Buried in the last Spectrum Next KS3 update there's something that I think is not a minor announcement in passing, but possibly something big that could potentially bring hordes of new indie programmers, designers, artists to the Next platform. And hopefully many more people who stand to play some really good games as well.

A PICO-8 core is under development for the Spectrum Next, meaning the Next will be one of the first computers capable of running actual PICO-8 games on real hardware.

What I'm less sure about (because I'm personally not in the know of the RC2014 community) is about the ecosystem and whether the ecosystem would sustain all the parts required to perform equivalent functions.

Of course where I said "ZX Spectrum" I was identifying a specific 8-bit computer model that has very little custom design.

Other computers of that era like the Commodore 64 and the Atari 800XL had more complex custom graphics and sound chips.

But it's possible to consider those too, if anything like Harlequin exists for those other 8-bit computers.

zen80 update: improved tests***Apart from the already substantial unit tests, we now have two additional and rather stringent tests:***<li>This test loads the ZX Spectrum 128 ROMs (0 and 1) and runs that machine's initialisation process. Then it shows a statistical analysis of the instruction coverage that's been executed during rom initialisation. (total percentage of different opcodes executed for each instruction group)</li><li>The second big test implements traps as barebones CP/M shims, loads ZEXDOC.COM and runs its extensive stress test (this can be long). </li>

Work is ongoing to support ZEXALL.COM as well, an even more stringent version of zexdoc that also tests undocumented registers and quirks of the Z80, one of the hardest tests known. This will be next, after I'm certain that this passes all ZEXDOC tests without a hitch. So far so good!

Aren't there too many of them already? <li>There aren't too many of this one. In fact there is none.</li><li>The journey is the reward, the learning, the interaction of ideas, the dialogical interfacing of old and new, what was and what will be. That's, in essence, creation. And that's, in essence, growth. I choose creativity, and I choose growth.</li><li>Infusing new life into old platforms, and elevating existing ones that are not primarily promoted for ulterior reasons by big business. What works for human needs and what makes sense to humans is sometimes –and increasingly often so– not aligned with big business needs. And this is probably an understatement.</li>

They're pretty good, no question about it. I'm looking at XBerry Pi, N-GO, ZX TRES. And some others assembled in Portugal by a shop that imports N-GO boards and fits them in a Spectrum 48 case.

However, from a preservation point of view, the last design made by Dickinson is still meaningful and it still makes sense, even if the TBBlue boards made by Manuferhi and others are exact replicas of the Spectrum Next's TBBlue.

The Spectrum Next scene is too frustrating to contemplate giving $$$ to people who bought them to make a profit.

This game was never finished, because the author didn't find a publisher for it. Atari ST music has been added to the intro of this release. The game was made by David Spicer and this version with ST music in the intro was released by Tiboh in 2024. It is a Beta Disk version and SCL and TRD files can be downloaded here:

Yet another ZX Spectrum game around the general theme of raiding Egyptian tombs, made with ZX Game Maker. And as you would expect, resonances of Abu Simbel are present. For some reason made a little more interesting by the little twist of changing the identity of the hero/raider to a cute cat (Bastet is the name of a deity that was sometimes represented as a cat woman in ancient Egyptian theology)

It's still #caturday after all!

The explosion of ZX Game Maker titles is palpable. Keep them coming, the more the merrier!

The implication of GameNGen is that, if a difussion model can learn to be a Doom engine, it can learn to behave and present like any other type of graphically interactive software.

Based on this method, it's not impossible to think that one could create a videogame without any programming at all, but providing all the necessary input data, imagery, and animated behaviour for a model to learn.

Mind you, with enough patience, you could draw it all on a notebook.

I was a little chary of the Amstrad form factor, I really didn't like the Amstrad CPC family, and I had to pick my nose and swallow my pride when Amstrad finally delivered a Spectrum with a floppy drive.

But if you think of it, the form factor was actually invented by Sinclair with the QL. Wrong storage device though!

i had never owned a Spanish Sinclair before, or for that matter, a Spanish computer of any kind. Although this is technically neither... It's ZX Spectrum +2A ES, a Sinclair-branded computer made by Amstrad in Taiwan, with some Spanish language localisation, imported in Spain by Amstrad of Spain.
It's not in an extremely good condition, but counterintuitively that's a welcome thing for me, as it presents me with another challenge to bring it up to a better state!

And with that, I consider my little Sinclair-brand collection complete. For now! 🤣

It uses the audio port though, so it's analogous to using your phone to play .TAP files, not a fast loading system possible limited to a certain baud rate when using the system ROM loader.
