The next-alexandria domain will now reflect the next edition: Euler.

This MVP is the basis for printing, searching, interacting-with, and reading books on Nostr. They are now available for everyone on the planet, as a digital library stored on relays. Unlike with most digital libraries, the books are exportable as static files (we currently support PDF, HTML, EPUB, Markdown, and Asciidoc formats), but are stored dynamically: broken up into composable, replaceable, and cryptographically-signed sections.

Because we named this edition after Johannes Gutenberg, who invented moveable-type and spawned the art of book printing, we have followed in his footsteps: our first GC-Publishing (npub18cd…aztw) print was the Bible. To prove: * the performance of our system, * the necessity of the hierarchical 30040 index event type, * and the suitability of Nostr events for printing entire libraries,

we printed an edition of the largest Bible, breaking it down into an event for every verse.

Every single Bible verse can now be individually embedded, referenced, searched for, analyzed, commented-on, or highlighted, over Nostr's widely-distributed database, and with our Alexandria app.

We will soon be posting the road map for the Euler edition.

The #Alexandria publishing app has been spruced up a bit. The Getting Started page, About page, and Contact page were updated. The universal event publisher got a bug-fix. Musical ABC notation is now rendered and highlights and comments are visible in the reading view.

We are actively working on both the #GitRepublic 🛡server and the #Alexandria landscape
(Alex 📖, Wikistr 🔍, Jumble 🌲).

What we have accomplished, in the last month:
- ChipTuner (npub1qdj…fqm7) updated the server status page and revamped the build system. He has defined the Nostr-AUTH scheme for the git server and figured out a maximally-simple and smooth method for implementing it.
- nusa (npub1636…qpl4) revamped the style sheets and menus, giving Alex a more unified and modern look and feel.
- liminal 🦠 (npub1m3x…a5sf) added comments and highlights to publications and a progress bar to publishing.
- Silberengel (npub1l5s…gx9z) and MichaelJ (npub1wqf…qsyn) completed Phase 1 of the reading view and ToC revamp. (Michael will be completing Phase 2, as it's a bit more advanced.)
- Silberengel (npub1l5s…gx9z) implemented publication viewing and book-wikilinks in Jumble Imwald and Wikistr Imwald.
- Silberengel (npub1l5s…gx9z) implemented citation publishing and embedding in Jumble.
- Silberengel (npub1l5s…gx9z) added a download menu to Wikistr, so that publications can be exported to ADOC, HTML, EPUB, and PDF format.
- mleku (npub1fjq…leku) brought us the ability to define event-level rules in #Orly 🦉 relay and delivered some bug-fixes.
- cloud fodder (npub10np…tl5h) expanded the Relay Tools native Android app to handle publications and discussions.
- semisol (npub1226…grkj) honed the aggregator and search relays, which have been implemented in all clients as defaults.

We've been working on a number of projects, in the background, including a Nostr-based git HTTP server, and we've been considering our pricing model for them. We have received enough donations to reserve the git server, and ChipTuner (npub1qdj…fqm7) and finrod (npub1ecd…s735) are going to be launching the beta version of that #thoon. We are excited to use it, ourselves, as it's frustrating fighting other login methods. Nostr is simply less friction.

We are aiming for a base storage of 1 GB for an organization (the owner npub and the collaborator npubs it invites), with additional storage purchasable. 1 GB is more than most dev teams use, and we want to keep our running costs low. If it turns out to be too little, we will increase the baseline. It will be bundled together with a media and blossom server, and a subscription to theforest (we will credit you anything you have paid for theforest), as well as access to our other inhouse systems.

This is also just a fun way and easy way to help support our efforts, and to make sure your support requests get faster responses. The subscribers will be invited to help us Design Think our systems and applications. *We build with you and for you!*

We are also negotiating group discounts from other service providers, which will be offered to anyone on our NIP-05 list.

We will be controlling access to those servers, and to the other functionality we have planned, over the https://gitcitadel.nostr1.com relay and the gitcitadel.com NIP-05 list. That is a read-protected relay, unlike https://theforest.nostr1.com, and any Gitcitadel team members you see on there have paid for the access, themselves.

We at #GitCitadel are proud to announce that #Alexandria has basically stayed the same, despite our making major changes under the hood. 🎉

You might notice a slight difference, when loading large publications. It now loads as you scroll down the page, rather than loading all at once. This means that you can load really large and deep publications without your browser freezing up.

