cross-posted from: https://retrolemmy.com/post/41731951

> Hi,
>
> A little while back we introduced old.retrolemmy.com. This is not really interesting on its own, but I wondered if we could also get it running on Retrofed. And [this was successful by way of a proxy](https://retrolemmy.com/post/41465047). The cool side effect the proxy had is that lemmy-only apps now also work if you enter old.retrofed.com in your preferred app.
>
> This made the idea of preservation come up, and Die4Ever (npub1fvm…u4zm) wondered if the proxy could be modified to also work on lemmybb and translate to older API versions. And after a while I got forum.retrolemmy.com to work with lemmybb - an old software for lemmy last updated 3 years ago - that makes the fediverse look and work like an old phpbb forum of older days. Most functions are working and functioning as intended, but there can still be some bugs here and there. Some we could probably fix, but some can also be attributed to the older software and it's quirks.
>
> If you notice any bugs, you can message me, or reply here.
>
> Also, this project got pretty big, but if you want to use it yourself, its at [Github](https://github.com/DaDosDude/LemmyBeProxy). It has full 0.17, limited 0.18 and full 0.19 support for the frontend, and lemmy(current) or piefed for the backend.
>
> This thread is posted via forum.retrolemmy.com
>
>
> Edit: Known limitations:
> - No 2fa. As this was only added in lemmy version 0.18.x
> - No last reply date/time. This can be enabled, but will call a ton of API calls for every page load, making the site unusable.
> - 500: Internal Server Error -There is a real, pre-existing bug in lemmyBB's own code, where it makes a direct fetch, but doesnt handle a missing header gracefully. Unfortunately unfixable without changing the lemmyBB code (and that's against the idea of this project)
> - Old posts are at the top instead of new ones - This is because the posts are stickied in the community, making them always be on top. This is especially visible in the "General" community. The new posts are under the stickied posts.

But that recognition has not always translated into space for Indigenous leaders in climate negotiations, [access to climate resilience funding](https://grist.org/indigenous/indigenous-peoples-bear-the-brunt-of-climate-change-and-get-almost-none-of-the-money-to-fight-it/), or [enforcement](https://grist.org/indigenous/at-the-un-indigenous-leaders-tackle-how-to-enforce-global-climate-court-rulings/) of human rights standards.
>
> That has been the case for decades. But the problems do not stop there. New research shows that approach overlooks the key role that Indigenous knowledge and culture can play in mitigating climate change. It also reveals a dangerous misconception that has taken hold in global climate discussions: the idea that Indigenous lands are so rich because they are remote or sparsely populated.
>
> Nothing could be further from the truth. The health of Indigenous lands and their ability to store vast quantities of carbon stem from the stewardship of the people who inhabit them.
>
> That’s the finding of [research](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41599-026-07434-2) from Conservation International, which shows that traditional knowledge, community protocol, and Indigenous culture play a direct role in protecting forests, wildlife, and the environment. Sushma Shrestha, who is Indigenous Newar from Nepal and the study’s lead author, said the research comes at a critical time.
>
> “All of humanity relies on everything that Indigenous peoples have to contribute and offer in terms of their lands, in terms of carbon storage, in terms of biodiversity conservation,” she said.
>
> The study, released as a narrative report and a peer-reviewed study, explores how Indigenous knowledge and practices benefit the planet. It also found that all 43 of the surveyed communities are experiencing drought, extreme weather, and other adverse impacts from climate change. More than half are affected by extractive industries like mining and logging.
>
> Researchers interviewed 49 Indigenous leaders from six continents about how they steward their land, which ranged from the Amazon rainforest to East African savannas and Pacific Islands. They found that traditional management practices like avoiding overfishing, maintaining sacred spaces, watching for fires and other threats, and direct resistance against extraction contribute to the remarkable health of Indigenous territory. Ninety-six percent of respondents said they had land set aside for special uses, like spiritual practices, that also benefit the environment by protecting those spaces and ecosystems. Shrestha stressed that although each Indigenous community is distinct, there are shared lessons the entire world can learn from.
>
> “It’s a time where all hands need to be on deck,” Shrestha said. “And collectively, actions need to be taken, and indigenous peoples have been doing this on their own for a very long time.”
>
> The study builds on years of [research](https://amazonfrontlines.org/chronicles/new-studies-reaffirm-indigenous-led-conservation-as-key-in-tackling-biodiversity-and-climate-crisis/) that shows, among other things, that the world’s healthiest forests are on Indigenous lands and conservation efforts are more effective when they incorporate Indigenous autonomy and decision-making at every step.
>
> Read Next
>
> [![A woman with intricate tattoos and red face paint stares directly into the camera with protest signs behind her]( )](https://grist.org/indigenous/the-key-to-better-climate-outcomes-respecting-indigenous-land-rights-and-autonomy/)
>
> [The key to better climate outcomes? Respecting Indigenous land rights and autonomy.](https://grist.org/indigenous/the-key-to-better-climate-outcomes-respecting-indigenous-land-rights-and-autonomy/)
>
> [Anita Hofschneider](https://grist.org/author/anita-hofschneider/)
>
> Drought and extreme weather were the top climate impacts cited, but 61 percent of those interviewed also called mining, commercial agriculture, logging, and other incursions serious concerns. These issues threaten to disrupt land stewardship practices that have endured for millennia. To help mitigate these challenges, Indigenous peoples are asking for mitigation and resilience funding, legal advice for protecting their territories, and recognition of national and international land rights.
>
> “Indigenous Peoples’ Knowledge cannot exist without Indigenous Peoples or without the ecosystems where we live,” Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, who is Indigenous Mbororo from Chad and a former chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, wrote in a forward to the report. “To protect our knowledge, there is an urgent need to recognize us, and our rights and lands must be secured.”
>
> Respondents from a wide range of countries, including Bolivia, Mexico, and the Philippines, mentioned using community monitoring or patrols to protect their land from outsiders and violations of traditional protocol. Several also called for stronger legal protections to protect their lands from being sold or developed.
>
> Shrestha, Ibrahim, and other Indigenous experts said that as much as Indigenous peoples are asking for help, they are also urging the world to learn from them. The Kichwa people in Ecuador, for example, restrict hunting of female tapirs and other animals to help slow population decline. The Tacana people in Bolivia, among others, do not permit tree clearing along rivers, which helps maintain water quality and prevent erosion. The list goes on, and could help the rest of the world mitigate climate change and protect the environment.
>
> “It is my hope the voices of the sisters and brothers from all over the world reflected in this report trigger the action we need for the planet we all want, the action we need for Indigenous Peoples Knowledge to flourish, and honor our grandparents and our children that are yet to come,” Ibrahim said.
>
> Given the scale of the threats facing the world and the urgency with which they must be addressed, Shrestha said that policy changes and enforcement of Indigenous land rights is more important than ever. She also stressed that these actions will benefit the entire world. “One thing that everybody can do, whether that is at the national level, or at the global level, is to really secure indigenous peoples’ rights to lands,” she said.
>
> This story was originally published by [Grist](https://grist.org/) with the headline [Indigenous cultural practices are a climate solution, report finds](https://grist.org/indigenous/indigenous-cultural-practices-are-a-climate-solution-report-finds/) on Jun 24, 2026.
>
> ---
>
> **From [Grist](https://grist.org/feed) via [This RSS Feed](https://grist.org/feed).**

