In a post that included some thoughts on Kpop idol footwear, I mentioned how much I disliked "the ugly overgrown foot look".

This look, I'm sad to say, has recently been sported by one of my favourite idols, Eunha, who is standing winking on the right.

What to my eyes is a less than lovely shoe style is, I suspect, one to which Eunha herself is actually partial. She quite often wears boots and shoes like this; although no doubt height equalization has something to do with the choice, Eunha probably enjoys enough seniority as an idol to be able to pick and choose, or at least exercise a veto, when it comes to styling. She could something more elegant.

She doesn't always put such horrors on her feet. I know that there have been some more graceful shoes in some recent stages, but...

Those of us who think about politics and history using time spans longer than three months may well be tiring of the current dubbing of the Trump regime's violent intervention in Venezuela as a "success".

We do not yet know what the medium and long term consequences of Trump's actions will be for Venezuela, the region, or for Latin America in general.

We do know that the readiness of both Trump and of most of the US media to chalk this up as an unqualified Trump victory reveals the depth of contempt for Latin America prevailing in the current ruling circles of the USA.

This abstention has been a trial for me recently, as I loved "Super Obvious", their most recent comeback, and thought some of the outfits they wore for the music shows were A+.

I've had had an easier time not boosting the B side. Besides not liking the song as much as 'Super Obvious", I feel my British English ears assaulted by the title "Pung", which sounds like a portmanteau word composed of "pong" and "dung".

When US citizens look at what the Trump regime is doing, may of them protest with the words "This is not who we are."

Almost always this provokes the response of ""But yes, it is exactly who you are - just look at the history of US oppression and aggression!"

I don't think this is a constructive response, in spite of the truth of so many of these ugly currents having coursed through so much of US history.

The history of the US is as multifaceted as the history of any other country, and that history incorporates important traditions of support for freedom, democracy, and liberation from oppression.

Support for a less destructive USA is more likely to come from appealing to Americans' better instincts and histories than scolding them for the failings of their forebears.

I don't post my views on every new Kpop release I hear, but I will note that neither RESCENE -- Busy Boy nor H1-KEY -- To My First Love have really landed with me.

I have been a keen supporter of RESCENE in the past, so I was thrilled when I saw this unheralded release, but what I heard disappointed me. Perhaps "Busy Boy" will grow on me -- or perhaps not. I was not too happy to read that the release has something to with blockchains, which I associate with crypto awfulness.

"To My First Love" ought to be my cup of tea; it continues the vigorous rock of "Good For You" and this style is perhaps a little musical callback to GFriend's rock sound, to complement the visual references to the GFriend "Rough" MV. Yet it didn't grab me and the chorus evaporated from my memory as soon as the MV finished.

So that's this week's dose of Kpop disappointment. Yet my feelings of anticlimax will be as nothing compared to what some BTS fans* will experience if "Arirang" does not live up to expectations, because those expectations are so much higher and the sense of emotional connection with the group so much deeper than anything I feel about either RESCENE or H1-KEY.

Are BTS fans here in the Fediverse engaging in expectation management? What are your hopes and fears?

* I write "BTS fans" rather than ARMY because I am never quite sure how the latter term works grammatically.

I've just been writing about "Vertigo: The Rise and Fall of Weimar Germany" by Harald Jähnner.

One author discussed there is Helmuth Plessner, with a focus on his 1924 "Grenzen der Gemeinschaft" (Limits of Community).

Katja Haustein wrote about Plessner in a TLS review (24/4/20) of his "Political Anthropology":

>>In Political Anthropology (Macht und menschliche Natur), written in 1931, Plessner discusses the anthropological origins of the human tendency to give in to authoritarian forms of government. Closely linked to his earlier and more accessible essay, The Limits of Community (1924), the book reads as a passionate warning against the rise of social and political radicalism that so exhausted the Weimar Republic. Much of Plessner's argument is based on what Richard Sennett has called the "tyrannies of intimacy". Plessner claimed that the central problem of modern subjectivity was not a growing distance between individuals, but, on the contrary, its disappearance. He curbed widespread expectations that promote politicized conceptions of community (Gemeinschaft) as a space in which alienation would dissolve. I've recently read "Vertigo: The Rise and Fall of Weimar Germany" by Harald Jähner.

Specialists with a good knowledge of the political history of interwar Germany will probably agree with the criticisms of leading historian Richard Evans in his 29/11/ 24 TLS review, in which he notes the failure of the book to address important aspects of the republic's politics such as the nature of the constitution.

