These legal residents of the US have been targeted by the government. Some were abducted off the street by masked government thugs.

Badar Khan Suri, Rumeysa Ozturk, Yunseo Chung, Mohsen Madhawi. And many more.

Their offense was to criticize a foreign country for its mass slaughter of civilians—a slaughter accomplished with US taxpayer-funded weapons.

But legal residents are supposed to enjoy the same First Amendment rights as citizens: speech, assembly. If these rights can be violated for one, they can be violated for any.

Rosa Luxemburg put it well: “Freedom only for supporters of the government, only for the members of one party—however numerous they may be—is no freedom at all. Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently.”

Freedom means “freedom for the other fellow”.

I hope we can all take a strong stand for justice for “the other fellow,” for those with whom we disagree. That’s what has set America apart. That’s what has made it great.

I’d like to share one simple but important observation on tariffs: they have been removed for Chinese-manufactured electronics like smartphones, but they remain in place for their components.

Thus, the tariff policy as currently implemented actually discourages US manufacturing—the opposite of its stated goal—because it’s now cheaper to import the final product than its parts.

Paul Krugman puts it this way: “we’re now putting much higher tariffs on intermediate goods used in manufacturing than on final goods. This actually discourages manufacturing in the United States.”

Matt Stoller writes: “It’s hard to imagine a better strategy for moving more production offshore.”

Of course, policy could change again in mere hours. But this in itself is an enormous problem, as such policy uncertainty must be truly paralyzing for businesses who would like to make plans.
