Just spotted this, right on my doorstep. Sunday 28 June for a trail half marathon (or 10k) taking in Mount Harry, Blackcap and Plumpton Ridge, with views down to Brighton and north over the Weald. Sounds fabulous and it actually runs most of my personal favourite half route backwards. #running #Brighton #SouthDowns

Down to the cliffs with Soph to greet the New Year. Pretty chilly in the wind, with the sky a real mix between cloudless blue in the north and faint pinks to the south-east. Really feeling my extra weight and drop-off of stamina at the moment, but that will improve, particularly on these companionable runs. Two months until #Brighton Half. #running

A very pleasant 10km down to Rottingdean and back up the eastern side. Double the distance I had planned but the skies are blue, with not much wind and great temperature. I got to the loop back point and remembered that there is supposed to be a second war memorial in a field, so I tried to find it, as it isn’t currently marked in #OpenStreetMap. I’m sure I got right next to it, but it is hidden in a copse with a locked gate and rusty bars preventing access. Another day then! #running

Not so much misty as ground level rain clouds as Soph and I ran an early 8km loop around #Brighton racecourse. Going out was dryish but we got mizzled on the way back, which always makes my eyes sting for some reason. The black coffee and pain au raisin afterwards was comforting. #running

Trouble at t’ Mill. Of the 183† times I’ve run past Beacon Mill, this is the first time I’ve seen workmen. I didn’t stop to ask them whether they were bringing it back into action 😁 Very warm and still, close air this morning. Looking forward to a spectacular thunderstorm overnight to clear the atmosphere. Hoary stocks and thistles covering the cliff tops. The beautiful, blue love-in-a-mist is along the secret passage to my house.

This morning’s 10 km took me to Kingston Ridge, which is a favourite spot from which to view the sunrise (if I’d been there 3 hours earlier 😁) I took a photo under overcast, windy skies. Ashcombe windmill is always in shot but it wasn’t until I zoomed in that I realised where Lewes Castle was. I’ve always been confused by the geography of Lewes because I haven’t walked around it often, but I simply had no idea that the castle was so visible. #Lewes #running

Vendetta: Burnished Blossom. What a beautiful morning for a 13.5km (285 m EG) trail run around the nearest hills of the South Downs. The hawthorn has kicked into high gear, the farmer has planted two fields with phacelia, turning them purple, edged with deep pink thistles. Sainfoin is showing more delicate pinks in the nature reserve, and I was surrounded by wall brown butterflies all the way round. Just gorgeous. #running #SouthDowns #Brighton

It’s a bit misty out there this morning but a perfect temperature, so we burned the ground (well, relatively) around Escher’s Eleven this morning. 11.3 km in 58 minutes, with 180 m elevation. I’m hoping someone can identify the plant for me, spotted on the verge by East #Brighton golf course. #running

I can’t believe it’s nearly 2025 and I’m still tripping up over some aspects of UTF-8 in #Perl. Bizarrely, I just had to use the non-UTF8 functions in JSON.pm, which felt odd, but then I realised I was pumping it through a UTF-8-encoded stdout and double encoding. Time to put some work into updating my own Perl-and-UTF8 cribsheet to cover CLI, MySQL connections, JSON and web I/O on two different OS and shells. Thank goodness for sloe gin.

Today dawned bright and clear, so I slipped out of bed at 5.15am and ran one of my favourite routes. I have now been #running for 3½ years and this morning completed my 40th half marathon. The South Downs never cease to inspire me, to provide me with thinking time, and to rejuvenate me. I am so lucky to have this beautiful landscape and the wildlife on my doorstep. #Brighton #Lewes
