It&#39;s so important to know when to tense what, and to otherwise be relaxed. But I suppose that if you can&#39;t reflexively tense you can try pre-tensing certain parts, for example try this, take a stance that protects most parts of your body (including your solar plexus) but leaves your abs open. If you have strong abs you can tense them, you will lose some mobility but if your opponent takes the bait and tries to punch your abs (then they&#39;re a noob) then you can tank the damage and look for an opportunity to punish, maybe with a clinch and knees or some kind of &#34;triangle&#34;? More if they have weapons or if there&#39;s something nearby that they can throw. <br/>Once you have to take 2 steps to reach a target it&#39;s no longer considered a threat range since you have to make 2 seperate movements to reach your target, which gives a martial artist just enough time to stance up and be on full gaurd. <br/>Needless to say if you&#39;re inside someone&#39;s threat range, especially the smaller ones, that if you&#39;re not on full gaurd then there are things they can do to you that aren&#39;t going to be possible to defend against. <br/>That can put you one step behind in a fight. Granted it&#39;s true that the vast majority of people do not know how to fight on a level where each motion matters, and if you do, well, you&#39;ll catch up quickly. But who wants to get hit even once? So when someone gets me in their threat range I go on a partial gaurd (basically position myself and prepare mentally in a way that doesn&#39;t make me look like I&#39;m trying to start a fight. My life would be so much easier if we were allowed to stance up on anyone who gets too close.) And I don&#39;t feel a lack of confidence or anything. I also can ignore the 2 longest threat ranges for most people cus you can just tell they can&#39;t take a step that fast and actually the 3rd longest isn&#39;t available to a lot of people either, so unless you look fairly fit I&#39;m actually kind of okay as long as you can&#39;t just reach out and touch me with your hands. That&#39;s too close for anyone to be. Natural threat range number 4. Punch range, knife range, shallow grab range (shallow grabs are grabbing a shirt or wrist or hair or throat with your arms fully extended. These are incredibly easy to break, don&#39;t bother unless your enemy has zero clue how to fight and if that&#39;s the case... stop bullying people?)<br/>The next and final threat range is true close quarters (also did I miscount?
