Hello there. I'm thankful that you are continuing to keep what was Megalodon alive. I've tried other Mastodon client and always come back to this one.

But it crashes a couple times a week.

I get random-seeming crashes that I can't easily reproduce and the logs just look like a memory leak.

Is it worth me when opening an official bug report when I can't tell you anything about why it crashes?

I used to think it was related to previewing web pages with the built-in browser since my phone is set to use IronFox instead of Chrome or WebView. But I changed the setting to always launch in the full browser and it crashed again not long after.

I'm running it on a Google Pixel 7 Pro. I haven't had the WiFi problems you describe on my HP OMEN 15-ax252nr with an Intel i7-7700HQ (2.80 GHz) CPU and NVIDIA GP107M GeForce GTX 1050i Mobile GPU running the current Linux Mint Debian Edition.

The problem I **do** have is with that GPU. Once I install the official nVidia DKMS drivers from the regular LMDE repo, the various powerstates become unstable. Hibernate is already weird in Linux compared to Windows. I've had issues with it for as long as I've tried to use it. But with the official nVidia drivers, hibernate, sleep, and shutdown don't work correctly most of the time. The screen shuts off and the fans stop running but the lights stay on, including the keyboard lights. Opening / closing the lid doesn't do anything. I have to hold the power button down and force it to shutdown.

The longer the laptop is on, the more likely this is to happen. It's a pain in the ass. I never had these problems for the five years it ran Windows 10 but it's reliability repeatable in the couple of years it's run Linux: Linux Mint, LMDE, and Bazzite all did it.

The companies that trained the LLMs scraped *everything* from the Internet regardless of permission, applicable laws, copyrights, and long-time agreed upon practices. They willfully ignored established rules and etiquette and used underhanded methods when necessary indicating they knew full well it was wrong.

They stole all of it without attribution, recognition, or compensation to the original creators.

Then they used this stolen material to generate billions of dollars in valuation with no intention of *ever* crediting the original creators while also using obscene amounts of energy, often produced by the dirtiest power available, thus creating more pollution to worsen global warming. These data centers also need ridiculous amounts of water to keep cool which is taken from public sources, often literally drinking water. It takes time to build data centers and the utility infrastructure necessary to run them. But they do not have time. If they take time, they get behind, and the money train leaves them in the dust. So they do what is fast and of questionable legality.

This is all before you look at the shitty quality of what genAI actually produces. GenAI does not think and cannot "reason" no matter *what* the companies behind them might say. They do not even know what "words" or "code" are. They look at tokenized values and make statistical guesses as to what should come after.

And they are doing it all so they can fire you from your job and replace you with a regurgitation engine trained on your own work. They want you to suffer. They want you to be afraid. They want you to have no power. They do not value human creativity. They hate it, in fact.

No company *that has a choice* should embrace genAI.

I've been writing short stories for more than 40 years. My manager is a drummer and has been a musician on the side for many years. We are the only two people I know at work who are visibly anti-genAI even as I'm working with products and tools that incorporate it.

Creators are the ones who understand what it truly takes to be *good* at something.

I'm not a great writer, but I have my own voice and style that I have built word by word, thought by thought. A genAI reduces four decades of reading, learning, experimenting, dreaming, trying and failing to a statistical model. It reduces my life to an equation to be solved. It reduces all of our lives, our talents to the lowest common denominator, to a product not a process.

If anyone can generate art that is "good enough" what use is there for real artists? That's the goal. Eliminate creativity in the population so we can be better controlled. If we can no longer imagine it, it's no longer possible.

The environmental and personal cost for genAI will never be worth what comes out the other side. I've been painstakingly teaching myself jq and JSONPath for months. I have access to a private ChatGPT instance at work and it can spit out passable statements for both. They aren't necessarily correct but they could get me started *if I let them*. I cannot in good conscience use it. I just can't. I'd rather go read the original Stackoverflow posts it's badly summarizing.

I like it here on the Fediverse in my little corner where I don't have to hear shills and automatons telling me how useless my ability to think for myself truly is.