This was a major change in the architecture, by our Product Owner and lead Alex developer, MichaelJ (npub1wqf…qsyn), and was a prerequisite to a number of other changes. Development should move more quickly, now. Thank you for your patience.

The next iteration is coming

We're busy racing to the finish line, for the #Alexandria Gutenberg beta. Then we can get the bug hunt done, release v0.1.0, and immediately start producing the first iteration of the Euler (v0.2.0) edition.

While we continue to work on fixing the performance issues and smooth rendering on the Reading View, we've gone ahead and added some new features and apps, which will be rolled-out soon.

The biggest projects this iteration have been:

the HTTP API for the #Realy relay from mleku (npub1fjq…leku),

implementation of a publication tree structure by MichaelJ (npub1wqf…qsyn),

and the Great DevOps Migration of 2025 from the ever-industrious Mr. ChipTuner (npub1qdj…fqm7).

All are backend-y projects and have caused a major shift in process and product, on the development team's side, even if they're still largely invisible to users.

Another important, but invisible-to-you change is that finrod (npub1ecd…s735) has implemented the core bech32 functionality (and the associated tests) in C/C++, for the #Aedile NDK.

On the frontend:

nusa (npub1636…qpl4) is currently working on the blog-specific Reading View, which allows for multi-npub or topical blogging, by using the 30040 index as a "folder", joining the various 30041 articles into different blogs. She has also started experimenting with categorization and columns for the landing page.

Silberengel (npub1l5s…gx9z) revamped the product information pages, so that there is now a Contact page (including the ability to submit a Nostr issue) and an About page (with more product information, the build version displayed, and a live #GitCitadel feed).

We have also allowed for discrete headings (headers that aren't section headings, akin to the headers in Markdown). Discrete headings are formatted, but not added to the ToC and do not result in a section split by Asciidoc processors.

We have added OpenGraph metadata, so that hyperlinks to Alexandria publications, and other events, display prettily in other apps. And we fixed some bugs.

The Visualisation view has been updated and bug-fixed, to make the cards human-readable and closeable, and to add hyperlinks to the events to the card-titles.

We have added support for the display of individual wiki pages and the integration of them into 30040 publications. (This is an important feature for scientists and other nonfiction writers.)

We prettified the event json modal, so that it's easier to read and copy-paste out of.

The index card details have been expanded and the menus on the landing page have been revamped and expanded. Design and style has been improved, overall.

Project management is very busy

Our scientific adviser liminal 🦠 (npub1m3x…a5sf) is working on the Euler plans for integrating features important for medical researchers and other scientists, which have been put on the fast track.

We at #GitCitadel have spent this week pricing out remote servers and brainstorming; considering the most cost-effective, but still performant, way to implement a public #gitserver based upon Nostr. In order to help us front the rental fees and lower the price to individual npubs, we have begun a new https://Geyser.fund goal.

The resulting server will have multiple #gnostr implementations and tools on it. We are planning to begin with:
* the #GitRepublic API, that will make it possible to log in to git with your Nostr signer, and will trade out e-mail communication with Nostr notes,
* an HTTP-based git server (the first thing that will be going online, so that everyone can move or mirror their repos),
* a paid AUTH relay https://gitcitadel.nostr1.com (currently 5000 sats/month, to cover all the running costs, but we hope to bring that down dramatically, due to your donations),
* an #Alexandria instance focused on technical documentation and styled for the dev users,
* and an instance of https://GitWorkshop.dev that displays the repos on the server.

It's difficult to compete with a "free" public service, like GitHub or Codeberg, but we're hoping that tighter integration with Nostr will add some value to the developers using it, and for the public interested in browsing the PoW stored on it. Through the integration of Nostr and Lightning, we are leaning into the comfortable, Nostrized, friction-free logins, and will facilitate V4V payments for Nostr's hard-working devs.

We at #GitCitadel have spent this week pricing out remote servers and brainstorming; considering the most cost-effective, but still performant, way to implement a public #gitserver based upon Nostr. In order to help us front the rental fees and lower the price to individual npubs, we have begun a new https://Geyser.fund goal.

