: Alternatives to Gmail or Outlook with a security perspective and automated encryption features.

Yes, people on social media can't read, but IMO they should approach their service in a different way ("A reasonably secure email provider" is my suggestion) If they don't want people ratioing them all the time... Most of these people getting the wrong answer is because their site can be pretty ambiguous about the technical details without searching a few pages deep for it. Posteo is an email provider that does openly clarify they can be compelled to intercept incoming emails in a better way than how Proton says it.

Still doesn't mean these services are a bad thing though.

nevent1q…ltja

Before they've been seduced by the salaries and perks big tech can offer. Before they're on the hedonic treadmill. Before they have mortgages and families and responsibilities.

Pay them, but don't pretend you can compete with big tech. Any attempt to do that is likely to attract people for the wrong reasons.

Instead, offer them interesting things to work on. Offer to teach them on the job. Offer them the opportunity to work with people they can learn from and respect.

For the positive presentation of my position, see my previous post HODLing is low time preference.

Here I will focus on responding to specific points raised by Max, primarily his reductio ad absurdam, since he says that was the strongest argument from his original post.

I'll also comment on a few other points.

The Reductio

In Max's words:

[...]if everyone hoards everything, no one lends at any price. Interest rates go to infinity; capital becomes unavailable. And infinite interest rates reflect infinite time preference by the standard Austrian framework.

So...

If everyone hoards, there is no lending, regardless of the interest rate offered by potential borrowers

This implies that the effective rate of interest is infinite

Infinite interest rates reflect infinite time preference

The Mistake

...is in step 3.

In steps 1 & 2, Max is talking about observed, or market interest rates.

In step 3, he is talking about a pure or originary interest rate, which would indeed reflect time preference.

But they are not the same thing. Pure interest rates cannot be observed, because in the real world, interest rates always include an entrepreneurial component. It is not possible to isolate the effect of time preference from the effect of entrepreneurial profit/loss in market interest rates.

The Evenly Rotating Economy

To isolate the effect of time preference, Austrians use an imaginary construction called the Evenly Rotating Economy (ERE).

In the ERE, market interest rates are a pure expression of time preference. No one would hold cash balances; all funds not wanted for immediate consumption would be invested. The reason is not because everyone would have extremely low time preference, but because in the ERE, there is no uncertainty (the definition of the ERE).

A few other points

Max says:

If the hoarder's choice reflects risk tolerance, then you've conceded that hoarding doesn't demonstrate time preference at all.

I don't concede any such thing.

The choice between hoarding and investing does not demonstrate time preference. It reflects risk tolerance (technically it reflects all forms of uncertainty, not only risk tolerance).

Hoarding does demonstrate time preference in the choice between consuming (spending) and hoarding.

Also:

The original article's claim was that hoarders consume the price of uncertainty avoidance. Your postscript agrees.

I don't agree, and I don't see how my postscript can be read as agreeing.

I deliberately avoided addressing that because it seemed like it would be a huge distraction from the main point of my first article. I'll try to explain my view briefly.

The price of uncertainty avoidance that Max refers to is the forgone interest that could have been had by investing. That is certainly an opportunity cost of hoarding.

But an opportunity cost it isn't consumption. Consumption is enjoying the satisfaction provided by a good. You are very much not enjoying the benefit of the forgone interest.

We all know the difference intuitively. Consumption is a source of pleasure (a prior, at least); costs are painful.

I can also provide a reductio: if you want to say opportunity costs are a form of consumption, then you can't just limit that to forgone interest. You would have to say the hoarder is consuming every other good in the world that he could have had if he chose not to hoard!

Why it matters

Max says:

You seem to treat time preference as any choice involving present versus future.

Yes! In fact, I will go further: all action involves substituting a future state for a present state. Therefore, all action involves time preference.

My article uses a narrower definition: time preference is revealed through the exchange of present goods for future goods at an interest rate.

But this isn't only about definitions, because Max also says this:

The HODLer who refuses to lend at any rate isn't demonstrating patience. They're demonstrating that present possession matters more to them than any offered future return. Whether you call that high time preference or something else, it doesn't look like the civilizational virtue the Bitcoin community claims.

