SEC-05: YOLO Mode is over and YOLO it was! It was an expedition in vibe coding and vibe we did We concluded our last Demo Day on 10th October, with most participants having more than one demo, and 6 minutes per demo felt less. The spirits were high thanks to Ponchas and LLMs despite their sycophantic hallucinations. The fifth edition saw about 50% alumni and 50% new participants. It was built upon the explorations of SEC-04 to enhance our collective understanding and utilisation of LLMs, as well as the ideas explored across all the SECs. It was also the cohort where we literally memed our ideas to life! Great memes were born during Poncha-fuelled evenings and Sunday walks.

Main Themes

It is challenging to pinpoint the main theme, as the cohort was highly dynamic and participants came from diverse domains; however, one of the underlying themes was a local-first approach. Most things being built were oriented towards being offline as the default. This also lent into selling/creating markets for locally available resources viz. compute, hardware, maps & even IPs over Nostr and automated purchases of the same by machines using Cashu - Oh! How could we forget, wifi & data too - 🎩🤏 Tollgate!

A second major theme was rethinking the entire Internet stack using Nostr keys as identities that can announce, be discovered, and communicate with each other without having a domain, connected to centralised DNS servers, or having certificates from CAs. Audio/Video streaming & MLS was another highlight, combining Nostr with other protocols like Iroh & MoQ . The challenges of doing A/V, the simplicity of Nostr contrasted by the complexity of current browsers, inspired justinmoon (nprofile…vu4x) to rise up to the challenge and build a browser from the ground up, where he channellised his and other participants' collective hatred for WebRTC.

We saw quite a few projects on Maps over Nostr, where we not only overlaid information over Open Street Maps, but also stitched our own maps and served them as blobs. There was an acute need for deeper integration below the application layer of various tools and apps such that they can be easily installed and have a unified experience à la Umbrel, leading to many discussions & projects on local DBs, Wallet UX(NWC/NWA), Blossom, Torrents & local relays.

Two important toolings that were used over and over by various projects were the Applesauce library and ContextVM.

Applesauce has matured, is optimised, and very opinionated, which makes it extremely useful. Being functional in nature also allows it to be very reliable. It does take some getting used to, but hzrd149 (nprofile…tfpf) has published very good docs , extensive snippets and live examples . It's a fantastic library for building applications,10/10 recommended.

ContextVM is the mature version of DVMCP by Gzuuus (nprofile…psfv) . It is a lot more than just a DVM or an MCP server. It is a protocol to communicate with remote services in a structured manner without having to deal with Network configuration, IPs, etc. Irrelevant. What it enables is not just a protocol to communicate with your MCP servers remotely, but to expose ANY services and access them from anywhere if you know its npub. It was seen being used in many projects and was found to be very easy to work with. Read the ContextVM docs to learn more.

Experiments in SEC-05

This cohort saw many experimentations in the tradition of #SovEng:

We had a proper chef for our BBQs this time, and they were a feast with good cuts of handpicked meat from local butchers, Sangria, and freshly made Ponchas!

We had outdoor BBQs after our Sunday hikes, and they were quite fun!

Week 4 was an unstructured week to give everyone a breather from the intensity of the vibe, which was highly appreciated, and gave us new information to work with.

Week 5 saw collaborative work for group demos, an exercise in composition and building more complex things, which resulted in some excellent projects.

Paths Forward for "the other stuff"

We are starting to build less social media and more of the other stuff on Nostr. What we have on our hands are the seeds to completely rethink the entire Internet stack, layer 2 and upwards. We think we have the primitives and a general sense of direction to make ICANN and IANA irrelevant, DNS optional, Certificate Authorities unnecessary, and solve 402.

Path Forward for SovEng

As has been shared with our Alumni, we are professionalising and making structural changes to SovEng. We are stronger and way more motivated than ever. SEC-05 truly felt like our experimentations had matured, and we are onto something truly radical. It's time to focus our efforts and boost this 10x. We have big plans for next year, which shall be announced as they materialise.

Next item on the agenda is to brainstorm how we want to conduct the next year and beyond. In the very least, there will be the regular two cohorts, but we want to be more focused and have continuity that SEC is. We have been contemplating doing at least 3 cohorts, of which two will be a bit shorter (in spring & fall) and one of regular length, i.e., 6 weeks (probably in summer). Along with that, we do wonder if we can do smaller sprints with select participants on focused domains. Maybe even 3-day sauna retreats.