The resulting server will have multiple #gnostr implementations and tools on it. We are planning to begin with:
* the #GitRepublic API, that will make it possible to log in to git with your Nostr signer, and will trade out e-mail communication with Nostr notes,
* an HTTP-based git server (the first thing that will be going online, so that everyone can move or mirror their repos),
* a paid AUTH relay https://gitcitadel.nostr1.com (currently 5000 sats/month, to cover all the running costs, but we hope to bring that down dramatically, due to your donations),
* an #Alexandria instance focused on technical documentation and styled for the dev users,
* and an instance of https://GitWorkshop.dev that displays the repos on the server.

It's difficult to compete with a "free" public service, like GitHub or Codeberg, but we're hoping that tighter integration with Nostr will add some value to the developers using it, and for the public interested in browsing the PoW stored on it. Through the integration of Nostr and Lightning, we are leaning into the comfortable, Nostrized, friction-free logins, and will facilitate V4V payments for Nostr's hard-working devs.

Hello. We have a new feature implemented, in #Alexandria, which might interest some of you.

We have revamped and expanded the index card menu. You now have the ability to display publication details (index metadata) on the cards, including book summaries, ISBNs, and links to the npub profile pages of the publishing npub and the author. (If the author has a npub and is referenced in the 'p' tag, as with Gigi (npub1der…xzpc)'s book, below.)

This allows for publisher and author to share in the credit and the zaps, and to both be notified of interactions with the index.

You also have the ability to open an original URL-source of the publication (usually to a web page, PDF, LaTeX file etc.), even if the publication is also available in event form. Currently, it opens outside the app.

This opens up Alexandria to being a true library catalog of all publications, even those under copyright or where there is no digital version readily available. They can be referenced and interacted with, through the index cards, in a manner similar to GoodReads or other "book review" sites.

This will become more apparent, once we add things like kind 1111 comments, to the index events. For now, we're still revamping the parser and the table of contents, but they should be replaced #thoon. Thank you for your patience and support, while we rebuild, and may you have a good evening.

As a project that is run by Nostriches for Nostriches, we at #GitCitadel are proud of our humble, zap-based financing, especially over our Geyserfund (https://geyser.fund/project/gitcitadel). It's been mildly painful, and we've had to learn to pinch each sat until it cries for mercy. But it has definitely been the right source of funding for a project in this incubation stage, where we tentatively brood and hatch out our first baby, Project #Alexandria.

HOWEVER,

we regularly receive questions about how we plan on having a more sustainable source of funding, and one of our main ideas, is to cover the costs of our relays with a relay subscription that cloud fodder (npub10np…tl5h) is managing for us. The current subscription of 300 sats/month (which some of you have been grandfathered into), will get you write-access to the relay. It is a great help for us, if you actively subscribe to wss://theforest.nostr1.com in your client, and include it in your outboxes and inboxes.

This access will become interesting soon, once the publishing feature is opened up, and even more interesting, once we get comments, highlights etc. going. Alexandria is a community-first client, and theforest is our community relay for the https://next-alexandria.gitcitadel.eu instance, so anything written to that relay will receive pride-of-place in the client. Because we know and trust our own community members, we're displaying "the full global", so this relay is a great way to immediately make contact with other npubs, even if you are new to Nostr.

We are also working on the ability to offer premium relay subscriptions, and we'll announce those, once we get the features going that they will unlock.

GitCitadel Development Operations

We, at GitCitadel, have been updating, moving, and rearranging our servers, for quite some time. As a rather large, complex, sprawling project, we have the infrastructure setup to match, so we've decided to give you all a quick run-down of what we are doing behind-the-scenes.

Supplier Coordination

Our first task, this week, was figuring out who would host what where. We have four different locations, where our infra is stored and managed, including two locations from our suppliers. We got that straightened out, quickly, and it's all slowly coming together and being connected and networked. Exciting to watch our DevOps landscape evolve and all of the knowledge-transfer that the interactions provide.

OneDev Implementation

Our biggest internal infra project this week was the migration of all of our issues from Jira, build scripts from Jenkins, and repos from GitHub to a self-hosted OneDev instance. In the future, all of our internal build, test, issue, patch/PR, etc. effort will take place there. We also have a separate repo there for communicating with external developers and suppliers.

Our team's GitHub projects will be demoted to mirrors and a place for external devs to PR to. Public issues and patches will continue to be managed over our self-hosted GitWorkshop instance.

We're especially glad to finally escape the GitHub Gulag, and avoid being bled dry by Jira fees, without having to give up the important features that we've come to know and love. So, yay!

