My father died about two weeks ago and in the aftermath I spent a few days reading through his saved letters from his family while he was in Vietnam and other points in his life. What struck me was how mundane most of them were. I always felt like you&#39;d only go to the effort of writing a letter of you had something important to say, but seeing so many little notes about needing to go to the bank or running into an old friend really changed my perception. The generally poor handwriting in a lot of them, too, has left me reconsidering my own worries about my writing ability.
