My sister found some old fountain pens that belonged to my grandfather and passed them on to me. I've got a whole blog post worth of info about researching them and where my grandfather was when he was gifted them based on the engraved bases, but for now here's a picture of the first one, a Parker 51 desk pen from around 1960.

If anyone has tips or recommended resources on carefully cleaning vintage pens, I'd love to hear about it! The bladder is still squishy but I don't know if it'll hold ink or anything yet.

Thanks for reporting back on your experiment! I'm guessing that even with the case being sealed there's still enough air to dry out the pens. I wonder if adding humidity would help or just make things more yucky? And that's very interesting about the nib creep. Makes sense that those two companies would have very different mixtures though.

I finally got around to finding the converter that fits my Pelikan Twist so I could try some of the inkvent shimmer inks that have been giving me trouble in my other pens and it's like night and day, omg. I probably should give it a few days to see if it clogs but everything seems usable so far. I'm going to have so much fun with this.

Swatch time!

Diamine Writer's Blood was a present I wouldn't have chosen for myself. It's a bit darker than I prefer but it's a very pretty deep red and will see plenty of use.

Endless Alchemy Golden Sunburst I got as part of the Endless Phantom kickstarter and I legit bought it to be a fidget toy more than a usable ink: the bottle has a bump on the base so it can be spun around to watch the sparkles go. It is *great* for this. It's also a very pretty orange/gold ink but given how quickly the shimmer settles I'm guessing I'll enjoy it most if I use it in a dip pen for monthly layouts rather than trying to use it as a daily driver.

Apparently bookshop screwed up and sent me Kitemaster early and it's so good you should all buy it next week. I need to write a real review in a not spoiler warning post but there's wind magic and kite ships and safely lines and a race of people with monkey like climbing abilities and a great family culture and an evil queen and cloud serpents and dragons and grief and joy.

Also, I bought the kit for the Romi mystery this year so I got a preview clue. Always love working with this alpaca blend they've got but it's spendy so it's a treat.

And my group is getting re-orged and layoffs on the way right after I told my boss I was burning out on what she wanted me to do. So I'm glad I bought myself something nice and can lean into joy of books and making things right now. We'll see if they lay me off in a few weeks for not being a perfect drone. I'm so burned out that I'm almost hoping they do so I can take the summer off with my kid and not think about ai cloud security nonsense for a while.

So, my 15 year old kindle is getting increasingly glitchy the longer I refuse to connect it to the Internet, and I'm looking for a new ebook reader before it dies completely. Recommendations requested!

Needs:
- epaper with backlight for night reading (this is the only way I can read with a headache)
- load on epub files via usb
- can handle ao3 fanfics (the images in these are part of what's glitching out my old kindle)
- preferably fits in my skirt pocket (so, 7inch or so)
- does not *require* internet connection ever. Not even to set the clock. (Again, kindle glitch has made it so I can't tell what books are newly added because the time is glitchy and apparently the Internet is the only known fix.)
- works with Calibre for transferring books
- it would be nice if it worked with Libby for my library too, but I kind of expect libby to enshittify so I'm not going to worry too much about it.

I suspect the logical replacement is a kobo, but I'm worried corporate enshittification will leave me in the same state I'm in now. I'd definitely prefer a free software option so I won't have to worry as much about some corporate changes making my books annoying, but I'm not a purist so this is more about having a device that works before this one dies on me.

Ugh, Python got over 500 #GSoC applications this year and so many of them are absolutely trash, didn't follow any of the instructions. Most years about half of our applications are like this. But usually we have a lot fewer applicants and the submissions were blank files not plausible AI nonsense.

So I'm stuck reading hundreds of incredibly low quality nonsensical submissions today in hopes to take some workload off my other unpaid volunteer mentors. This is not the volunteer gig I signed up for 15 years ago when it was mostly working with new contributors and not their AI chatbots and I'm grumpy.

I was expecting it to be a bit more orange in person but I really like it and it might wind up in my red Metropolitan eventually because of the colour match. I'm perhaps a bit inordinately fond of red ink thanks to my history as an editor and teaching assistant. 😅

Today's new ink swatch: Pilot Iroshizuku - ama-iro

I got a fancy new Pilot Elite E95S for my birthday and wanted to get some Pilot inks to go with it. I love the sky blue colour of ama-iro.