Evans goes on to criticise "Vertigo" as being overly focused on Berlin and its culture of modernity and its neglect of rural and small town Germany.

For a cultural history, though, this emphasis on Berlin is justified, because that metropolis was offering novel aspirations, norms, and ways of living for the country as a whole, even if the reaction to that agenda in much of rural Germany was one of suspicion, resentment, and finally hatred. One rural commentator Jähner quotes noted with bitterness the exodus of women to the city, "the mass grave of the German people", attracted as they were by "greed, by pleasure seeking, by hollow noise in every area of life, by noisy oriental Jewish nonsense in state politics, department stores and theatres."

I would guess that the these seductive possibilities were made known throughout the German speaking world by the mostly Berlin based media of cinema and the illustrated press. Even if the overwhelming majority of Germans neither actively participated in the new forms of art and entertainment flowering in Berlin nor experimented with new metropolitan practices and presentations in sex and gender, the very existence of this new culture could not do other than transform cultures beyond the metropolis, even if only by introducing within them a self-conscious note of antiurban antimodernity.

Jähner, a journalist, has a good feel for both aspects of everyday life that might pass unnoticed by too many historians, such as the yoyo craze of 1932, and also for the disparate and sometimes internally contradictory emotions, moods, and feelings underlying the republic's culture.

Although "Vertigo" is neither comprehensive nor unquestionable in its treatment of Weimar Germany , it is a rich and thoroughly readable resource for non-Germanists like me, and notable for its determination to treat the culture of the republic as worthy of examination and perhaps celebration in its own right, as opposed to being merely an interlude leading to the advent of the Third Reich.

MADEIN -- Nagomi

After a good deal of internal debate, I decided not to post MADEIN -- Super Obvious.

Although the song interests me for various reasons, I was mindful of the boycott a group of fans have announced following former member Gaeun telling of her being sexually assaulted by a senior executive at the agency.

The boycott seems to have been largely ineffectual, as the group seems to be getting decent figures on Spotify and YouTube. I don't know about their album sales, but I do know that they have a sizeable Japanese following who seem either unaware or just heedless of the calls for boycott.

I did think about posting a music show stage which maybe half a dozen people would watch and balanced the pleasure that post might provide me and one or two people here against the surely negligible benefit the post would provide for the bad actor at the agency.

But then I interrupted these utilitarian calculations by imagining what it would be like if Gaeun were sitting here with me. Wouldn't she feel hurt and betrayed if I pressed the post button?

So eventually I have decided not to post the video, but still feel frustrated all the same.

In addition, another part of me is thinking that my spending time and energy agonizing over a Kpop post on Mastodon is remiss in itself when I have all sorts of other and surely more important obligations to meet.

On the other hand....

The pictured member Nagomi was born in London. She left the city when she was three, but I think might still have family connections there. She admires Eunha, so that's a thumbs up from me, and she deserves another for looking so pretty here with her blonde bob.

I recently finished reading Richard Wollheim's "Painting As An Art".

I found much of it stimulating in the close attention paid to particular pictures and thought provoking with regard to his theory of "seeing in" as the way to understand our perception of paintings.

On the other hand, his use of psychoanalytic theory left me with questions.

Surprisingly, his use of this theory reminded of some recent reading of mine in evolutionary psychology. Both Wollheim and the evolutionary psychologists stress the significance of a common human nature and are inclined to down play the importance of systems of symbols or culture in general.

I do think that a substantive concept of human nature makes sense, and I am open to the possibility of evolutionary psychology and psychoanalytical theory contributing to an understanding of an understanding of human nature.

Altogether less agreeable to me is the tendency of these theories to smuggle in a social ontology in which culture is merely the creation of atomized individuals. One can believe in the evolved nature of the mind and allow for the possibility of certain kinds of psychic forces at work in the individual without denying the importance, still less the existence, of social facts. Thinking about languages as at once learned and used by individuals but also existing as entities external to those individuals is helpful here.

As I mentioned in a post I wrote a few minutes ago, Richard Wollheim's "Painting as an Art" has gripped me because it invites the reader to join the author in looking at pictures closely. His obituary mentions his own method as he applied it in galleries:

I don't think that it's just K-bias on my part that makes me pick out Audrey Nuna's outfit as the best of the 2026 Grammy looks.

As well as being visually engaging, it si also, as Nuna notes, a tribute to her family's work in the garment industry and with Thom Browne in particular.

