Infinite Loop

Over the 12 years that we've been taking holidays in Iceland, I must have snapped thousands of aurora photos. This one is still among my favourites.

November. The 94% illuminated moon was high in the south-east, and lit the mountains on the opposite side of Berufjörður. The night was clear and still.

This curl of green aurora looping over the peaks and reflecting in the fjord gave me this great shot.

Driving up the east coast of Iceland on a brisk winter's day, the low sun barely warmed us. As we reached this isolated place between two mountain ranges, we could see that the head of the fjord was almost untouched by the weak sunlight.

The waning gibbous moon was the perfect final touch.

August, and a beautiful balmy day with a brisk and refreshing wind blowing in from the sea.

The moisture laden air met the mountains and was forced upwards across the glaciers. The result was these spectacular disks of cloud, briefly spinning over the peaks.

Huge, and quite bizarre!

The tall mountain beneath the cloud is Reyðarártindur¹ in Lón, south-eastern Iceland.

The beach water is shallow and clear, the dark volcanic sand beneath is showing through.

I'd wanted to visit this waterfall for a long time. When we booked our winter holiday touring the west and north of Iceland, we decided to hire a Superjeep and guide to take us to Aldeyjarfoss.

The cascade was jaw-dropping. The turquoise water foaming in the cold, black basalt teeth with ice between them, the 20 metre drop surrounded by huge icicles topped in snow.

The top of this breathtaking fan of white water, aerated from the very start. Lower down the drop it spreads out even more, forming a lovely lacy white wedding veil.

Dynjandi, the 100 metre tall waterfall cascading down into Dynjandisvogur and then Arnarfjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The flow rate of this falls can reach eight cubic meters per second in summer, but this decreases to ≈ 1m³/s in winter.

Late September, a gorgeous day for whale watching. As a humpback surfaced for a breath, a Rib boat provided scale.

The mountains of Víknafjöll were beautifully lit by the midday sun, streaked with a few cloud shadows. The deep waters of Skjálfandi bay were deep blue in reflection.

"Thar she blows" is a phrase from Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" to indicate the sighting of a whale spout.

Every time we've been there, it looks different. This time, a clump of cloud had formed on the leeward side of the peak, and patchy sunlight was picking out details in the structure.

Following the coastline along Ísafjarðardjúp, we stopped for coffee and to look for seals on the skerries.

We waited for the rain to stop before we left the car, and we were greeted by this gorgeous rainbow over the fjord.

We could see it's reflection in the still water, and a sharp eye can catch a ghostly double, just visible on the right.

Because of photos of this falls taken at sunset, it felt as if everyone was there at once to see the fabled spray rainbows. You can just see a double bow here.

Stuðlagil¹ used to be a hidden treasure, a narrow canyon beneath the deep waters of a glacial river.

All that changed in ≈ 2009 when Fljótsdalur power station became active, and Jökulsá á Dal river was reduced.

Incredible basalt structures in the ravine were revealed; towering hexagonal columns formed by the cooling and contraction of thick lava flows.

Strangely lovely and strikingly beautiful.

On our way to Skaftafell, we parked at a pull-off on Skeiðarársandur to admire the mountains under a perfect clear sky.

This is Hvannadalshnjúkur¹, at 2110 m/6921 ft high its summit is the only ultra-prominent peak and the highest point in the country. The glacier surrounding it is the ice cap of Öræfajökull².

"Falls Of The Hen's Slope"

I'd seen this lovely waterfall before, but we'd never stopped to admire it. This time I was determined, and we managed to find a safe pull-off on the way down Öxi pass.

It consists of three distinct drops for a total of approximately 53 metres/175 feet. The top cascade falls ≈ 10m/35ft and the middle tier then plunges 13m/43ft, followed by a powerful final drop of 30m/97ft.

We tried to visit these gorgeous waterfalls in October 2016 and in November 2021. Even in a 4WD vehicle we were forced to turn back - safety always comes first. The dirt road to this magical place is hazardous, to say the least, and we were frustrated by the icy conditions.

Near Bolungarvík in the Westfjords of #Iceland is a 638m/2093ft high mountain named Bolafjall.

A road was built to the top in 1986 for a radar station and in 2002 it was opened to the public. In 2022 an observation deck was added.

The view across Ísafjarðardjúp and Denmark Strait is astonishing. A fishing boat is lending scale. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve was clearly visible on that day.

This part of Lónsöræfi (Lón Nature Reserve) supports a range of migratory birds including whooper swans in the summer and autumn, some of which can be seen in this shot.

Flour Power

Downstream from Dettifoss in north-eastern #Iceland is one of the deepest parts of Jökulsárgljúfur¹ canyon. This area is known as Hafragil ravine.

Hafragilsfoss roars within it, ≈ 27m (79ft) high and 91m (299ft) wide.

The white colouration of the water is caused by a suspension of rock flour, fine-grained particles of silt generated by the grinding of bedrock by glacial erosion.

