Is it reasonable to think I could make an LED lamp inside a porcelain jar, with a proximity sensor to turn it on when the lid is open?

I see adafruit has sensors & LEDs, but I'm not sure how much circuit design would be required (zero experience) or how many lights & how much power I need.

I imagine it only becomes practical as a table lamp if I make it plug-in, but a battery option would be magical. Electronics should be small at the base of the jar.

The problem is not over-achievers making me look bad, but competition being required if I want to eat food or live inside.
