‘Substantial evidence’ of double-tap strike in killing of Gaza’s Hind Rajab

Campaign group Avaaz analyses the timeline of events to conclude that violations show Israel systematically kills first responders.

In the final hours of her life on January 29, 2024, Hind Rajab’s feeble voice could be heard desperately pleading with her mother and emergency workers for help, as she was trapped in a car surrounded by the bodies of six of her relatives.

After finally getting clearance from the Israeli military in Gaza City, a Red Crescent ambulance raced to save the five-year-old girl. But two paramedics were killed when their marked vehicle – whose sirens were blaring – came under Israeli tank fire. The remains of the nine victims were recovered 12 days later.

Two years after the tragedy, a report claims this was a “double tap” attack by the Israeli army. A double-tap strike essentially means carrying out two strikes on the same target, often wounding or killing medics and civilians who are coming to the aid of people harmed in the first attack.

Analysis by the global campaign group Avaaz has found evidence that the killings contravened international combat law under the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute.

A British court has heard evidence that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) “misled” its audience during the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

The evidence was presented as part of documents in a case being heard by a UK employment tribunal, in which five journalists of Arab origin accuse the BBC of discrimination and of unfairly dismissing four of them for refusing what they described as racist and discriminatory practices within BBC Arabic service.

The five complainants are Ahmed Rouaba, of Algerian origin; Dima Odeh, of Syrian origin; Nahed Najar, of Palestinian origin; and Mohamed El-Ashiry and Amer Sultan, both of Egyptian origin. The claimants are represented in the case by John Barnes from Albertson Solicitors. This is the first case of its kind brought by this number of journalists from the Arabic of the BBC Service of World Service against the long-standing news corporation.

Last year a Neo-fascist member of parliament was allowed to be present at this memorial and in the spotlights. Besides that an activist was not allowed to protest to that anywhere near. Children often have to be escorted to protect them from stone-throwing settlers; their schools are frequently invaded by the IDF and their teachers harassed and sometimes arrested. There have been numerous demolitions in areas where settlements are expanding. We have all seen what the IDF has done in Gaza to schools, colleges and universities. Not collateral damage; education is a threat.

And yet the children, the students and their teachers continue their struggle against all the odds, achieving remarkable standards.

I recall a twelve year-old boy reading me his poem; it was in English.

Insurance companies Allianz and Aviva have reportedly ended their coverage of Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems, according to campaigners.

Pro-Palestine activists said on Tuesday that the two insurers no longer provide policies to Elbit Systems following months of direct action and protests. The campaign was initially organised by the group Palestine Action in October 2024, before it was proscribed as a terrorist group in July.

Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, told Novara Media that “this victory is testament to the power of direct action, and also exemplifies why Palestine Action was proscribed”, adding that “it was banned because it was effective at disrupting the Israeli weapons industry”.

Campaign groups Defend Our Juries and Prisoners for Palestine, which oppose the proscription of Palestine Action and the imprisonment of its activists, said in a social media post that the development demonstrates that “direct action gets results”.

We have heard from the Gaza Media Office that about 288,000 Palestinian families are suffering harsh weather conditions as Israel continues to restrict the entry of humanitarian supplies, primarily the entry of much-needed makeshift tents.

The humanitarian crisis is really spiralling out of control. Civilians in Gaza need, according to the media office, about 300,000 tents and mobile houses to house hundreds of thousands of families who have been badly impacted by the rain and flooding. They live in heavily damaged, dirty and flooded tents. Many are left stranded without any shelter.

That’s why some families have taken refuge in already overcrowded shelters, while others were trying to find refuge in whatever is left standing in Gaza City or in the south of the Strip.

The media office has called the US president to exert pressure on Israel to uphold its commitments to the ceasefire agreement, especially when it comes to the implementation of the humanitarian protocol.

Having been absent for a year, I almost didn’t recognise the road from Jericho to Ramallah. Entire communities in the Jordan Valley, Bedouin communities, have disappeared. All I saw was what remained of their homes and barns. They were torn down and burned by Israeli settlers.

I did see several young Israeli settlers, armed, taking over the land, putting up fences to mark their new claimed territory, setting up an outpost with an Israeli flag. When I tried to pull out my phone and take pictures or capture this on video, the driver I was with asked me not to do that because he didn’t want to be marked by the Israeli settlers, who roam the area freely and who can call the Israeli army. He lives in the Jordan Valley, and he feared retribution.

So really, it’s quite remarkable in the span of 12 months how much has changed and the freedom with which Israeli settlers roam.

While Netanyahu now has to play nice with Trump and adhere to the ceasefire, as far as Israel is concerned, in the occupied West Bank, the agenda of this government is of taking over land, of allowing settlers to not only take up more arms, but to use them quite freely and to assist them by deploying the Israeli army.

There's more than one reason to celebrate a little in my opinion. Yes, there's some bad news about this election as well but let's see.

One : The biggest party D66 has a preference to go in a cabinet with the biggest left-leaning party which means that there's a possibility for a significant change compared to the current really terrible awful fascist-leaning and unstable cabinet.

