They say the ideal grind size for a percolator is medium-coarse to coarse. A grind that’s too fine can be bitter, and make clogs with sediment, but if it's too coarse the coffee is too weak. I like super strong rez coffee that you can stand a spoon up in. Coffee tastes so much better from a percolator or ma outside on a camp fire. It's all up t individual taste in the end.

Her home stood along Manhattan’s prestigious Madison Avenue. Society expected her to follow a predictable path: marry well, host elegant dinners, attend charity events, and live comfortably among the city’s wealthiest families.
But Grace’s life took a very different direction.
At twenty-four years old, she began volunteering as a Sunday school teacher for working-class girls living in New York’s crowded tenement neighborhoods.
She thought she would be teaching scripture.
Instead, the girls taught her something far more disturbing about how the city actually worked.
Many of them were barely teenagers. Some were only twelve years old. They worked long shifts in factories, garment workshops, and laundries that stretched twelve hours or more each day. Their weekly wages often hovered around three dollars.
Rent for a small room could easily cost two dollars a week.
That left only one dollar for everything else: food, clothing, medicine, and survival.
Grace quickly realized the arithmetic of poverty created brutal choices.
Some girls went hungry.
Others accepted “favors” demanded by factory foremen who controlled work schedules and wages.
Some turned to prostitution—not out of desire, but because it was the only way to avoid starvation.
Many simply disappeared into the vast anonymity of New York’s streets.
Grace had been sent there to teach morality.
Instead, she began asking a question that challenged the assumptions of her time.
What if the problem wasn’t the girls themselves?
What if the real problem was a society that left them with no safe options?
That realization transformed her life.
Grace understood she possessed something the girls did not—resources, influence, and connections within powerful social circles.
Rather than treating poverty as a charity project, she began building something far more ambitious.
Infrastructure.
In 1884, she helped establish the Kitchen Garden Association, an early effort to teach young women practical skills that could help them support themselves. Initially the focus was domestic training such as cooking and household management.
But Grace soon recognized that domestic work alone would not free women from exploitation.
So she shifted her strategy.
She began advocating for vocational education—training that would allow women to enter skilled professions. Bookkeeping, stenography, office work, and other emerging fields offered higher wages and safer conditions than factory labor.
The idea was controversial.
Many people believed working-class women should remain in domestic service or manual labor. Factory owners benefited from a constant supply of poorly paid workers. Even some reformers worried that education might make working-class women unwilling to accept traditional roles.
Grace ignored the criticism.
She believed education created independence.
A woman who understood accounting could work in an office instead of a sweatshop. A woman trained in stenography could secure employment that did not depend on the approval of abusive supervisors.
Education meant leverage.
In 1887, Grace helped found one of the most influential educational institutions in the United States: Teachers College Columbia University.
At the time, teaching was not widely considered a professional career. Many teachers received little formal training and earned extremely low wages.
Grace envisioned something different.
Teachers College would provide rigorous training for educators, transforming teaching into a respected profession. The institution quickly grew into a major center for educational research and teacher preparation.
More than a century later, it still trains thousands of educators every year.
But Grace’s work extended far beyond education.
In 1906 she helped establish the national leadership structure of the Young Women's Christian Association.
Under her influence, the YWCA expanded beyond religious meetings into practical support for working women. The organization developed safe boarding houses where young women arriving in cities could live without exploitation by predatory landlords.
It offered evening classes that taught job skills.
It helped women find legitimate employment.

The couple, a man and a woman, were struck on their backs with a rattan stick in a public park while dozens of people watched, according to an AFP reporter at the scene. The woman fainted after enduring her punishment and was escorted to an ambulance.

In total, the pair received 140 lashes: 100 for sex outside marriage and 40 for consuming alcohol, the head of Banda Aceh’s Sharia police, Muhammad Rizal, told AFP.

It is thought to be one of the highest numbers of cane lashes imposed since sharia was implemented after Aceh was granted special autonomy in 2001.