I'm sorry. Some people do not "get it". They are pulled in by novelty without considering any other aspect. I hope you can have an honest conversation with them—one that does not include them gaslighting you about your feelings, one that does not include them feeling "attacked" or that this is "coming out of nowhere".

When you *create* something, it is sacred. To have it fed into a machine without your current so it regurgitate a flawed copy is prophane. It **is** a big deal. You spent time, mental energy, *joy* in the act of creation. You put thought into it.

Prompt engineering an imperfect clone does not honor the act of human creativity; it belittles it, tries to reduce it to an algorithm, a formula. It is a capitalist vision of what it means to create. The RTO mandate at work doesn't affect me directly because I live so far from any office and they aren't going to pay to move me. However, it *does* impact many if not most of the people I work with. It's obliterating morale.

It's a signal that the executives are completely out of touch with the needs of the people and a symptom of a larger disconnect between what really works and what makes the line go up. For a long time, we all thought this company was better than that. For a long time, *they were*.

Good employees, people with stellar reviews, have been told that if they refuse to return to office they will be fired. They have been told they have to have doctor's notes and HR approval if they need to work from home because they are sick.

We are being treated like children.

I know some people are jumping ship as soon as they can.

As such, I need to get my resumé ready and start doing what I can. I'm not going to get stuck doing the work of three people again. I'm already doing the work of two and RTO has made it difficult to hire the people who would take some of that from me.

I have not had to polish my resume in over 20 years. I need help. What are some good resources? How do you even look for a job nowadays? I certainly don't think LinkedIn is the resource it was two decades ago.

I've worked in IT since 1997, and in IT Security since 2000.

Also, I am a transgender neurodivergent (autism, ADHD, and CPSTD) bisexual woman taking care of a disabled neurodivergent (ADHD) cisgender woman. I miss a lot of work to take my wife to doctor's appointments. That is not going to change. I also want to work somewhere that is accepting of LGBTQIA2S people. I'd prefer to work as close to 100% remotely as possible. So my requirements for a job are high.

Bonus points if I can find a job that will move me to another state that is less red than the one I live in. I understand that would definitely require me to come into an office. At this point, it might be worth it to get out of Missouri.

With that said, I still don't know how to begin.

I'm open to advice or links to websites that could help.

This is an excellent essay by [Deb Werrlein](https://electricliterature.com/el-author/deb-werrlein/ ).

There are so many excellent thoughts spread throughout about *writing* not just as a **result** but as a **process** and how the **process** is what makes it writing as opposed to reading or editing.

It talks about how writing is a process of *discovery* because you never know where your thoughts will take you or where the story will lead.

This is an essay about the work and the joy that goes into actually *writing*.

> The physical act of writing serves as the distraction that lets the ideas flow. But also, and perhaps more importantly, writing forces the writer to think very slowly, only allowing the brain to move through an idea at the speed at which each individual word can be written. Perhaps that elongation of thinking gives the brain the time it needs to have new realizations. I think my problem is a lack of self-worth from the PTSD my mom's abusive second husband gave me from ages 10 through 22.

This is a question for amateur authors out there.
How do you keep writing when nobody else cares?

If that's enough for you to understand what I'm asking, then you don't need to read anything else.
For anyone who wants to understand where I'm coming from, keep reading and it's likely to be long and most of y'all will peace out.

I've been writing creative weird fiction since high school, thirty-five years ago, largely inspired by a childhood spent watching black and white creature features and other cheesy but incredibly earnest horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films and reading Clive Barker, Dean Koontz, Steven King, and, eventually Lovecraft and Derleth.
But I was also heavily inspired by James Joyce. Reading "The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" in English class was honestly life-changing. That's how I wanted to write. Joyce, along with Charlotte Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", and Conrad Aiken's "Silent Snow, Secret Snow" were my goalposts.

So that's how I write, what I aspire to be.
I'm not.
I will never be.
I'm not a great writer, merely adequate.

Further, I do not have a novel in me, just short stories and the occasional poem.
Nobody cares about those today unless you are a name or have a collection to sell.

genAI scraping the web to mulch its growth means I don't even feel comfortable sharing much of my work online.

I enter contests and I do not win.

