I think for me it's because Mastodon is a little more intimate that I like it more.

I'm a big proponent of Dunbar's number (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar's_number) and deliberately follow around 150 or so people on whatever my social media of choice happens to be. I like that I know people here instead of just having passing comments to fly-by-nights.

I don't know about the hierarchy of bestness between Twitter, Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon. I think Mastodon is fundamentally the *right* approach though - no CEO, no business plan, no algorithm, no adverts, just people running their own little communities.

...but a community requires participation. Interaction, not broadcast. I think that's tough for some people who just want to be the central character.

Sadly for many users Mastodon is a second- or third-tier platform. I see I lot of people I like who have set scripts to repost here what they post elsewhere and never really engage here at all. To them it's just another broadcast medium, which is sad.

Kottke's a good example. I like their work; there's no engagement or responses or replying here at all. It's just a feed from their blog.