The couple was among six people flogged for breaking the Islamic code, including a sharia police officer and his female partner, who were caught in close proximity in a private place. That couple received 23 strikes each.

“As promised, we make no exceptions, especially not for our own members. This certainly tarnishes our name,” Rizal said.

Caning is implemented in Aceh to punish a range of offences, including gambling, drinking alcohol, having gay sex and having sexual relations outside marriage.

Canada’s artificial intelligence minister says he has summoned representatives from the technology company OpenAI after the company declined to alert police after suspending the account of a user who became the perpetrator of one of the country’s worst-ever school shootings.
Evan Solomon says he is “deeply disturbed” by reports that the company, which operates the popular ChatGPT chatbot, suspended the account of Jesse Van Rootselaar over the “furtherance of violent activities” in June 2025 but did not reach out to Canadian law enforcement.
On 10 February, the 18-year-old killed eight people in the town of Tumbler Ridge. Among the victims were five students, aged 12 to 13, and a 39-year-old teaching assistant. Before attacking the school, Van Rootselaar killed her mother and half-brother at their nearby home.
The shooter had described violent scenarios involving guns to ChatGPT over several days in June, which an automated review system flagged, according to the Wall Street Journal. But the San Francisco tech company said it felt the account activity did not identify “credible or imminent planning” and so banned her account, but did not notify authorities in Canada.
Solomon told reporters he contacted OpenAI over the weekend to arrange a meeting in Ottawa and expected the company’s top safety representatives to explain how it would decide to forward cases to law enforcement.
“They will come here [Tuesday], and we will have a sit-down meeting to have an explanation of their safety protocols and when they escalate and their thresholds of escalation to police, so we have a better understanding of what’s happening and what they do,” he said.
Canada’s federal government is currently weighing how it might – if at all – regulate the use of immensely popular artificial intelligence chatbots, including the extent to which minors can freely use the products.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that staff at the tech company had considered alerting Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCPM) last year about the activities of Van Rootselaar. OpenAI said in a statement that after learning of the school shooting, employees reached out to the RCMP with information on the individual and their use of ChatGPT. Van Rootselaar also used the game Roblox to create a virtual mall full of weapons that allowed players to shoot one another in advance of the Tumbler Ridge attack.
While the company framed its decision to reach out to the RCMP as proactive, its handling of the issue has nonetheless come under fire.
British Columbia’s provincial government confirmed to the Guardian that while a representative of OpenAI met with officials one day after the shooting in a pre-planned meeting, the company did not reveal that it had suspended the shooter’s ChatGPT account months earlier due to its violent nature. The meeting was first reported by the Globe and Mail.
It was only two days after the mass shooting that representatives with OpenAI reached out to the province, for help in contacting the RCMP.
David Eby, the British Columbia premier, said in a statement that the pain the families were enduring was “unimaginable” and that revelations OpenAI had “related intelligence” before the shooting is “profoundly disturbing for the victims’ families and all British Columbians”.

"Instead of sleeping at four this morning, I found myself reading some of the most dark and dystopian shit I’ve had the displeasure of learning about in a long time. I stumbled upon a screenshot taken from Reddit, in which an absolutely shameless trans-identified man pretends to be infertile, along with a reference to an organization called the International Society of Uterus Transplantation.