A lot of what we can do in the immediate future depends on a lot of some things. Regardless, we are very ambitious and our stoke is over 9000! SovEng will continue, and we will keep shipping the future no matter what!

Fediverse

First of all we have Mastodon (I often call it by this name because Mastodon is the de facto controller of the protocol), but a better name would be the Fediverse, which is ugly, but still better than ActivityPub, since "Activity" depicts a much broader protocol, conceived by the minds of unreasonable academics, unimplementable in nature, which was only partly adopted by Mastodon.

Anyway, it is very straightforward: clients talk to a single server, that server talks to other servers.

Nostr

Well, Nostr has been described elsewhere many other times, but its core new idea is that clients can talk to multiple servers, which gives us a very chaotic ecosystem of signed messages.

ATProto

Finally we have Bluesky, or, if we go by the name of the overall protocol, ATProto. Its core new idea is that the basic functions of a social networking server can be broken up in mainly 3 different kinds of servers, which then talk to each other in a pipeline.

When I realized that I can publish website using just static HTML and Nostr as a backend, I fell in love with the idea. I don't even need a domain name.

The idea

The idea is simple - use relays with long-form articles as a backend. And then display with some kind of front-end. Just generate a keypair, set profile info and go publish.

Never in the process is any kind of permissions, KYC, not even an e-mail. Permissionless like Bitcoin.

For people who are Nostr native, they can use their Nostr clients to view the content and interact with it - react, zap, reply, boost, follow, ...

But there are many people who are not yet on Nostr. For them, it's just a website like any other.

The tech stack

With projects such as npub.pro, I don't need a domain name, not even an e-mail address. I generate a keypair and I am good to go. For further customization, I started using oracolo which is a static HTML. I can either upload it to my own domain and web hosting server, or use their hosted service. I can host the HTML on cloudflare or on pgs. For pgs, no e-mail required, just generate a ssh keypair. The limit is 20MB, which is more than enough for the static HTML.

Talking back

The problem with this approach is that this is broadcast only - in order to interact with the project, you need to have a Nostr client.

Anonymous micro blog

Well, not really. Or rather - "yes, but". A Nostr client that can read is already in JavaScript embedded on the website. And this can also post. I have done interactions two ways: with anonmicroblog I have created a way to have shared Nostr identities to publish an anonymous micro blog. The key is derived in JavaScript in the browser using PBKDF2 (password-based key derivation function). A fancy way to turn a password into a key that is slow enough to make bruteforcing hard. This way anyone can post on the website, but in order for the client to get the password, they need a key. Check for example this post page for hundrator, or interact with it using Nostr at Hundrator (nprofile…rwm6) Or if you prefer English, unemployable (nprofile…dt7v) is another project that uses the same code.

Backend for services

I also have developed an Eso level estimator. If you want to know how esoteric something is, just write the idea and it will send a Nostr message to the bot eso-level-estimator (nprofile…zekf) .

You can also tag it, although I'm not sure if that works very well, but it should reply (it only reacts to the note where it's tagged, not to the whole thread).

The idea is the same - this is a Nostr native bot, but for those who are not yet on Nostr, they can use it from the web. It will generate an ephemeral keypair, send DM to the bot and wait for the reply. It communicates through the relays (and messages are encrypted, although only NIP-04). The bot doesn't even know the request came from web - it's a DM like any other, it just responds to messages.

Contact form

Back to the original idea of a website hosted on Nostr. I've done it for various projects by now, but the problem is that it was read-only. And every cool project should have a contact form. Usually, contact forms end up as a ticket in some ticketing system (which requires accounts with third parties or self hosting a database), or as an e-mail (which requires domains, e-mail addresses and often some form of KYC, or at least a phone number).

It is derived from the eso level estimator poster, but it serves as a contact form. It also generates an ephemeral keypair. It optionally requires a way to contact the user back (e-mail, Nostr or Simplex), is configurable with meta tags (similar to how Oracolo works) and even does PoW to limit spam (although that needs to be enforced by the realys used to refuse DMs without PoW). All configurable.

Why?

