In my younger days as a furry, while I never hid the fact I was a diaperfur, I never allowed myself to bond with new friends over diapers. I had a mindset that people wanted to know -me-, and that the diaper stuff was just too obvious/shallow. This had the effect of diminishing a big part of myself.

While I am still very conscious of this, I no-longer underestimate the importance of the shared experience of being a crinklebutt/babyfur/furry in getting to know people. In many cases it is that shared experience that brought us together, and so talking about it is perfectly legitimate.

In retrospect I guess I bought into the "nobody wants a one-dimensional interaction" a bit too much - it didn't require erasure. In striving to be interesting and accessible, I lost sight of the fact that crinkly stuff is interesting and worth talking about, alongside everything else that I enjoy.

Navigating the fandom with this interest was a lot different back then, and I just took it to what was perhaps an unnecessary extreme.

Pawsome 2025 Journal

Going to Pawsome was, perhaps, the most last-minute decision I have made in respect of furry conventions. While online registration for the con took place back in April, the reason for me booking, and my general plans for October, had changed hugely. After Megaplex and BFC, and my bout of COVID, I ended up with very little time to plan ahead for another convention. Because of this confluence of circumstance, I came very close to not attending at all, but after a couple of friends persuaded me out of my indecision, and reminding myself that one of my aims for the year was to foster and grow my engagement with the UK community, I decided to head out to see this new con which I had heard so much good about from its first year. It was to be my second UK con after Confuzzled, and while it continued my trend of one-day visits to local conventions, I had a really fun time and got plenty out of it – and gave me plenty to compare against the UK’s biggest fur con.

I arrived shortly before registration opened on Saturday morning. Ric had kindly offered to let me base myself in their room for the day, and so after hauling my backpack and my Pelican case upstairs, I headed back down to reg and got my badge. What struck me immediately was how small this con was: even compared to BFC Year 1, this felt very compact. The venue is a period hotel just outside Gloucester, and so it felt rural while being very accessible, and the size of the property must have meant there were probably no more than about 300 or so attendees. This meant that I very quickly ran into most of the furs I knew at the con, and I could tell that finding ways to be social was not going to be too difficult.

First up was the gunge panel, which was set up in the marquee outside. Unfortunately, after arriving a little in advance of the scheduled start time, and the panel hosts being in the process of setting up, the convention delayed the panel by half an hour – a trend that was happening fairly frequently across the events slate from what I could see. Nonetheless, eventually the panel got started, and it was framed from a really interesting perspective: things to know before engaging in your first ever gunge scene. There were lots of practical tips, from how to set up the space and materials to have on-hand before starting; ways to play with gunge and how is safe to do so; and how to clean up after a scene. I hadn’t appreciated just how much effort goes into cleanup, and I could see it taking a very long time without the correct preparation. Still, it was interesting, and something I can see myself trying in the future, perhaps stacked with some other kinks – diapers, of course.

I then headed over to the Dealers’ Den, which had a really good Bring and Buy sale which I wish I had scoped out more in advance. Lots of attendees had brought gear and clothes they no-longer wanted to sell on to interested buyers; as someone who is looking to shed some old leather garments at the moment, this would have been ideal! After browsing, I also took a look around the ‘professional’ Dealers area, which had a surprisingly varied and high-quality selection for a small con. While there were a few products of interest, I restrained myself from making any purchases, as I hadn’t budgeted for attending a con so spontaneously!

I then wandered for a bit in my partial, seeing quite a few friends in the hotel lounge, and spending a little time talking to Brock and Finch. Ric bought me a lemonade, and I had the opportunity to get some cowboy-themed photos at the backdrop area. Admittedly, my fursuit looks quite cute in a cowboy hat! I also got a moment to speak to Jev, a crinkly blue fox who I have seen around online for quite a few years; it was very nice to finally say hello to them. They were kind enough to invite me to an event that evening, but unfortunately it was beyond the time I was expecting to leave, and so I had to turn them down, which was disappointing.

