I decided to join the fun, at least for a bit, and have been pulled through 100 pages of The Fellowship already. It is kind of wild to return to this 1979 edition I bought as a 10 year old in WHSmith--to notice new things, and remember things I had forgotten. The little desperate acts of hope and kindness, that are set against an overwhelming historical sweep of devastation and loss. I can see why people are returning to this book now, in this moment.

I want to quote something beautiful you said in response to the somewhat ridiculous question of whether it is possible for computers to ever be conscious, if the latest Opus model or whatever isn't already:

This is unreal. The 2026 code4lib conference has been cancelled unilaterally by Carnegie Mellon University because the Department of Education raised issues with the diversity scholarships (which have been constant for at least a decade, if not longer):
