Most financial advisors show you the S&P 500 in US dollars, but I walk through why that chart is misleading: the US money supply has grown by a factor of 77 over 66 years, at 6.8% per year, which means assets priced in dollars look like they are rising when the dollar itself is falling. Measured in gold, the S&P 500 has at times dropped 93% over 23 years, and its long-term alpha over gold works out to just 1.4% annually. The real question is whether the Shiller PE, currently near all-time highs, can justify where stocks sit today versus every other asset class.
