I write 1 page journal entries every few days, and i write notes and cards to people by hand now. Sometimes i use one of my fountain pens, but mostly these days i reach for a dip pen- it&#39;s so beautifully uncomplicated and immediate.<br/><br/>Periodically dipping the nib into the inkwell and giving a slight tap on the well or bottle lip to drop the excess off the nib before writing ten words or so... then another little dip and tap. The gentle scratching sound of the nib bouncing over loops, crosses, and dots forming words. The exquisitely fine hairline curls and luxurious thick ribbons possible with the flexible pin-sharp steel nib. The satisfaction in getting just the right amount of ink on the nib, how the ink coats the nib. There is something profoundly pleasant and comforting in this simplicity of this little ritual. It coated my dip nib like black velvet cream, and flowed beautifully- not too thick, not too thin. I found the beautiful handwritten script (cursive) personal messages on the backs of the cards to be extremely beautiful and endearing. I loved it! I used waterproof inks on the outside addresses. Included a few rubber stamping and decorative stickers. I also had some pretty postage stamps to use.<br/>I find my dip pen cursive writing is getting smaller and more delicate over time. I used a recommended proportion of 1 part GA (or a bit less), to 4 parts ink. (5 parts total) Mixed well, then tried my dip pens with it.<br/>Overall, seems to improve my writing results, if only because more ink clings nicely to the nib which means I can write more words and don&#39;t have to re-dip nearly so often.<br/>Adding the gum arabic does not seem to dilute the ink color. However, there may be a small reduction of shimmer effect in my shimmer inks. The ink in the pen for months was obviously more brown. I truly enjoy the act of frequently dipping my nib into the ink and gently tapping on the inkwell to release any hanging drops, the whispery scratching of the nib on the paper (the nib is sharper than fountain pens), the cleaning of the nib before I put it away. I find it all soothing and calming.. a tonic for the senses. I left the page open for about an hour before putting the notebook away. <br/>The following day, I then wrote on the other side of the Walnut ink page, with a different ink. I found that the pressure of my writing actually worked like a carbon paper- the walnut ink transferred in many spots onto the blank page it was lying against. !<br/>(Note that this Noodler&#39;s ink is not ACTUAL walnut ink, it&#39;s just named for the color of it)<br/>So, I&#39;ve learned not to trust things, and I now put a simple piece of loose paper in back of whatever page I am writing on, to totally avoid any possible &#39;carbon copy paper&#39; effect. Only Ruby Blues seemed to exhibit red sheen when I wrote in my (supposedly ftn pen friendly) journals, on Rhodia pad, and on Bristol, using ultra flex nib fountain pens. Black Ivy never seemed to show much sheen, though it&#39;s a nice intense blackish green ink that I enjoyed otherwise.<br/>But last night I wrote an entry in Black Ivy on my new Iroful softcover notebook. Because of all the inner workings, a millions issues can happen with the pen part of the equation, all issues large and small can effect how the nib writes.. it&#39;s complex.<br/>With dip pens, you have the holder and the nib. I also could use a little set of those &#34;Dinky Dips&#34; tiny plastic inkwells... the plastic milk cap I&#39;m using is a bit too shallow.<br/>Having great fun so far!
