I agree *to an extent,* but I am one who very much believes that all literature is worthy of analysis and examination, and *not just* for a "look at how awful this aspect of our culture is" perspective.

I think it's a mistake to take a work of literature and say "this needs to be relegated to the dustbin of history" as if its problematic elements make it completely unfit for consumption, because the truth is that doing that really paves the way to purity-testing literature and having to make sure everything we read/watch/hear is squeaky-clean and unproblematic. There is *value* in Harry Potter beyond merely examining its problems. The most problematic literature you can think of is not monolithic in its awfulness.

None of that is me sticking up for JKR or for people who still play into the hype of it! Fuck JKR and fuck anyone who still can't detach themselves from Harry Potter. But for me, that has nothing to do with the literature itself and everything to do with the fact that contributing to that hype (even if not with money!) directly contributes to the material harm that the author is doing. It's inarguable that Harry Potter is a historically significant work of literature, but the problem is that its history isn't finished being written yet.

Oh, 100%. What I'm saying is that "she got many young people interested in reading" is what her legacy *could have been,* and she wasted it. Literary themes aside, I see that as a tragedy.

It's also funny you should mention *Birth of a Nation* because the truth is that in spite of the harmful myths that that film engenders, it remains (adjusted for inflation) one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and it is preserved in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." We may not "need" to remember it, but people certainly do.

The truth of the matter is that, shall we say, "problematic literature" will always have its place in the literary world, whether its intentionally problematic or whether it's problematic by virtue of being a product of its time. I don't think people should be buying Harry Potter stuff, but I would fight anyone who tries to take it off the shelf of a library. I wouldn't want to watch *Birth of a Nation,* but I would fight anyone who tries to remove it from the National Film Registry.

We can't wrestle with the bad parts of our culture if we shy away from them and try to hide them - but neither should they be given a place of honor. I think that's a nuance that a lot of people don't understand.

What's frustrating is that setting aside the problems with the narrative, JKR *could have* had an amazing legacy because those books got an entire generation of kids *interested in reading* in a way that few other literary works have managed. And she torched *all* of that to the ground to persecute people who aren't hurting anyone. It makes me angry, but it also makes me deeply sad as a literature teacher.

Hell, if it meant I could use Linux effectively and keep being able to use Clip Studio, I would probably be willing to pay for the subscription. It's less than $30 a year, and since they already come out with a new version every 8 months or so, the perpetual license doesn't even really save you all that much money (at least if you want the most up-to-date stuff - which I usually do, since they genuinely pack every new version with crazy QOL updates that we didn't even know we needed).

The QoL updates in version 5 are *definitely* worth the cost of the upgrade once you can afford it. It's better at backing up unsaved work, and it now has the shape/line post-correction like Procreate has always had. Lots of other things too that just make things a lot more streamlined (though I really wish they would bring in the option to use Simple View on PC - right now that's a mobile-only feature).

Even my Windows doesn't nag me about Copilot or Edge lol ...

Now that I've gotten my iPad Pro working again, I have a decent "portable art station," so I don't really need my laptop for that purpose anymore. I might explore putting Linux Mint on that laptop so that I can explore it a bit without needing virtualization. What I will say re. the CSP subscription is that it can be worth it - it's not super expensive (like $25-30 a year unless you need the EX version, which most people don't), and given the fact that they're basically releasing a new version every year anyway (it feels like we got v.4 less than 8 months ago and now we're already getting v.5), it almost works out cheaper to just get the subscription at this point (assuming you want to stay on the latest version, which I guess some people don't care about).

Clip Studio is kind of the launcher/hub. Clip Studio Paint is the actual art software. Weirdly, I had no trouble getting Clip Studio (the hub) to work in Linux - the part that kept crashing was Clip Studio Paint (the art software). The problem with installing Clip Studio 4 and updating it is that you end up paying a lot more that way because you have to buy the license twice. The v.4 + v.5 upgrade is cheaper than buying v.4 + v.5 outright, but it's still considerably more expensive than just buying v.5.

I think the reason it's built in with Edge browser windows is because they only really expect Microsoft users to use it. On iOS, for instance, when you search for assets on the hub, it doesn't load the web pages in-app - it opens a browser (Safari in this case) separately and has you complete the operation through that (since everything in Clip Studio is mostly tied to your account and not your device).

