Keir #Starmer's lack of integrity is a matter of historical record. The public knows about Starmer's broken 2020 election promises, his claim and later denial of friendship with #Corbyn, and his lies about international law. Opinion polls find that "liar" is the word most associated with Keir Starmer.

Sad to watch English commentators talking of referendums as a bad idea, without qualifying the claim.

Ireland has held 46 referendums since 1937. They mostly work very well.

So if referendums work badly in England, that's not a referendums problem. It's an England problem.

Ireland has learnt a lot about conducting referendums. But before the 2016 referendum, the British govt didn't even ask for advice.

British failure doesn't make democracy a bad idea.

"#Freedom" was a big part of the rhetoric of capitalist ideologues such as Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman.

But the mendacity of that rhetoric was repeatedly demonstrated by their opposition to rights to resist capital, e.g. through trade unions. And Freedman's hypocrisy is starkly illustrated by his close association with Pinochet's brutal dictatorship in Chile. "Los Chicago Boys" replied on repressive military rule to crush popular resistance to #neoliberalism.

So #JimGavin of #FiannaFail has withdrawn from the #Aras25 election. No surprise, after his carcrash on the #RTÉ debate.

But AFAIK, it's too late to take Jim's name off the ballot paper, let alone for FF to choose a replacement. So he will still get some votes, leaving Fianna Fáil with a derisory tallyfor the history books.

#SimonHarris's statement didn't go as far as I wanted. He didn't label Israel's actions as piracy, and he didn't even mention that the abducted include a member of the Oireachtas: Senator Chris Andrews.

But it's all a big contrast to the silence of #YvetteCopper, the UK's #ForeignSecretary. Cooper has not made any statement in her own name, even in writing.

Brits can sleep safely tonight, after the heroic work of the Metropolitan Police. The Reverend Sue Parfitt, 83, a retired priest, was arrested in Parliament Square for holding a sign which read:

“I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”

Under British law, this now puts her in the same category as an ISIS or Al-Qaeda terrorist. The courts may impose a prison sentence of up to 14 years, to protect the public against the existential threat posed by this very dangerous woman.