Why bother? The internet is becoming KYC and hostile to privacy. We all know about financial surveillance, but it does not end. This year, EU’s NIS2 Directive (Directive (EU) 2022/2555) is going to be enforced, which will require domain name registrars to verify contact information (including phone number verification!). What is sad is that it applies if you have an EU-based TLD (like .eu, .de), but also if you use EU-based registrar (think EuroDNS for an Argentinian domain). You yourself might have nothing to do with EU, but it still applies. I think this will be enforced by the network effects.

Having and alternative way to host content and interact with users is important. Nostr is great, but we might want to reach people who are not yet purple-pilled.

Within the Genesis narrative, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the Tree of Life serve not as mythological curiosities but as archetypal expressions of the dual structure of reality itself. They encode, in narrative form, the relationship between causality (the realm of differentiated knowing) and a-causality (the realm of sustaining being).

The Tree of Knowledge represents the birth of self-reflective cognition within creation. Its “fruit” is analytic awareness—the ability to discern, to divide, and to classify. This is the faculty that produces science, philosophy, and moral judgment: the mental architecture of the causal world. Yet the moment consciousness becomes self-referential, it inherits a boundary. Knowledge, as distinction, separates the knower from the known; it generates subject and object. Thus, eating from this tree is the awakening of finite reason—necessary for autonomy, but isolating by nature.

The Tree of Life represents what precedes and sustains that differentiation. It is not knowledge about being but participation in being itself—the animating Logos, “the breath of God” that gives existence to all forms. If the Tree of Knowledge yields epistemic power, the Tree of Life yields ontological communion. The two together form a complete cosmological duality: reason within life, life beyond reason.

The Fall as Epistemic Severance

To grasp knowledge apart from life—to elevate analytic cognition above its living source—is to invert the created hierarchy. The consequence of that inversion is what theology calls the Fall: the mind enthroned as ultimate rather than derivative. Exile from Eden was not an arbitrary sentence but a metaphysical event—the necessary separation of causal consciousness from the a-causal ground it had tried to appropriate.

In rational terms, humanity traded participatory being for representational knowing. It gained the capacity to manipulate nature but lost direct communion with its origin. The “veil” described earlier is therefore not merely epistemic but existential: it is the structure that prevents finite cognition from collapsing into the infinite from which it arose.

Knowledge as Limitation and Life as Integration

Within this framework, knowledge is inherently limiting. It functions by differentiation, by setting boundaries between categories. This is the essence of scientific inquiry and moral reasoning, yet it can never be complete. Every distinction presupposes an underlying unity it cannot fully express. Life—understood as the Logos’s breath within matter—restores that unity without negating the distinctions. It is the living synthesis in which knowledge finds its purpose.

To live “by the Tree of Life” is to allow knowledge to serve rather than dominate, to use reason as an instrument of alignment with the sustaining order rather than as a tool of rebellion against it. In philosophical language: cognition should be teleological, directed toward participation in truth, not mere control of appearances.

The Convergence of the Two Orders

The causal and the a-causal are not competing realms but complementary modes of one reality. The Logos is the uncaused principle; causality is its temporal unfolding. The Tree of Knowledge operates within that unfolding; the Tree of Life is its perpetual root. When the Apostle Paul speaks of seeing “face to face,” he describes the restoration of their unity—knowledge reconciled with life, analysis consummated in communion.

This convergence defines the ultimate telos of both philosophy and theology: not the abolition of reason, but its transfiguration. In the language of metaphysics, it is the return of the differentiated to the undifferentiated without loss of identity—a participation of the finite in the infinite.

Conclusion

The dual trees of Eden thus represent two epistemological modes:

Knowledge—the analytic function through which humanity navigates the causal realm, necessarily partial and self-limiting;

Life—the a-causal source that animates and reconciles those fragments within a living unity.

The Fall was the assertion of knowledge divorced from life; redemption is their reunion. The Logos remains the root of both: it is the life that underwrites reason and the reason that reveals life.

In philosophical terms, this synthesis resolves the tension between materialism and idealism, between empiricism and revelation. The world is intelligible because it is alive with intelligibility itself. To approach that truth is to eat once more from the Tree of Life—not through regression into ignorance, but through the integration of knowledge back into the living order from which it came.