As I previously mentioned, the uterus is not just floating around in our bodies on its own. It is part of a coordinated reproduction tract with the cervix and vaginal canal. Did you know that the tissue of the cervix is hormonally responsive in a way that no male body tissue is? That’s kind of neat, right?
Endocrine System Tuned for Pregnancy
Administering estrogen and/or progesterone to a male is not enough to simulate the complexity of a body built for pregnancy and childbirth. A woman’s body incorporates essential cyclic and pregnancy-responsive ovarian hormone signaling that cannot be replicated medically.
Immune Adaptations
Our bodies do not like to have things inside of them that do not belong there, especially bodily organs from someone else. I previously mentioned the risk of a male body rejecting a uterus, but have you considered that a fetus is half genetically someone else? Our bodies have evolved a pregnancy-specific immune modulation in order to ensure that both the fetus is safe while allowing the mother to fight infection. A male body is not capable of performing this balancing act, resulting in serious risks to both the fetus and the man in question.
Vascular Architecture
This is more pregnancy magic. A woman’s body undergoes vascular remodeling that, amongst other benefits, increases blood volume and cardio output in order to form a placenta. A man’s body is not capable of placentation, and that’s a big deal breaker.
Skeletal and Connective Tissue Design
There are important structural differences, as well as more pregnancy magic going on here. Of course, a man does not have an attached cervix and vaginal canal in order to give birth, but if he did, his pelvis would not allow a baby to pass through (a woman’s barely does already). And then there’s the pregnancy magic: the mother’s spine curvature, ligaments, and connective tissue change in response to pregnancy hormones.

Pregnancy involves a controlled shift toward:
insulin resistance (to prioritize fetal glucose supply)
fat storage and later mobilization
altered lipid and protein metabolism
There’s nothing in males that allows these finely-tuned adjustments to be made, putting them at risk for severe metabolic dysregulation.
Post-Birth Integration
As many of you are aware, we already have examples of men who have put themselves and their narcissistic desires ahead of their partner and baby by breastfeeding.

Jasmine Sussex, in particular, was egregiously punished for raising her concerns about Jennifer Buckley, a trans-identified man who had invaded the Facebook breastfeeding community she was involved with:
Buckley [had been] boasting about making ‘colostrum’ for his newborn son as a transgender ‘mother.’ I didn’t respond to him directly … but I did raise with the ABA (Australian Breastfeeding Association) that ABA Counsellors are entitled to a safe workplace and that what appeared to be a man identifying as a woman was on the page boasting about making colostrum. Only the birth mother makes colostrum,” Sussex explains, noting that she was swiftly penalized for raising her concerns about him.
I was blocked from the [Facebook] page and sent an email that afternoon saying it was a breach of our code of conduct/ethics for me to even raise this as a workplace health and safety issue with the ABA.”
Sussex says that she received an email from the ABA’s National Training Manager the next day removing her from her service on the National Government Funded Breastfeeding Helpline.

Building security guards responded to reports of a fight and found the woman trying to push Contreras out of her apartment, the filing stated.
The guards were attempting to intervene when Contreras allegedly attempted to use a taser on one of them but missed.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with fourth-degree attempted assault constituting domestic violence, two counts of harassment and one count of unlawful use of a stun gun.
Contreras pleaded not guilty to charges and was released on her own recognizance. Additionally, a no-contact order was issued, and Contreras's next court date is scheduled for January 20. "

"OpenAI plans to allow a wider range of content, including erotica, on its popular chatbot ChatGPT as part of its push to "treat adult users like adults", says its boss Sam Altman.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Mr Altman said upcoming versions of the popular chatbot would enable it to behave in a more human-like way - "but only if you want it, not because we are usage maxxing".

The move, reminiscent of Elon Musk's xAI's recent introduction of two sexually explicit chatbots to Grok, could help OpenAI attract more paying subscribers.

It is also likely to intensify pressure on lawmakers to introduce tighter restrictions on chatbot companions.

OpenAI did not respond to the BBC's requests for comment.

Mr Altman said OpenAI had previously made ChatGPT "pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues".

These changes were announced in a blog post in August, which no longer appears on OpenAI's website.

"We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right," Mr Altman posted on Tuesday.

He said ChatGPT could soon relax the restrictions "now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools".

He added: "In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our 'treat adult users like adults' principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults."

The changes come after OpenAI was sued earlier this year by parents of a US teen who took his own life.