That's the nice thing - you can get Windows stuff to run on Linux; you just have to do it through virtualization and/or compatibility layers (which, to at least some degree - especially with virtualization - insulates you from the random .exe that you decided to download).

My way of encouraging people to try Linux isn't saying "it's like Windows" (it's not like Windows - that's basically its best quality). What I tend to say more often is stuff like "it's not any harder to learn than Windows" or "it's an operating system like any other" or something like that.

A lot of people *think* that the non-Windows UX is going to be the sticking point that makes them hate it, but the truth is that the real sticking point is the lack of compatibility, which 1) is improving every day, and 2) usually has alternatives or workarounds (even if they are a bit obtuse at times).

Looks like two of Bsky's content hosts are currently down (unfortunately including the one where my main account is located). So there's this weird thing where some accounts can get in just fine, but anyone on morel.east-us and oyster.east-us can't load the site right now.

More annoyingly, this isn't based on where *you* are located - it's based on where your account was created/where it paths through. So tunneling doesn't help you. My alt account (merakburr.ursamajorartworks.com) works just fine, but my main account (aliothfox.ursamajorartworks.com) doesn't. EVEN MORE infuriatingly, I am still able to get *notifications* from my main account, but I can't actually connect to read/clear them.

It's been down now for about 90 minutes, which is longer than their usual outages (which often last only a few minutes or a few seconds), but hopefully they get things running again soon.

Please note: some of you may see sticker thumbnails rendered incorrectly in your sticker packs (with a white background instead of transparent like it should be). I'm not sure what has caused this, but it seems to be an issue with Telegram's sticker bot. I've double-checked files and everything looks correct on my end. The issue seemed to happen mainly with people who have been supporters for a while and have large sticker packs. I tested sending the stickers, and even though the thumbnails don't show up correctly in the pack, the stickers themselves seem to work just fine, so there's no reason for concern as far as I can tell. If you're trying to send a sticker from your pack and it doesn't send correctly, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thank you!

For years, we leftists have hammered on "freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences." And that's true, it's not, but consider what we often mean by "consequences."

We USUALLY (not always) mean social consequences: getting banned from a community, being ostracized from friends, etc.

But what do those social consequences actually mean in an internet world? It's so easy online to find like-minded people. On social media platforms, we naturally gravitate towards people who think like we do, and anonymity means there are often few (if any) OFFLINE consequences to what we say.

And inside those clusters (or even broader communities) of like-minded people, people radicalize each other, for better or worse. As the groups grow larger and more philosophically diverse, they tend to factionalize and splinter into smaller groups, and the process repeats.

I used to be content to say "we need some diversity of thought in our social groups, but there are some positions that are non-starters." The problem is that nowadays, a lot of the things that were once "non-starters" are now mainstream (or at least widely held) opinions.

I don't really know where I'm going with this rambling, to be honest. I'm not suggesting a course of action. I'm not saying "maybe we need to make nice and let the MAGA dipshits be friends with us again" because fuck that. All I know is that I see a broad social problem with no obvious solution.

And while the right wing certainly has a lot to answer for, I'm not even sure that we can blame them for this specific issue. I think it's the result of being able to construct an online persona (which we all do; that persona is varying degrees of accurate to our real selves) and be always online.

People growing up nowadays are socialized very differently from how we elder millennials were. That's not an "old man yells at cloud"; I'm not saying our way is better or worse. I'm just saying it was different. Any internet access we had was primitive. Our childhood connections were face to face.

The internet - especially social media - has changed the way we socialize. And it began doing that from the beginning, but NOW we have an entire generation coming of age that has *never known anything different* from the always-online, always-connected internet-as-a-part-of-life way.

We have people in their late 20s and even early 30s who have no meaningful memory of a pre-broadband world. And I don't know what that means for the concept of free speech. I have to believe the cornerstone remains the same, but I think it's naïve to believe that nothing in practice has changed.

The way we communicate - the way we speak - has changed. I don't know what that means. But I think it has fundamentally altered the way we look at society and all of the social contracts that it comes with, whether we consciously realize it or not, whether we understand HOW or not.