I had a bit of trouble with it in the dip pen + iroful notebook because the combo was too damp (not pictured) but no problem on the Rhodia paper I use for swatch cards or the Clairfontaine notebook pictured.

(I don't anticipate problems in regular pens, sometimes the Sailor Dipton fude pen just grabs a big drop and the coated paper makes it worse.)

I have a Ritma with their omniflex and it is HEAVY. I knew that from reviews but oof, it's much more noticeable than I thought it would be. It's comically awkward to use posted because the balance is wrong, and even unposted it's very heavy.

That said, the magnet cap is so satisfying and the build quality is so nice that it's found a niche in my life as a desk fidget and todo list pen, but it definitely causes hand strain if I use it for longer journaling.

I got it on sale for around US $25 on fountain pen day and I'm happy with the purchase for that price but I don't know that it would have been worth full retail to me, let alone what you'd have to pay in .nz.

Ink swatching: KWZ all that glitters - Stardust Blue

They claim they've got a formula that keeps glitter in suspension longer and given that the jar looks like swamp water after I've shaken it there's definitely something going on! It definitely needed less re-shaking than my inkvent inks did.

It's a pretty blue-black colour. The shimmer is more like that in a metallic gel pen than in most of my other shimmer inks. Performed great in my dip pen but I'll need to get it in a regular one and into rotation to see how well it works for normal use.

Ink sample swatch from yesterday: Inkebana Cowslip

I picked this up because I wanted some yellow to draw stars that would go with this month's stickers and the only yellow ink I have is yellow-green. This is the perfect yellow with a hint of orange. It's even more legible than I expected in the dip pen. I was planning this just for decoration doodling in a fine nib, but I might try it in a bigger nib for writing too.

I'm *incredibly* bad at Mario Kart because it sometimes triggers motion sickness so I'm actually surprised he didn't beat me. But he's 7 and we've been working a lot on the idea that you get better at things with practice rather than yelling about it and quitting, so I couldn't resist the urge to needle him a little. 😅

Swatched a new ink sample today and realized I hadn't posted the one I did last week so you get two photos.

Today's ink: Colorverse Gyeongnyealbi-yeoldo - pretty light green-grey. I love this color and it was great on the rhodia and clairfontaine papers pictured. Not so great on the coated iroful paper with the dip pen: it pooled and took a long time to dry. I probably won't bother putting it into a pen until I switch notebooks, but I'm excited to use it probably later in the year.

Last week's ink: Octopus Sheening Mermaid. Tealish blue with pink when. This is kind of halfway between the Diamine Vibe and Cosmic Glow from inkvent, but it's less sheeny. Worked well on all fountain pen friendly papers I tried. My intention is that when I finish the cartridge in my blue koi Preppy that this will become a ludicrous todo list and calendar ink to encourage me to write things down just for the joy of fancy ink. This trick works pretty well for me!

#inkvent "Salted Caramel" -- a caramel colour with gold sparkles. Very pretty, and not bad sparkle distribution even in the longer samples. I got a few lines of really sparkly writing rather than just a few words. The ink looks a bit darker in the Iroful paper because of the way it dries. I think my favourite is how it looks on the Rhodia ivory paper. #FountainPens

#StickiiAdvent : cute square stickers with animals and icons that give an almost Hello Kitty vibe. I *love* this size of sticker for my Traveler's Notebook calendar so I'm excited to get these.

#KatrinklesCountdown right side/wrong side pair of functional stitch markers. These are very handy to have for knitting because a lot of patterns have a period at the start where it's really hard to tell which side is which. And I do most of my knitting while distracted.

#inkvent "Pine Needle" a chameleon green (the shimmer goes green to blue). I loved watching this one shimmer as it went on and dried. It's definitely a "most of the sparkle in the first 4 words" kind of ink in my longer writing samples but I like the base colour and watching it dry so much that I'll forgive it.

#StickiiAdvent book and... bear with weird eyes? Ghost bear? (Maybe I'm thinking of Cozy Grove.) It's cute but a little uncanny valley for some reason.

#inkvent : "cosmic glow" a ridiculously shiny dark blue to pink. It was absolutely absurd to write a whole journal entry in this on the Iroful paper. I'll probably try to use this in my January palette just because it's so much fun on this paper, but honestly it was good on the others too. The only problem is that the Iroful paper seems to have "fingerprints" where the ink doesn't stick as well, and these were pretty obvious in this ink. This is fairly close to Organics Studio Nitrogen which is the very first big bottle of ink I bought!