The lawsuit filed by Matt and Maria Raine, who are the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, was the first legal action accusing OpenAI of wrongful death.

The family included chat logs between Adam, who died in April, and ChatGPT that show him explaining he has suicidal thoughts.

In a statement given at the time, OpenAI told the BBC it was reviewing the filing.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the Raine family during this difficult time," the company said.

Child safety concerns
Written erotica does not require age verification in the UK under the Online Safety Act.

However, pornographic images, including those generated by AI, would require users to prove they are over 18.

In the US, critics say OpenAI's decision to allow erotica on the platform shows the need for more regulation at the federal and state levels.

"How are they going to make sure that children are not able to access the portions of ChatGPT that are adult-only and provide erotica?" said Jenny Kim, a partner at the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner.

Ms Kim is involved in a lawsuit against Meta that claims the company's Instagram's algorithm harms the mental health of teen users.

"OpenAI, like most of big tech in this space, is just using people like guinea pigs," she said.

In April, TechCrunch reported that OpenAI was allowing accounts in which a user had registered as a minor to generate graphic erotica.

OpenAI said at the time that the company was rolling out a fix to limit such content.

A survey published this month by the nonprofit Centre for Democracy and Technology (CDT) found that one in five students report that they or someone they know has had a romantic relationship with AI.

On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill passed by the state legislature that would have blocked developers from offering AI chatbots companions to children unless the companies could guarantee the software wouldn't breed harmful behaviour.

Newsom said it was "imperative that adolescents learn how to safely interact with AI systems" in a message that accompanied his veto.

At the nationwide level, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an inquiry into how AI chatbots interact with children.

In the US Senate last month, bipartisan legislation was introduced that would chatbot users to file liability claims against their developers.

Why introduce erotica?
Mr Altman's announcement on Tuesday comes as sceptics have been questioning the rapid rise in the value of AI tech companies.

OpenAI's revenue is growing, but it has never been profitable.

Tulane University business professor Rob Lalka, author of The Venture Alchemists, said the major AI companies find themselves in a battle for market share.

"No company has ever had the kind of adoption that OpenAI saw with ChatGPT," Prof Lalka told BBC News.

"They needed to continue to push along that exponential growth curve, achieving market domination as much as they can," he added."

"Filming for HBO's controversial Harry Potter series was blighted by a small group of trans rights protestors on Tuesday, just days after bosses reportedly increased security on the set.

The big-budget show relocated production to a quiet street in Skipton in Yorkshire, with huge structures erected on a row of residential rooftops for the scenes.

For the nighttime scenes, one actor was seen perched atop a chimney with a wand in his hand, while a crane was used to stretch the camera towards him.

However, in the wake of backlash from the trans community to Harry Potter author JK Rowling, a small number of protestors gathered on the street to interrupt filming.

One brandished a sign that read Say No To Transphobia, and while there is no suggestion that any of the individuals shown have been involved in any wrong-doing, onlookers said the protestors attempted to set off fireworks to disrupt the set.

Last week, it was reported that security on the set had been ramped up over growing concerns that transgender activists were planning to sabotage the new project.

The rumoured unlawful entry into the Diagon Alley set came amid growing backlash in the trans community towards Potter author JK Rowling, who has been long outspoken on gender identity and women's rights.

Rowling has endured a furious backlash after voicing concerns over the dismissal of biological sex in favour of focusing on gender identity to the detriment of women's rights, but has consistently denied being transphobic.

Just last week, the Edinburgh-based writer mocked lawmakers on the Vancouver Park Board in Canada after they apologised for hosting a 'transphobic' Potter-themed event due to her views.

Now, security officials on set are said to be fearing that the fury directed at Ms Rowling could seep its way into planned filming in Yorkshire and Cornwall over the coming months.

Some trans rights supporters are believed to be plotting moves to disrupt productions, allegedly posting online that it would be the perfect 'protest opportunity' against Ms Rowling, who is one of the executive producers on the show.