Thunderous

The gorgeous bridal veil of Dynjandi.

100m/328ft high, 30m/98ft wide at the crest and 60m/197ft at the base. Accompanied by six other lovely cascades below, this truly is the Jewel of the Westfjords.

The climb to the top is 200m/656ft and I didn't make it all the way. I'd been determined that I would but I disappointed myself. I saw a lot of beauty that day, though, so I was content.

Everywhere we stayed in #Iceland, we found a safe parking place where we could hunt the #aurora. We'd been lucky the night before so we headed back to the same spot.
Nada. Zilch. Lots of pretty stars.

We drove back to the hotel and, on the way, the aurora began. We returned to the hotel (it was closest) as quickly as we could and I immediately unloaded my camera.

Which is how I came to be in a brightly lit back yard.

Elementary

Þórufoss¹ is a pretty waterfall in Laxá í Kjós river in western #Iceland.

Its 16m (52.4ft) drop is a wide horsetail into a steep-sided ravine. The area lies between Þingvallavatn² lake and Hvalfjörður³ fjord.

When we first visited in 2014 it was fairly obscure, but it's very popular now.
In summer or winter it's well worth a visit.

Last Time We Were There

In September 2014 we first visited this lovely town and the sun smiled that day.

Surrounded by wonderful mountains, this place used to be closed for months by winter ice. Now roads have connected Westfjords to the rest of the country and travelling by boat isn't the only option.

Early November and we're flying from Reykjavik in the south-west of #Iceland to Akureyri in the north-east.

The air was crisp and clear, and the landscape was covered in icy snow.

As the plane crossed over Langjökull, we saw the #volcanic #tuya Eiríksjökull¹ (1675m/5495ft) below.
Strong winds blowing across the summit were creating mountain waves, lovely standing clouds rippling in the lee of the peak.

Eyjafjallajökull¹ is one of the smaller ice caps of #Iceland, but it covers the caldera of a volcano with a height of 1651m (5417ft) which erupted in 2010.

As we approached, in the distance we could see a sightseeing flight crossing the peak.
The empty caldera left behind by the eruption.
The glacier Gígjökull dropping to ground level.

Under The Plume

Even though the eruption is 100km (62mi) away, the vog plume has been windblown in our direction all day
Although the sun is shining, the combination of toxic gases in the air has changed its light to sickly orange, and the clouds are strange and unusual
The steam from the #volcano is mixed with sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and many others. These filter the sunlight to produce otherworldly effects.

Herdísarvík

The former home of Einar Benediktsson, a poet who made a significant contribution to the nationalistic revival which led to Iceland's independence in 1944.

This beautiful simple cottage is in Herdísarvíkurhraun in SW #Iceland which is comprised of 3 lava flows partially covering each other.
The day we visited, the wind howled like an animal and the sea raged so we sheltered behind the sturdy cottage walls. Perfect.

Troll Peninsula

February, my birthday. We spent the day on the road between Varmahlíð and Akureyri through dramatic Tröllaskagi in northern #Iceland.

2pm and we've reached Krókárdalur, a lovely river canyon with hiking trails.
2:30, wisps of cloud hiding in the folds of Kaldbaksdalur.
3pm, a farm nestled on the flanks of the wonderfully named Gloppufjall.
3:15, we reach Öxnadalur with conical Hraundrangi towering above.

One Lovely Afternoon

Mid-November and the air is crisp and cold with a soft breeze, not enough to ruffle the water.
The Eastfjords of #Iceland are magnificent on a day like this.

2pm and we're heading south towards Breiðdalsvík, watching the waves break against the rocks of Réttartangi.
2:30pm, the distant peaks of Tóartorfa are misted by the cold air.
3pm the waterfalls of Krossskarð are in shadow.
3:15pm and we're heading towards Djúpivogur and our hotel

Golden Ice

Early March, and our hotel manager stopped us as we were going for breakfast. "You should stay safe in the hotel this morning, there's a big storm coming."
So we did, and after we'd watched it rage past on its way north, we followed it cautiously.

Fitted with crampons, carrying ice poles and linking arms against the wind, we visited Gullfoss (Golden Falls) and had the place almost entirely to ourselves.

Fláajökull with Vatnajökull behind it, under a canopy of #AuroraBorealis and stars.

Höfn in Hornafjörður, south-eastern #Iceland is a recognised dark sky area.

On the left is Corona Borealis (Northern Crown) next to Boötes (Ploughman) and part of Ursa Major (Big Dipper/Plough) is on the top right.

I use a longer exposure on my #NorthernLights shots, as it captures more starlight. This is 8 seconds.

"Old Woman Mountain Pass"

Kerlingarskarð¹ has an unusual criss-cross structure which is highlighted here. There are a few farm buildings at the foot of the mountain for scale.

This area is famous for ancient ignimbrites formed from the deposits of pyroclastic flows, hot suspensions of particles and gases dropping rapidly from a volcano.