I have no "fan base" nor even peers who look forward to what I have next. Nobody asks, nobody cares.
My wife has never understood my stories but strongly encourages me to keep writing.

So. How do I keep writing when nobody cares but me, when nobody *else* cares?

I mean, I have other things to do. I have other responsibilities. I have a *real* job. I have mental health issues.
I could just stop writing forever and nobody would stop me.

I write, but not as often as I would like.
I often wonder what the point even is.
I want to share; I want to make connections. I want to find **my people**.
But I haven't.
Maybe never will.

We don't need CVEs to detect or manage vulnerabilities. We have plugin IDs. We have TTPs. We have flashy vulnerabilities that get their own marketing websites. We have MITRE ATT&CK.
Our threat intel feeds give us TTPs which may include CVEs, but do not rely on them by any means.
Our threat hunting is more concerned with TTPs and MITRE ATT&CK.
When we set up officially supported orchestration between systems, they typically have the logic needed to understand each other.
The main way we use CVEs is as shorthand or a shortcut. It's super simple to determine which tools can detect a certain CVE. It's convenient to have a single database to look up details about almost any vulnerability. It also gives us a simple way to discuss the vulnerability.
It's important but not critical.
The last minute rescue is less about CVEs and more about this administration's haphazard and thoughtless treatment of... well, of everything. If CVSS and CVE, two things that are considered bedrocks of worldwide cyber security, are treated this poorly, what does that mean for the less visible projects? My current prescription is progressive and it's fine for driving, walking around, or reading a physical book. It's awful for using my laptop or my Steam Deck, though.
He gave me a separate non-progressive prescription just for computer use at my last checkup. Every time I try to use my progressive lenses with my laptop and start getting dizzy and nauseated, I'm reminded that I never got another pair to go with the other prescription.

Why?

My wife and I both prefer paperback books for books we want to own forever and read over and over. They are much easier to hold.
Yes, paperback books are more difficult to keep pristine over time.

Hardback books look great on a shelf, but they are so big and heavy and not easy to hold in your hands for extended periods of time, especially if you have arthritis or carpal tunnel or other age-related ailments.

If you read books by lying them flat on a table in front of you, the spines for paperback books get damaged. For hardback books, it depends. There are designs for hardbacks that prevent spine damage.

Obviously eBooks are cool for anything you'd just like to read once or if your house is too full of books in boxes and on shelves that you have no more room.

Library books are an exception. I'd rather get a hardback of a library book because those are generally in better shape than paperbacks. If I want to go buy a copy for myself later, I will get a paperback.

Also, there are the class of readers who believe that "damage" to a book is part of the process of it being well-loved. As it is read and re-read, pages get bent, spines get split, glue comes loose. It is part of their charm.
We are not among this group. We prefer to keep our books looking as new as the day we bought them for as long as we can.

I'd love to see some research on it.

I had another idea though.
Write your stories the way you want to write them then work with an editor to cut out bits until it's neurotypical.
I have a tendency to overdescribe and to do a lot of telling instead of showing.
I can write something that way and have a kind editor to guide me into cutting, elaborating, or changing how it was written.

You just start building on your base. I typically re-edit a story at least twice based on feedback and re-reads with a critical eye.

When you are not skilled in a certain thing, you likely have no idea what it takes to be "good" at it.
As a layman, you scarcely even know what questions to ask. And if your interest is only passing or surface level, you won't bother with the introspection necessary to see the depth. The surface is all it will be to you.
When you watch a master, they make it look easy, therefore it must be easy for everyone.
They think, "anybody could do that".
They believe in the American Dream, that talent and perseverance are rewarded with wealth. If you are not well-known, you are not worth it.

I think this is fueling the overreliance on genAI.

Who cares if it was fed the life's work of every writer and artist who ever lived with no recognition or compensation? They should have better protected and monetized their work. The genAI is doing what people do, what any person could do. It's combining and synthesizing, it's creating derivative works. Just like a person.
Do they think any person could sit down and study millions of written words and create something new that shares the same voice, *any* voice you choose? Do they think *they* could do it "if they had time".
How much time?
Years? Decades?
If they wanted to, right?
But they just want the output and the freedom to reject it or accept it without consequence, without having "wasted" their own time.