#inkvent I'm so glad potpourri was not a scented ink. 🤢 More interesting in the big swatches since it's got multiple colours going on. Usable but not the kind of ink I personally get excited about.

It's dreary out today *and* my husband was interviewing someone so I moved out of earshot to give some privacy. So you get desk lamp photos and I'm not gonna try for better light 😅

I probably just won't use this until I switch paper, since I liked it on the Rhodia journal just fine. #Inkvent: "Vibe" is pretty close to a dip-pen-only ink I have called Dark Cave. Lots of purple-pink sheen, blue base colour. Took forever for the heavier swatches to dry but seemed nice for writing on the Iroful paper with the dip pen. I'm a bit nervous about putting it in #fountainpens since my similar ink isn't fountain pen friendly. It's so shiny! Took photos with back and front lighting so you can see the two colours.

#inkvent : Winterberry. I really love this one, though I'll be curious to see if it has the same sparkle shedding problem. Definitely get more sparkle at the beginning of the dip with my swatch pen, but I like the colour a lot even when it's not so brilliant. I kind of wish it could go in my Metropolitan (it matches!) but after my last sparkle ink experience with that pen I'll probably try a different one

#KatrinklesCountdown : a yarn clip. Didn't take a good picture of the side but it's got a metal hair clip on the back. Hair clips are great for keeping yarn balls from turning into a mess in my bag, especially the mini ones, but I kind of destroy the plastic ones I have so this should be a nice upgrade.

Katrinkles: a small yarn bobbin. Handy!

Inkvent: Tundra. Apparently I didn't manage to fully clean my paintbrush so some of the swatches have extra pink. Kind of a shame: I liked it that way. It's nice as intended too but it's basically just grey. Was pleasant to write with for journaling. I've switched to the Iroful journal since I ran out of Rhodia pages and was worried it would take too long to dry, but it seems ok thus far!

Ink: Sleigh Ride is dark red/brown with bright green sheen. Way more green in real life than it looks in the photo. I like it short bursts but something about it in longer writing on Rhodia ivory paper was.. unsettling? Distracting? Yucky? It pools around the edge and the colours together don't look great. I think I'll give it a try on the Iroful paper (I'm almost done with my Rhodia!) because I think it'll be nicer there where the sheen is different.

Also I can't think the words Sleigh Ride without hearing the concert band arrangement in my head. 🎶

Stickii: very relaxing fluffy animals. I really love this one.

Katrinkles: another needle gauge stitch marker! I actually moved these off the necklace and have put them on the bracelet because it was getting too big to wear around. I love the idea, though: it's handy to be able to carry only the 2-3 sizes I need for a project instead of a whole gauge.

Apparently I forgot to take pictures of my swatches of Mint Twist. Will fix that later.

The Katrinkles thing is a row counter, which already provided entertainment for my kid while he was getting bored of adults at the neighbourhood party. I love it.

The stickers are so pretty. I love how the flowers are so vibrant, and the bunny fairy creatures are adorable.

I like the natrional park vibe of today's stickers. And glad to have the matching stitch marker to go with yesterday's (look up thread if you missed it). And they match the ink so I might try to use these together some month!

Today's ink is pink ish purple verging on purple (more blue visible on the Iroful paper). It was very damp in the big swatches and took forever to dry, and actually dripped out of my dip pen on my hand. (I'm using a Sailor with a little feed, but that's never happened before.)

I was worried it would feather but it seemed ok when I used it for journaling. Was fun to watch it go on pink and darken to purple. I ran out of ink before I ran out of thoughts and finished the journal entry with Pilot Yama Budo and they had a nice vibes match like Lullaby was a pastel friend.

Unsurprisingly, it's slow to dry. But I managed to get it all over my hands because I put a label on the bottle and put a blob of ink on it, it out was decidedly not dry when I went to shake the bottle later. First time I've had that problem!

So, anyone else see some weird colour changes in today's inkvent ink if you tried multiple paper types? Mine is a noticeably different colour on iroful paper and only that paper. (And the one a few days ago glowed under blacklight only on Rhodia ivory!)
