I had a male teacher for grades 5 and 6 who was highly eccentric (and not gay - he was a family man without a whiff of scandal). He had old printing presses in the classroom and we learned about how books and newspapers were printed - by printing our own pages with movable type we set ourselves. He showed us violent war movies. He had WW2 and Vietnam veterans come in and give graphic talks. One guy talked about his baptism of fire in Japan - he said something like ‘I jumped into the foxhole and killed two Japs with my pistol - I’m glad I bought that pistol off a guy before the fight because I might not be here if I hadn’t.’ The teacher would tells us the casualty figures of WW1 and 2 and sometimes start crying. He also taught us chess, and he spotted kids who were good in math. He gave me math problems well in advance of 6th grade, and ensured I was pushed up a level in middle school. He was tolerant of wild boy behavior - including boys throwing things at each other across the classroom.

Only a few years later I heard he had to stop showing the war movies, the veterans weren’t allowed to give talks. He retired shortly thereafter - he was getting old anyway.

But this kind of man used to teach elementary school. I don’t know why he wanted to do it - but he was good at it. And I don’t think there are many like him in public schools now - and that isn’t good for boys.

This business at the Heritage Foundation reminded me of the symbiotic relationship between Christians and Jews in places like NYC, where they work side by side every day.

Observant Jews take the Sabbath, starting at nightfall on Friday and going through sundown on Saturday. This can put a little strain on their Christian (or just atheist/agnostic) colleagues when there is a weekend crunch. But no one ever questions their right to do this, their religious observance is respected. There are also a number of Jewish holidays that fall on weekdays that can make things a little hard for their colleagues once in a while.

Jews pay back their Christian coworkers by having their backs during the Christmas holidays and Easter. At least that has been my experience. I've never had any trouble flying across the country, and largely disconnecting from work during those times because there were plenty of Jewish dudes to man the station.

I think this would be a good way of viewing what this Catholic man at Heritage said about a shabbat dinner. Personally I wouldn't have any issue attending one if I were invited - but if he does because he wants to fast, or just eat fish, I don't see why it's a big deal. Just like when Jews unplug Friday night/Saturday evening - Christians accept it without complaint (or should).

Think the reason people aren’t having sex is because they are retreating from life. They had porn in the 80s. Drugs before that. It’s the screens. People are living in virtual realities all the time. We’ve all seen the folks on subways buried in phones and tablets - no interaction. People in 1980 had porn, tv and all that - but not so much of it. Real life was still where it was at. I keep hammering home that extreme cases tell you something about the everyday.

A lot of people find it hard to believe that people just lie brazenly, will do it publicly, psychopathically. But they do and will.

This is Ted Bundy in open court, after conviction, denying guilt for murdering several women - he would later admit to killing these women on TV. He’s doing some lying that convinced a lot of people for years.

It’s useful to spend time around criminals and liars so you know this is a thing. And you get a feel for it - when you’re being lied to.