While wandering around the general con space, I also noted the diversity of costumes being worn. Pawsome’s unique selling point is that it has a dress code closer to that of a US con than a European con. It was really nice to see plenty of furs with their pup hoods and onesies out and about during the day, and I also saw an inflatable suit, and plenty of petsuits as well. But, it was noticeable that there were also many people out in latex and other outfits that would normally be kept for evening hours in the US. I really enjoyed this aspect as there were some fabulous outfits on display which were great to appreciate, but I also didn’t feel underdressed without such an outfit with me either. My Babyfur-themed t-shirt and Lightning hoodie blended in perfectly well; had I been around for longer, I definitely would have enjoyed trying out more, potentially Little-themed, outfits. While I wouldn’t describe the con as NSFW, it did have much more open discussion of kink themes in a manner that I think was judicious and appropriate: acknowledging that sex and kink is a big part of the furry experience for many, while acknowledging that there are also plenty other ways to participate in the fandom as well.

I then headed upstairs to a room party I had been generously invited to by my friend Ryan and his partner Reivan. It was really chill and friendly, and I got to meet several new furs such as Disco, Joey, Kai, Luke, and also catch up with other crinkly furs I knew, including Kypari and Moss. It was NFC registration day, so a few people were pre-booking some hotels just in case they didn’t get a room in the lottery. Yet again I found myself reflecting that I would love to try NFC, but the time of year it falls into is perfect for me to make some city visits around the US, and so it’s a trade off that always falls towards the US. Who knows though – at some point that may change.

It was then time to do some fullsuiting, and thus my UK furry con debut! Brock had wanted some pictures with me in fullsuit for a while, and it ended up with us both, along with Ric and Crikey, heading outside to take some pictures around the grounds. We got some great shots, and I also got the opportunity to see Brock’s very lovely new car. Mike then found us and was generous enough to do some more photos with me outside in various different locations. It was really fun, and while I recognise that fursuiting seems to be a bit less performance-centric in the UK than in the US (attendees were much less proactive in interacting with me in character), I nonetheless got really wonderful compliments on my suit. I am always very proud to show it off, and I think the practice and development I did at both Megaplex and BFC really helped me perform so much more effectively than I have done as a suiter in the past. After each con I feel I am performing my character more and more effectively, and I feel I am moving on from being a novice suiter.

After an hour or so, I returned to the room to de-suit and change, getting my bags packed before joining Morgan, Ric, Crikey, and Mike for dinner. The food was so much better than I remember from Confuzzled; my chicken sandwich with fries was nice, and while for £26(!) it didn’t blow me away, it felt within the realms of acceptably-overpriced hotel food. It set me up well for the journey home though. Soon after, I gathered my bags, and in the process, showed off all the stickers I have gathered over the past year to those who had come back to the room – almost a furry-spotter’s guide! Finally, it was time to pack up my car and head home; the end of a very busy but very fun day.

Overall Thoughts

It’s difficult to make a good judgement on a convention from attending for a single day non-residential. However, I can absolutely say that I really enjoyed my time at Pawsome. Its key differentiators (and strengths) from Confuzzled is that things were more reasonably priced for the quality you get; the hotel and grounds around it are beautiful, and give the con a small and cosy atmosphere; it is really easy to see people; and the convention staff I saw were very friendly and clearly proud of the work they were doing. Small touches such as the photo backdrop in the lobby lounge were fun. While the event schedule was too light for my liking (but hey, I am a creature of the US con culture where it is almost non-stop), with the ever-shifting schedule making planning a little more difficult (and unfortunately lending a slightly less-professional impression), this is a very small, and very young convention where such flexibility can be more easily accommodated, especially for those attending the entire run. Of the two UK cons I have been to, this is definitely the stronger offering, and I hope the senior Pawsome staff continue to foster this convention to further success.