      > The new Solutions Desk will focus on precisely these kinds of stories. It will examine community-led conservation initiatives, innovative financing mechanisms, emerging technologies, and policy approaches that show measurable results. It will work closely with journalists and researchers across the regions where Mongabay reports, ensuring that the people closest to these efforts help tell the story.

> Importantly, this desk does not replace investigative reporting or coverage of environmental harm. Those remain central to our mission. Solutions journalism complements that work. Exposing wrongdoing helps hold systems accountable. Documenting effective responses helps show how those systems might change.

Speaking for the US many populated arid areas are completely unsustainable as population centers (*ironically also where most people in the US have been moving for awhile now*), especially because water resources haven't been managed rationally in many arid areas. This story will absolutely be a global one though, see Tehran for one massive example, Lake Mead for another.

      > The quiet policy shift allows Ukraine to target Russian sites using Western missiles that rely on American targeting data. The move follows the transfer of strike-approval authority from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to US European Command chief Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who also serves as NATO’s top commander.

> US officials now expect Ukraine to conduct more cross-border operations using Storm Shadows, which can reach targets more than 180 miles away.

...

> While the move doesn’t dramatically change the battlefield, it restores the flexibility Kyiv lost when the Pentagon last year imposed a review system for strikes on Russian territory. That restriction effectively paused attacks using any Western-supplied missiles linked to US targeting systems.

Glad Hegseth has a little less on his plate, it must be hard making quick military decisions with huge consequences when you are drunk all the time.

> Senator Reed was made aware that this individual was interviewed by the FBI in December 2024 as part of the background investigation on Mr. Hegseth, but details of this testimony did not appear to have been included in the final background check briefing provided by the Trump Transition Team in January. Accordingly, Senator Reed directly requested this individual recount the testimony that she had provided to the FBI.

...

> “As I have said for months, the reports of Mr. Hegseth’s history of alleged sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and public misconduct necessitate an exhaustive background investigation. I have been concerned that the background check process has been inadequate, and this affidavit confirms that fact.

https://www.reed.senate.gov/news/releases/reed-statement-on-abuse-allegations-against-pete-hegseth

If I was Ukrainian, I would be damn happy Kegseth isn't involved in the direct strike approval process now, the guy is a complete loser hack with no ability to do anything but bloviate on camera about wokeness or whatever nonsense the conservative bandwagon is obsessed with lately. He is a fundamentally weak and unserious character and was likely endangering Ukraine even in the rare instances he might have been genuinely trying to help.

Like... say what you will about South Park writers, you cannot deny that they aren't smart, reactive to changing cultural realities and willing to say it how the writers think it is... and Trump is absolutely none of those things (and he is only getting more out of touch as he deteriorates mentally).

This is like watching a nature documentary where a bee sees one of those parasite wasps and bravely tries to intimidate it away and you are like "*oof... this is going to end realllll bad for you buddy*" as you listen to the narrator describe how the parasitic wasp will inject its eggs into the bee to use as an incubator.

:)

I mean, this is embarassing for Trump and the people around him at the basic level that they clearly don't actually understand South Park isn't really leftist, or at least it isn't reflective of the vast majority of leftism in the US now. South Park is its own thing and it has frequently pissed of the left as much as the right, that is kind of the point of the show?

*facepalm*