If Max was saying, "HODLing is good, it just doesn't demonstrate time preference," that would be purely a question of definitions. I would pack up my keyboard and call it a day.

Unfortunately, Max is using the claim that HODLing doesn't demonstrate time preference to construe it as a vice.

Does the business realize they are accepting bitcoin? I'm not a big fan of doing the bitcoin to fiat conversion on your end (gift cards, bill pay services, etc.) where the seller doesn't even realize bitcoin was involved. That doesn't encourage adoption.

3. If yes to #2, spend bitcoin. Don't worry about whether the seller is holding it or immediately converting to fiat. That is their choice. The important thing is that they made a choice to accept it.

4. If no to #2, spend fiat.

I'm still on the side of Mises, but apparently reasonable Austrians can disagree. However...

"The hoarder isn't postponing consumption..."

Hoarding a good does provide present utility, but that is not the same as consuming it. A non-perishable good like money is not used up, or worn out, or otherwise diminished in utility when it is held. The hoarder retains the full (present and future) services of the good until it is *actually* consumed or exchanged.

Rothbard recognized that too, as you mentioned above when he refers to 3 margins, not 2; and you yourself refer to hoarding as orthogonal, which would not be the case if hoarding and consumption were identical.

"A purely psychological "orientation toward the future" that never manifests in willingness to lend isn't economically meaningful because it produces no observable market phenomena."

Hoarding is not purely psychological. Hoarding in an exchange economy reduces demand for all other goods and increases the exchange value of the hoarded good. It definitely has effects in the market. This was the point of the 2nd Mises quote in my original reply. Whether those effects are observable is not relevant to economic theory.

"The HODLer who won't lend at any rate has revealed infinite time preference in the only sense that matters economically: no offered future return compensates him for parting with present capital."

The interest rate here is undefined, not infinite. You can't infer from a refusal to exchange present for future goods that the reason was an insufficient interest rate. Observed interest rates are partially explained by time preference, but they are not identical with it, nor do they measure it. There is always an entrepreneurial component.

It's the "stay humble" part of "stay humble and stack sats."

They provide all the same present utility prior to consumption. Are they now an investment rather than a hoard? What's the difference?

There is no obvious distinction between saving and investment in an autarchic economy. There is always time preference though.

(I think you will find that there is no difference.)

"...whether it reveals time preference through the mechanism of originary interest. Mises himself defines originary interest as the discount of future goods against present goods in exchange, which hoarding by definition does not involve since no temporal exchange occurs"

But Mises does not say that originary interest is the ONLY way time preference is expressed. My first quote from HA very clearly says the opposite, in fact.

Second for the case of capitalist saving in which the choice is to be made between the immediate consumption of a quantity of goods and the later consumption either of a greater quantity or of goods which are fit to provide a satisfaction which--except for the difference in time--is valued more highly."

--> Both plain savings (i.e., hoarding) and investment are expressions of time preference.

On the productivity of plain savings:

"If an individual employs a sum of money not for consumption but for the purchase of factors of production, saving is directly turned into capital accumulation. If the individual saver employs his additional savings for increasing his cash holding because this is in his eyes the most advantageous mode of using them, he brings about a tendency toward a fall in commodity prices and a rise in the monetary unit’s purchasing power....The effect of our [p. 522] saver’s saving, i.e., the surplus of goods produced over goods consumed, does not disappear on account of his hoarding. The prices of capital goods do not rise to the height they would have attained in the absence of such hoarding. But the fact that more capital goods are available is not affected by the striving of a number of people to increase their cash holdings. If nobody employs the goods--the nonconsumption of which brought about the additional saving--for an expansion of his consumptive spending, they remain as an increment in the amount of capital goods available, whatever their prices may be. Those two processes--increased cash holding of some people and increased capital accumulation--take place side by side."

That is the definition of saving. Saving is not consumption.

Also, interest rate is not time preference. Time preference is part of human nature. It does not require a loan market or an interest rate or money or society.

That Crusoe is not in a loan market is precisely the point. You say (correctly) that Crusoe is demonstrating low time preference by saving. But then you introduce money and loan markets and interest rates and get confused.

This is possible with any ISP.