I found the look pleasantly reminiscent of synthetic cubism. I don't think this was intentional though....

I'm inclined to think of Freud and Marx as standing in the same relation to the human sciences as Boyle and Kepler do to the natural; important pioneers, whose path breaking insights were also tangled up in ideas that have been rightly discarded.

James Baldwin's "Giovanni's Room" impressed me both for its exploration of love, sex, and sexual identity and for the skill with which the author has the narrative unfold; I was gripped from beginning to end.

Although the protagonist is white, I know that some critics believe that the theme of race is obliquely present by virtue of the salience of various kinds of minority identity throughout the novel.

Quite aside from it being a "good read", I would recommend it to anybody interested in the literary treatment of bisexuality.

Expatriation also figures as an important theme. These words hit home with this migrant:

>> You don't have a home until you leave it and then, when you have left it, you never can go back. <<

"Home", of course, can be more than a geographical location.

The two novels of Orwell I haven't read are "A Clergyman's Daughter" and "Coming Up for Air".

The former incorporates Orwell's supposedly unsuccessful stab at modernist literary technique; I'm curious to see if it really is a failure.

I know little about the latter, but both the completist and the cultural historian within me want to polish it off anyway.

"Burmese Days" is excellent, and should be pressed into the hands of Neil Ferguson fans and other right wingers inclined to wax lyrical about the British empire.

At some point in the future, I'll post my thoughts on "1984'".

Comstock's rebellion, like that of Winston Smith a decade later, ultimately fails.

In addition to being struck by the parallels between Comstock's life under British capitalism in the 30's and Smith's under Ingsoc in Airstrip One, I was also impressed by Orwell's sharp descriptions of the indignities of genteel poverty.

I read some of Baldwin's essays a while ago, but I'm a mite embarrassed to say that I have only just finished my first Baldwin novel, "Go Tell It on the Mountain".

Did I love it? No.

Did I admire it? Yes, there is some powerful writing there. I was particularly impressed by Baldwin';s ability to encompass both African American vernacular and elevated biblical cadences without ever descending into hokiness. The psychological insight and narrative organization shown in the account of Esther's liaison with Gabriel struck me as brilliant.

The book also interested me as a document of midcentury US culture -- a social history approach that I'm sure Baldwin would have despised as reductive and unliterary!

I wonder if I might enjoy "Giovanni's Room" more, in part because I want to explore sexual rather than spiritual identity.

You might have the impression from the thread I've just posted on Emily Herring's "Herald of a Restless World: How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People" that I neither enjoyed nor profited from the book.

That impression would be mistaken, because I both learned from it and thoroughly enjoyed it as a well written work of history, even if I do not share Herring's esteem for Bergson as a philosopher.

She is especially strong on showing how the Belle Epoque acclaim for Bergson represented a yearning for the re-enchantment of a world now mechanized and soulless. She is also acute in her observation of the split between Bergson the solitary philosopher and Bergson the academic networker, the misogyny in his contemporaries' accounts of his popularity, and the gap that oipened between Bergson the man and Bergsonism the movement.

So I would recommend "Herald of a Restless World", not for what it might provide for the future of philosophy, but for what it tells us of the past of modernity.

I've just finished Emily Herring's "Herald of a Restless World: How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People", which the author hope will inspire a Bergson revival.

I doubt that any such revival is in the offing. Consider the three most important terms of Bergson's philosophy:

-- Élan vital. Bergson came up with this in his 1907 "Creative Evolution" to name a force that he thought of as driving evolution forward. In spite of Herring's claims to the contrary, I find little significant difference between Bergson's notion and the life forces posited by Bergson's vitalist contemporaries. Bergson published his work during late C19/ early C20 "eclipse of Darwinism", and his views on biology are of the same vintage and degree of relevance to today's concerns as disagreements over home rule for Ireland, prohibition, or the dangers posed by bicycling to women's health.

As part of that reform, it should be enacted that those who have gained UK citizenship either by naturalization or by descent can be deprived of their citizenship only by a court, not by ministerial decision, and only after the presentation and examination of evidence that the citizenship was obtained under extraordinary circumstances of deliberate misrepresentation or as part of a criminal enterprise.

Citizenship should never be a privilege accorded subject to the whim of Telegraph readers.

Yet I still believe that at some point in the future, US voters will reject the cruelty, race hatred, xenophobia, corruption, greed, dishonesty, bigotry, and gloating delight in exploitation that Trump embodies.
