The daffodils are coming up! These are planted on the highest, south-facing rise of my land. I use them as a seasonal indicator to tell me when it's time to start my seeds indoors.

To record the seasonal shifts, I take a picture when they get about 2 inches tall. Then, I can compare the dates:

I have finished the temperature blanket panel for 2025! This is a decade-long project. Each stripe represents the local daily high temperature in farenheit: red is 90s, orange is 80s, yellow is 70s, and so on.

To capture the entire winter and summer seasons, the first bottom row actually starts on November 1st of the previous year, and the numbers are placed on January 1st of the labeled year, and it continues up from there.

Out here in rural USA, joining any new group requires so much initial teaching from me, it's daunting every time. I have to do all the little social dances to slowly reveal that, yes, I am married to a man, and we even raised children together!
No, my son is not adopted just because he's brown, actually, my white daughter is the one that's adopted.
No, I don't work, I'm a homemaker, but please don't do that heteronormative thing where you think that means I'm "the girl" in the relationship. I don’t care about fashion, and please don't complain to me about your husband. No, I don't know your cousin/hairdresser just because they are also gay.
No, I'm not wearing a mask because I have cancer, but thanks for noticing my thinning hairline and inability to gain weight.

I'm exhausted already.

The thing that keeps me going is that they *can* be taught. I've learned that a majority of cishet white people will wake up if they just make one friend who isn’t exactly like them. Being that friend is an extremely difficult chore and takes an enormous amount of patience, but it works.

This is my contribution to the resistance. Protesting is way too dangerous for us out here, and calling local right-wing representatives who won by a 20+ point margin is an exercise in futility.
But through joining local groups and volunteering, I have changed a handful of people's minds and flipped them from right to left. I have to believe that this is worth something.

I remind myself how the only reason the National Parks Service was created by Roosevelt was because his conservationist buddy took him camping and convinced him to do it. Sometimes all it takes is one good friend to change the course of history for future generations.

Mushroom week continues. Today's gem is Armillaria solipides, also known as "Honey Mushroom." This parasitic fungus can infect living trees and spread through hundreds of acres of forest through tendrils of rhizomorphs called 'shoestrings.' It is considered the largest terrestrial organism on Earth.

Yes, they are edible, but gross. Extremely woody, tastes like chewing tree bark with a light glaze of corn syrup. When cooked, they turn to black goo. Wild animals like deer and skunks love them, though, and seeing animal bites out of them is almost a hallmark for identification.

Found in big clusters at the base of hardwoods, they're easier to identify when they're small because the caps are covered in little black fuzzy hairs, which aren't as prominent when fully open. (Zoom on the 2nd pic to see them.)

A straight white guy friend was complaining about not being able to find any gaming groups for WoW that weren't full of MAGA assholes. He said he keeps joining guilds with older (60+) casual gamers like himself because he can't keep up with the kids, and he'll start to make friends, but then they will reveal themselves to be Trump-lovers. He asked, "What am I doing wrong?"

I said, "First of all, your screen name is Russian. Leftys are gonna be wary of that, and the Alt-right loves it.

This was about 3 months ago. Now, he tells me he joined a guild labeled as LGBTQ-friendly and has made several new cool friends. He mentioned that there are many women and PoC in the group too, and "Everyone's so nice on dungeon runs, telling people they did a good job and being supportive, sharing loot."

Tomorrow's Full Moon will be in Cancer, and some of us on the Eastern half of the USA will be able to witness a cool Moon-Mars conjunction. Watch for the little blip of red light on the lower left of the Moon as it rises, and it will dissappear as they line up with each other.

Metaphysically, this means a lot of the watery, emotional, introverted feelings of a Full Moon will be enhanced by Cancer, and be made actionable by Mars.

If you're one who has dreams or doesn't sleep well during Full Moons, it might be a long night. As far as magick goes, it looks like things are lining up to reveal the inner-self, or find things that are hidden.

The pagan community has gotten ourselves in a real troublesome spot with this whole "research your geneology" thing. Because we started telling people to look into their ancestry to avoid appropriation, instead of just teaching what appropriation is.

Now we have people who think they have to research their family history just to be a pagan, and that's hugely problematic. One, because having a DNA test to join a tradition is ripe for abuse, and risks ideas of supremacy. Two, because tons of people have no idea who their parents are. I was adopted, I know several people who don't know who their father is, and even more who lost track of grandparents names and don't even have a place to start.

Instead of focusing on bloodlines, let's just teach people what appropriation is: If another living culture or religion you are not part of actively practices something, you can't copy it, because its theirs. Easy as that. Think of it like an active copyright. Stick to reviving long-dead practices from ancient cultures that have gone into the "public domain," or create your own traditions, and you won't have to worry about it.

Knowing your geneology is not, and has never been, a requirement to be Pagan.
Now, if you think connecting with your ancestral culture will bring you spiritual fulfillment, will help you grow, will make you feel whole, then yes, do that, if you have the resources, its a great idea. Just make sure to check yourself so you don't start to get feelings like your heritage is somehow more special, or magical, or makes you more valid than other people.

For example, I'm an extremely religious polytheist and I think none of these things, I've never asked for preferential treatment from the state. All religions are not like Christianity, and when you assume such, it gives them even more power.

I live in the upper peninsula of Michigan, and here in the U.P. we have a popular cultural food called a pasty. (pronounced ‘past’ like it happened in the past- ee) It’s a savory pie pocket with beef and root vegetables.

The recipe was originally brought to the region by Cornish miners who migrated to work in the iron mines during the boom of the auto industry. The story goes that the miners had pasties for their lunches because it was a hearty meal with ingredients available all year, easy to carry, and could be warmed up by putting it on a shovel over the fire.

Here is the pasty recipe I use, which I have tweaked to my taste over the years. It’s a big batch, because I make a bunch and freeze them, they heat up really well.

Crust:
2 cups vegetable shortening or lard
6 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 cups water

Filling:
2 lbs ground beef
4-5 (2 lbs.) russet potatoes, skinned and diced
1 ½ c. rutabaga (½ medium), skinned and diced (careful, it’s hard!)
1 ¼ c. yellow onion (2 small), diced
½ c. carrot (1), shredded
3 t. Salt
2 t. Pepper
2 t. Garlic powder
Around 6 Tablespoons butter.
This recipe makes 12 pasties.

Mix flour, salt, and shortening until crumbly. Add water and mix until just combined. Don’t overmix, seriously, don’t stress about getting it all even. It will be slightly tacky and stretchy. Refrigerate while mixing the filling. Peel and chop and shred the veggies and mix with the meat and seasonings well.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grab a handful of dough (about 4-5 oz) and roll out into an oval that’s around 6 by 10 inches. Scoop a cup of filling and dump on one side of the oval. Place ½ tbsp chunk of butter on top and fold the oval of dough over to make a pocket. Pinch and twist the edges of the pocket to close. A few drops of water will help it to stick together if you need it. Poke a hole in the dough at the top of the pie to vent. Place pasties on a baking sheet and cook for 1 hour. Serve with ketchup.

Wrap leftover pasties in foil after they are completely cool and freeze them. To reheat, leave in the foil and bake at 375 for 40 minutes.
