I was asked many times over the last years which Linux distribution I would recommend for beginners. As some of you might know, Google plans to control the way of getting applications on Android starting in September 2026 by forcing developers to pay a fee and provide government identification documents. That would mean that most of the FOSS apps out there that can be downloaded from Accrescent, Obtainium, F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid and whatever else won't be installable anymore.

Althought Google announced to allow sideloading further, their statement didn't changed until now.

"Starting in September 2026, Android will require all apps to be registered by verified developers in order to be installed on certified Android devices"

If you want to help keep Android an open platform, see here: https://keepandroidopen.org

We can only hope that Google change that and/or allow sideloading further for "advanced" users whatever "advanced users" are (I'm ok with clicking three popups and the "are you seriously sure" button)

#android #keepandroidopen #opensource #freesoftware #fdroid #accrescent #izzyondroid #grapheneos #obtainium

Since GrapheneOS has problems to get the sources of Android 16, I call on all Android OEMs to help the project. When there are UEFI entries missing for your Linux operating system, you can add them easily with efibootmgr:

As root: efibootmgr -c -d <disk> -p <efi-partition> -L <entry-name> -l <loader-path>

For example: efibootmgr -c -d /dev/nvme0n1 -p 1 -L "debian" -l "\EFI\debian\grubx64.efi"

It will use /dev/nvme0n1p1 and on it the file /boot/EFI/debian/grubx64.efi and add it to the UEFI boot menu. On next restart, the entry should be there.

NOTE: You have to replace "/" with "\" for the loader path.

#efiboot #grub #linux

I use GrapheneOS now for almost 7 months on my Pixel 8 Pro and it is an awesome experience. Here is an overview over the features I like the most:

1) Clean system: There are only a few pre-installed apps for basic tasks, and no Google services by default

2) Sandboxed Google Play: The possibility to use apps from the Play store as normal but with fine-tuned permissions and minimal permissions for the Play services itself

3) More permission control: You can control permissions as with default Android, but you can additionally control the network and sensors permission

4) More security features: You have more control over the system's security with switches for various things including exploit protection, memory hardening and Webview JIT

5) Flawless updates: System and app updates on GrapheneOS work without problems. Since I've started using it, I never had problems after an update.

6) Vanadium: It is the system's webview and a web browser. It is a variant of Chromium with added hardening and security.

Thank you npub1tva8g98fx0fks0pt38vr75tv02t30qd5ev7n5v7fcpl6t44hf7kqgg2yl5 (npub1tva…2yl5) for the excellent work.

#grapheneos