"How did you learn to write like that?" I might be asked.
"I've been writing creatively since I could write," I'd say. "Poems, stories, letters, essays, journals, whatever I could find.
"I never stopped reading books as I grew up.
"I kept writing when nobody else cared, nobody else read what I wrote.
"Even when it wasn't very good, I kept writing.
"Especially when it wasn't very good.
"It all matters. It all teaches me something."

"Oh, I thought you went to school for it."
And I am dismissed as less than. My work, meaningless.
"I could have done that," they think. "I could have done that but I had better things to do with my time and energy."

And that dismissive thought gives them permission to use genAI. Living their lives for something "better" than sitting around actually writing all the time gives them permission because they are "better" than me. They didn't waste time like I did. I should have just been a good writer from the start. It should have been obvious I was a master from the beginning.
I wasted so much time becoming mediocre instead of finding my true talents.
They won't make that mistake.
They will craft elegant prompts for the genAI and it will create something beautiful for them. It will prove that my choices were wrong and theirs were right.

That the genAI would have nothing to regurgitate without millions of people like me, writing and writing and writing, does not matter.
We were all fools and should have known a machine would one day take our works and improve upon them.

It is a lie they tell themselves even as the AI models are already dying from eating their own shit. They are collapsing under the weight of their own spurious garbage because they cannot create. It is illusion, artifice.
A comforting fiction.
To them, it removes the artist from the equation, democratizing creation.
No longer reserved for those with skill.

It is unsustainable. It is already failing.
But it is backed by wealth, by the people who truly despise relying on humans for talent, because humans have wants, needs, desires. Opinions. A human can say "no" or ask for more money or ask for time off to spend with family. A human needs to sleep.
They will ride this steam powered platinum train all the way down, until it derails and bursts into toxic flames, and then blame us for being fooled.

GenAI, the way it is being sold to us today, is a dead end. They know. They know it's devastating to the environment. They know it devalues actual human creativity. They know it churns out lies and fabrications. They know it's being used for massive disinformation campaigns, to build phishing platforms, social networking bots, to inflate news stories, to flood publishers with worthless submissions.
But, today, it makes money.
Today, it makes a prompt engineer feel like an artist.

The people who create should be more important than their creations. The *value* is in the person who knows how to hold a pen and write or draw, in the artist who paints, the sculptor.
Without creators, we stop growing. We stop seeing ourselves in new ways.
We stagnate and become insular. We look backwards.
We lose our own humanity.

If you've read many books and watched TV or movies over the years, you can learn how to emulate what is expected. With that said, it can be difficult to avoid coming across as cliché.
There aren't any specific books or movies I could recommend. I've read hundreds of books and seen thousands of movies and TV shows. I made a point to study how "normal" people do things because, for a long time, I wanted to be like that.
The trick is learning to take the essence of various scenes and blend them together so it doesn't read like a rehash.
Often, that involves a great deal of practice and having neurotypical readers give you their opinions as you are creating it.

I also think about my neurotypical family and friends that I grew up with and try to ask "what would they do?" and play that story out. If I know them well enough or have enough experience with being present for their reactions to things, I can write about it honestly.

My wife is more ADHD than autistic (although is a little bit autistic) and I rely on her to help steer my writing and provide suggestions. She's also an excellent editor.

The other option is to just write more autistic characters and hope you find your audience.

I do a little bit of both but I have no real audience to speak of so perhaps my advice isn't that great.
I love to write and I love to write from other points of view when I can even if I cannot truly understand them.

They react to the "rising numbers" like a call to arms precisely because they use that information to target us for harassment and other, worse, things. I'm stealth AF IRL because I can't deal with that. I'm a poser and traitor to my own kind, but I cannot risk losing my job or house because my wife is on disability and we need the insurance and flexible scheduling I have.

So desperate for a good night's sleep I took 25 mg of Melatonin. I still woke up after 5 1/2 hours and was awake for an hour before falling back to sleep and doing the sleep for 45 minutes, wake up for 30 minutes dance I do every weekend.