One insider has gone as far as calling it a 'massive headache' for bosses at HBO, who are creating the new show which is set to hit screens in 2027.

They told The Sun: 'This has been a massive headache for the creators and sparked a massive investigation within the studios about the breach in security.

'Security has now been boosted as a result of what’s happened, but also what is expected to happen at some point due to the discussions taking place online among Trans activists.

The Daily Mail has approached HBO for comment.

Earlier this month, one village being constructed for the new show, which will feature John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Rebeus Hagrid, was pictured for the first time in Hertfordshire.

The sets being constructed looked to be a thatched cottage, a road, a sports stand, a greenhouse and a stone outbuilding.

While details are not yet clear, the sports stand could be for scenes involving the fictional sport of Quidditch, while other locations could be the Burrow which is the family home of the Weasleys and Hagrid's Hut.

The nearby farm area was also snapped having been transformed into the wizarding world, with filming thought to soon be moving there from the current area in Cornwall being used to shoot scenes.."

"Many people have observed that a lot of those at the No Kings protests are white, left-wing Boomers. I don’t have demographic data to back this up, but based on my observations of Boomers in my friends and family circle, it does seem that this group is clinging the hardest and loudest to Wokeism and general left-wing derangement. I do have some Millennial friends who are still drunk on the Kool-Aid, but those who are tend to identify as some flavor of LGBT+ even though they are straight. They also tend to be rather mentally ill and comfortable sharing their struggles with mental illness, or their sheer inability to “adult”, on social media. By identifying into the LGBT+ community, they gained a lot of corrosive power that they are now grappling with losing. On the surface, this looks very different from the left-wing Boomers who are retired after having some career success, are generally well-educated, consider themselves allies of the LGBT+ community while not identifying as part of it, and who don’t air their dirty laundry on Facebook.

Given that my dad is in this demographic of Boomers, this is the primary source of my frustration. Below are just my general observations of this group as I try to figure out their motivations for going down with a ship that to everyone else is obviously sinking. (Obviously, Boomers are a large demographic population, and this certainly does not apply to every or even most Boomers.)

Protesting No Longer Works

First, I share their concerns about Trump sending the National Guard unasked into liberal cities, and I don’t trust Trump. But I’m under no delusions that taking to the streets accomplishes anything productive other than making the people who participate feel good about their own sense of righteousness. Our society is so polarized that protesting is no longer a viable means of effecting change. By and large, it’s become a way to signal your politics.

I think the people marching would be more effective if they sat down and listened with the intention to understand those of us who are disaffected by the left wing and to understand why they are hemorrhaging support. Rather than brandishing their righteousness they need to focus more on the hard work of looking inward and course-correcting.

I also think that people on both the right and the left would do well to understand radicalization and how right-wing radicalism fuels left-wing radicalism, which in turn fuels right-wing radicalism, creating the nasty spiral we’re in. We need to learn how algorithms distort our perception of the world and how to be more savvy about our social media use and news consumption, etc. But hey, it’s easier and more fulfilling to march. There’s no heady sense of righteousness from realizing you were wrong about some things or under the sway of powerful algorithms.

The Desire to be Relevant

My parents were never introspective people. I don’t think that’s a Boomer trait, I think it spans generations. But I do see that with Boomers there seems to be a desperation to be seen as relevant and attuned to the up-and-coming generation in a way their parents weren’t. My grandparents held onto antiquated, racist ideas and were never comfortable with the gay rights movement. To be clear, my grandparents weren’t cruel people who used slurs, and they welcomed my husband, who is brown and the child of immigrants, into the family. They didn’t believe in segregation. But they would make remarks about white people being “normal,” as though other races weren’t, or they would downplay how bad Jim Crow was. Like many people my age, we loved them because they were our grandparents, even if we rolled our eyes at their perceptions of race issues. They were products of their time and couldn’t help it."