Two : The party leader of D66 has spoken out several times against PVV Wilders fascist-leaning party. Several parties also ruled out working together with Wilders.

Three : The party leader of D66 who is likely to become prime minister is openly gay. This would be the first gay prime minister in NL. I consider this a good development for more tolerance (rather than Wilders's hate and division and picking on minority groups).

Four : Now that Wilders/PVV is not again the biggest party it will prevent the Wilders dream of becoming prime minister. In the current cabinet Wilders was not allowed to become prime minister, and it appears Wilders is frustrated about this. Now the initiative is with D66. Wilders can continue to try to distract but is not in the driver's seat.

The entire northern part of the Gaza Strip has not been receiving any aid trucks over the past 10 days.

The crossing on the northern part of the Strip has been blocked for more than 50 days now – close to two months of ongoing blockade.

So, whatever’s available in the markets now, people are eating the stuff that’s on commercial trucks.

We did walk around and check some of the markets, and we asked every single vendor where they are getting their items, the products, the fresh produce from, and they’re getting them from business owners and traders who were approved by the Israeli military to allow in some commercial trucks.

But they were only allowed to sell in the central and southern parts of the Strip. They’re just allowing a trickle of these items and products into the northern part of the Strip.

Er staan zoveel huizen, kantoren en winkels in Nederland leeg dat alle inwoners van de stad Utrecht erin zouden kunnen wonen. Dit blijkt uit een berekening van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek en het journalistieke platform Pointer (KRO-NCRV).
In totaal staat er 17,8 miljoen vierkante meter aan panden structureel leeg, meldt het CBS. Er zit al zeker een jaar geen bewoner of huurder in. Ook wordt er geen of nauwelijks energie afgenomen in deze gebouwen.
Al die leegstand bij elkaar, is evenveel oppervlak als 200.000 standaard nieuwbouwappartementen. Dat zou genoeg plek bieden voor alle inwoners van Utrecht (377.000). Zonder te proppen, zegt het CBS erbij: zij hebben dan evenveel ruimte per persoon als stedelingen nu gemiddeld hebben.

Aid trucks are trickling in but are only limited to the central and southern parts of the Strip. We’re not seeing much in the north. There is a key factor limiting the entry of aid trucks into Gaza City: the destroyed infrastructure.

There are no roads here. For us, driving around it is very hard. It takes a long time simply because there are no roads left. The Israeli military has destroyed every essential storage warehouse, so even if aid trucks get in, it will be extremely difficult to store it.

The eastern side of the Strip is controlled by the Israeli army. Soldiers have moved to a line demarcated by the ceasefire. People are staying away from that area because it’s very dangerous with quadcopters, tanks and armoured vehicles deployed.

Earlier, people who tried to go to their homes in the east of Gaza City and in southern Khan Younis were shot and killed by Israeli troops. At least nine Palestinians were killed despite the ceasefire.

‘We are coming’: Aid activists plan to reach Gaza by Friday

A spokesperson on board the Conscience vessel has promised it will continue its course towards Gaza in an effort to break Israel’s blockade and reach the besieged Palestinian enclave by Friday.

“We are out here not only on the Conscience but also with eight other vessels from the Thousand Madleens organizations. We are just another wave of civilian vessels going to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade, siege and genocide on the Palestinian people,” Huwaida Arraf told reporters.

The Conscience is specifically dedicated to healthcare and media workers under fire in Gaza, she said.

“We have dozens of each on this boat. These two professions are targeted in Gaza,” Arraf said, adding that they’re “being killed, are being tortured” and “their families are being targeted”.

“And we are sailing here to say to the world that this must end. The world must rise up and ensure that it ends by sanctioning Israel.”

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned Israel’s detention of journalists, who were among hundreds of activists seized from vessels in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.

The Paris-based media watchdog said there were more than 20 foreign reporters on board the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail last month for Gaza, where the United Nations says famine is taking place.

The journalists were arrested between Wednesday and Thursday when the Israeli navy began intercepting the boats ferrying politicians and activists towards Gaza, RSF said. Vessels with more than 450 people on board had been prevented from reaching the Gaza Strip by the Israeli navy.

“Arresting journalists and preventing them from doing their work is a serious violation of the right to inform and be informed,” said Martin Roux, head of the group’s crisis desk.

“RSF condemns the illegal arrest of the news professionals who were on board these ships to cover a humanitarian operation of unprecedented scale.”"

The Hague police arrested 205 people at a Gaza-support protest at Den Haag Central Station on Thursday evening. According to the police, the protest had a grim atmosphere, and activists were guilty of “transgressive actions” that could “harm the interests of others.” One detainee is suspected of insulting the police and using violence against officers. One officer was injured.

For comparison, during violent far-right riots in The Hague on September 20, in which rioters set fire to police cars, blocked the A12 highway, sought confrontations with the riot police, and attacked political buildings, the police arrested 37 people.