Next Infrasteps

Automated Testing

Now, that we have everything tied up in one, neat, backed-up package, we can finally move on to the nitty-gritty and the dirty work. So, we're rolling up our sleeves and writing the Selenium smoke test for our Alexandria client. We'll be running that in Docker containers containing different "typical Nostr" images, such as Chrome browser with Nostr Connect signing extension, or Firefox browser with Nos2x-fox extension. Once we get the Nsec Bunker and Amber logins going, we'll add test cases and images for them, as well. (Yes, we can do Bunker. I hope you are in awe at our powers).

We are also designing an automated infrastructure test, that will simply rattle through all the various internal and external websites and relays, to make sure that everything is still online and responsive.

After that, a Gherkin-based Behave feature test for Alexandria is planned, so that we can prevent regression of completed functionality, from one release to the next.

The Gherkin scenarios are written and attached to our stories before development begins (we use acceptance tests as requirements), a manual test-execution is then completed, in order to set the story to Done. These completed scenarios will be automated, following each release, with the resulting script linked to from the origin story.

Automated Builds

As the crowning glory of every DevOps tool chain stands the build automation. This is where everything gets tied together, straightened out, configured, tested, measured, and -- if everything passes the quality gates -- released. I don't have to tell you how much time developers spend staring at the build process display, praying that it all goes through and they can celebrate a Green Wave.

We are currently designing the various builds, but the ones we have defined for the Alexandria client will be a continuous delivery pipeline, like so:

This will make it easier for us to work and collaborate asynchronously and without unnecessary delays.

Expanding the Status Page

And, finally, we get to the point of all of this busyness: reporting.

We are going to have beautiful reports, and we are going to post them online, on our status page. We will use bots, to inform Nostriches of the current status of our systems, so go ahead and follow our GitCitadel DevOps npub, to make sure you don't miss out on the IT action.

Building on stone

All in all, we're really happy with the way things are humming along, now, and the steady increase in our productivity, as all the foundational work we've put in starts to pay off. It's getting easier and easier to add new team members, repos, or features/fixes, so we should be able to scale up and out from here. Our GitCitadel is built on a firm foundation.

We are glad to inform you, that we have gotten some of our formatting fixed and added some small features.

Here you can see, how we have added a horizontal scroll bar to verbatim quote fields. This doesn't completely solve the left-margin problem, on mobile, but it keeps the information from running off the page.

We have added the ability to view the version/edition on the index card, if it is available. If the author tag is not available, we complete the field with "unknown".

Here you can see two formatting changes:
1. The hyperlinks are now underlined.
2. We have begun implementing type-driven formatting. For "type" tag filled with the word "book" (our default), the first capital letter of every chapter is enlarged. For all other types (such as here, with type="research"), that is not the case.

In other good news, we are delighted to have a second, experienced, full-stack developer. He will be focusing on frontend development, intelligent parsing for uploads, and maintenance/bug-fixing. We hope he will free up our main developer for more performance-enhancing improvements.

We have also moved our project documentation and a collection of our favorite articles to #Alexandria.

#Alexandria Next update!

This one adds proper support for user sign-in.

Currently, we only support sign-in via a NIP-07 browser extension. There's a button that appears when you hover over the user profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Once the sign-in is complete, a few things happen:
- Your profile photo appears in the user profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Hovering over your profile photo reveals your username and your display name.
- Your inbox and outbox relay lists are read by the app to be used later.

When you've signed in, you'll also notice a new drop-down menu appears at the top of the home page feed. This lets you switch between viewing publications on Alexandria's default relay (wss://thecitadel.nostr1.com) or on your personal relay list.

Additionally, to reduce load times, Alexandria loads only 16 publications at a time. A "show more" button at the bottom will tell the app to go get the next 16. Right now, it's possible to get to the end of the feed, but that will quickly change as more publications are uploaded to the relays!

We at GitCitadel (npub1s3h…75wz) have reached another milestone, on our way to #Alexandria v 0.1.0 (Gutenberg edition).

We have printed the entire Bible using 30040/30041 notes and made them available for you to peruse, using a pre-release of our Nostr client. The books are broken down by chapter. Breakdowns by verse will be delivered with the beta release. In addition, we have printed "Jane Eyre", so that you get some idea of how quickly a full-length novel can load. We are working on making it faster, with pagination, but this is already surprisingly quick.

You can't yet use the client to upload books (please use the e-book CLI, for that), and it's all a bit buggy and wonky, but we have already implemented a first pass at the Visualization page.
