Does anyone have any experiences with successfully connecting #Fediverse apps with Brid.gy _other_ than #Mastodon and Bookwyrm? I tried but failed to connect my #Pixelfed account earlier, so I am curious about any other possibilities.

I am all for using this possibility, if only to show the fine folks at #Bluesky that we have a rich ecosystem of different apps over here. 😉

Sure, a lot of tech people in the developed world can afford this. But I suspect this is one of the major barriers to entry into the #Fediverse for people in developing countries

The Fediverse is far more centered on the developed world than #Twitter or #Facebook were. And that lack of representation from developing countries hurts us.

The revolution needs to go global if it is to succeed.

During the recent #JesseSingal controversy, we have seen how the #Bluesky moderation team has failed to take effective action against a notorious transphobe.

Beyond the lack of surprise, we should also note that this lack of action is something that got quite a few #Fediiverse instance defederated. While Bluesky itself is obviously not an ActivityPub-based system, we _can_ connect to them via services such as brid.gy. But should we?

Obviously, everyone needs to decide what they are comfortable with, and what they consider to be vital for the safety of themselves and others on their instance. A domain block of bsky.brid.gy is entirely understandable and reasonable under these circumstances. But what about those who use it to connect to Bluesky?

Personally, while I will not open up an account on Bluesky itself, I do use brid.gy and will continue to do so. I think it is important to show the world - including Bluesky - that we on the Fediverse are out there, are active, and worth following. And if some Bluesky readers realize that interacting with me and others around here will be much more comfortable if they also open up an account on the Fediverse, then so much the better.

However, I am also responsible for any posts I _share_ from Bluesky, just as I am responsible for anything else I post. I have absolutely no intention of sharing (say) pro-TERF propaganda, for instance - but anyone who shares content from Bluesky that is actively harmful to others deserves to be reported and blocked or banned if appropriate.

So, what are _your_ thoughts on using connectors for connecting with Bluesky?

They are all firmly in the hands of the oligarchs who can and do manipulate them to suit their political and personal agendas. Elon #Musk aiding and abetting the #fascist takeover of the USA is the most blatant example, but it is by no means the only example of the major harm done by this approach.

I am still looking for a new #Mastodon instance I can migrate to early next year. I am looking for:

- Should make an honest effort to keep up with the latest software updates.
- Be friendly to writers (since my main focus will be on folklore writing)
- No known major problems with the moderation of the admins.
- A character limit of at least 2000 (you can check it via the api, by adding /api/v1/instance to the instance name)

I have evaluated and discarded:

- pagan.plus (limits mastodon.social - understandable, but since I am a self-published author who wants reach it's not ideal for me)
- c.im (geoblocks entire countries, which I am not a fan of)
- infosec.exchange (seems to be for people who are primarily interested in IT Security topics, which doesn't fit my profile)

They were explicitly tasked to _control_ beggars, and not help them in any way. Which just goes to show that shitty behavior towards poor people by the authorities was well-established long before the advent of #LateStageCapitalism .

Regarding #Brazil banning #X :

After the disaster of the Weimar Republic, the Federal Republic of #Germany came up with the concept of the "Wehrhafte Demokratie" - a "democracy that can defend itself". Fundamental to this concept is that people, groups, and organizations who want to overthrow the basic democratic order should _not_ get a "level playing field".

So while I can understand people worried about any kind of #censorship , I think by this standard this action is justifiable. Brazil went through an attempted coup, and X - and Elon #Musk - were instrumental in aiding the coupists.

And by now Elon Musk has established a clear pattern of "wanting to overthrow the democratic order" - _any_ democratic order. Thus, it is valid if Brazil wants to restrict his speech.

I see this as part of the "Paradox of Tolerance" - tolerating the intolerant will result in less tolerance. And tolerance, like freedom of speech, are social contracts. If you break the social contract - as Elon Musk has - then there should be consequences.
